The Philadelphia Zoo is pretty small. Over the past couple of years, to help some of its residents stretch out a bit, the zoo has started installing what they call an "animal exploration trail system" - a network of corridors and tubes that critters can use to crawl, swing, and stroll between enclosures. Visitors, naturally, love it - they can watch monkeys strut and skitter above their heads. Zookeepers like it, too: it hits all the sweet spots of textbook animal enrichment, offering their charges room to roam, environmental variety, and personal choice.

At first glance, its hard to see why New York's Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History would hold the above letter in its collection. The yellowed paper holds a few lines of loops that look to have been lazily scribbled in pencil - the kind of thing you might doodle out of boredom when a call center operator places you on hold. The catalog entry lists its contents as "Mostly illegible scribbles."

My favorite line is "dehydration can kill you faster than starvation
I'm not going through the hassle of trying to get my money back. I agree with the previous review. I could have wrote this in 10 mins on the toilet copying and pasting info from the net. My favorite line is "dehydration can kill you faster than starvation, and it is not a pleasant way to go out." No kidding! Don't waste your money!

    Narrator: Sian Thomas
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-14-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Elisabeth Luard, one of the food world's most entertaining and evocative writers, has travelled extensively throughout her life, meeting fascinating people, observing different cultures and uncovering extraordinary ingredients in unusual places.
In this enchanting food memoir, she shares tales and dishes gathered from her global ramblings. With refreshing honesty and warmth, she recounts anecdotes of the many places she has visited: scouring for snails in Crete, sampling exotic spices in Ethiopia and tasting pampered oysters in Tasmania. She describes encounters with a cellarer in chief and a mushroom king and explains why stress is good news for fruit and vegetables and how to spot a truffle lurking under an oak tree.
Divided into four landscapes - rivers, islands, deserts and forests - Elisabeth's stories are coupled with more than 50 authentic recipes, each one a reflection of its unique place of origin, including Boston bean-pot, Hawaiian poke, Cretan bouboutie, mung-bean roti, roasted buttered coffee beans, Anzac biscuits and Sardinian lemon macaroons.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sacrilegious to say it but Elizabeth Luard even beats Elizabeth David. Exquisite writing and wonderful food, and funny too." (Prue Leith)
"Elisabeth Luard proves that no matter where you are, there is food to be gathered, or hunted, or found. Squirrel Pie is a beautifully written tribute to food that has all but vanished from our everyday lives." (Alice Waters)

Six good books in a row
Of course all his other books rock as well. But for self there is no competition. Like self help is a competition. I can say some stupid things. Thanks again Hugh
    Excellent
As with the previous books in the Wayfinding series, I loved this entry. HH is such an excellent writer, and the tone is comforting and conversational - the advice and knowledge he is sharing is like having lunch with a good friend. The views he expresses may not always be breakthroughs (as in something we haven't heard before) but the way it is stated made little light bulbs go on in my head like "aha, THATS what that means." These books have been life changing for me, honestly, as I have tried implementing some of HH advice into my day to day routines. I look forward to future entries... and when its complete I see myself reading them all again.
Thought-provoking and entertaining at the same time.
I totally binge read the first 6 books in this series (and I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for more)
Incredibly thought-provoking. Hugh has a fantastic way of distilling the information down to easy to understand concepts and consequences that make it easy to apply to my own situations.
(I will admit that sometimes I skip to the end to read his mariner tale first :)
This Series Just Keeps Getting Better
Another great addition in a series that just gets better and better and has covers featuring the author in sexier and sexier poses:) If you or someone you know suffers from depression, this book isn't a cure-all, but it's a great addition to your arsenal. As with the other books, there's lots of great practical advice and food for thought. I haven't suffered from real depression that last longer than an afternoon in years, but back when I did I put together a strategy similar to what Hugh Howey outlines here.
    Bullets for The Fight
Another great entry into the series. This time Hugh tackles depression, explaining his view on it as one that developed as a survival method, and how we can battle it whenever it rears its ugly head.

In this part, we discuss the most important concept in all of self-help, which is that our brains and bodies expect a much different world than the one in which they find themselves. This mismatch is the source of much confusion and unhappiness. Understanding what our bodies expect to find, and what they encounter instead, is the first step in resolving this inner turmoil.I also introduce the first sailboat I ever owned, and begin the tale of its maiden voyage from Baltimore to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most harrowing sailing trips of my life.

Great ideas from an excellent writer. Read all of them in one sitting. Not just entertaining but also enlightening.
    Four Stars
    Deep thoughts.
... i would s till have say that the series is great writing. For me the concepts are energizing and ...
The author manages to eloquently and peacefully address issues of human behavior in such a way that even if I profoundly disagreed with him I would still have to say that this series is great writing and a worthwhile read. Personally the concepts are energizing and enlightening and ......well actually the feeling is due to a chemical dump in my brain that occurs when I read something that I like and want to remember. That may sound cold to many but I have been at ease with that for some time and it does not diminish my outlook on my personal existence. To understand that habits, behaviors, and consequences that cause me confusion and pain are not the byproduct of some unseen force, or my supposed evil nature, or because I stepped on a crack in the sidewalk, but because evolution and modern society are out of sync and that I can understand what's going on and use that to my advantage is liberating to say the least. In only on 3and look forward to more.
    Highly Recommend
I am hoping that if you are considering reading this book that you have already read the first 3 :)
I truly love Hugh Howeys writing style. These books have had a profound effect on me and I can't wait for the next in the series. The insights that HH offers are pure logic - this is something I really appreciate and find I can relate to better than someone simply telling you what you should be doing or why what you have been doing is wrong. There is so much in this series that so many of us can relate to - it's very real world. HH has a gift of allowing his readers to look at something they may have been looking at their whole lives and see it at just the right angle to make a difference.
    Nice.
Interesting and entertaining. This installment is longer and more comprehensive than the previous ones. The information on the human brain and behavior is not new, but Hugh's writing style is far more engaging than academic articles on the same topics. I'm enjoying reading this series.

    Publisher's Summary:
In part five of this series, we take a step back from examples of the struggles we face and solutions for conquering those struggles and delve deeper into the two levels of thought that are often in conflict. We look at the consciousness and subconsciousness and how the two are in dialog with one another. More importantly, we examine how the consciousness likely formed, and how its adaptation may have been for a different purpose entirely. In the Wayfinder portion of the work, I conclude the delivery of my first sailboat from Baltimore to Charleston, a trip that very nearly ended in ruin.

    Good Stuff
Another great installment of Hugh's Wayfinding series. In this installment he discusses how our brains developed. Subconscious coming first (or the lizard brain, if you will) and consciousness only coming later as a side effect of language and theory of mind (tools we needed to be able to communicate with others). It's great stuff, gets you thinking, and makes me feel like I'm not the only one out there who feels that my mind is at war with the primitive urges of my body.
I'm glad Hugh's taken the time to sit down and explain this concept of making peace with that inner war. If applied, the concepts in this series can be life changing. Thanks for giving back, Hugh.
    A lightweight metaphysical journey
Not exactly ground breaking in its content. Easy and interesting to read, but pretty insubstantial.
    Been Looking Forward to This!
I don't want to be Hugh Howey (I get seasick in an hour, so living on a boat would not suit me) or even to be exactly like him. For better or worse, I'm me, Esteemed Reader, and you're you and Hugh's Hugh, so that's who's who:) But I learned early in life that one of the easiest ways to compensate for not being especially brilliant is to watch brilliant people, try and figure out what they're doing and why, then use that to improve what I'm doing. Why else do you think I've been collecting all these writer interviews over the years?
Fortunately for me, Hugh is currently publishing his Wayfinding series, which is literally his advice on how to live a better life. I've been hooked since the first volume and can't recommend these books strongly enough. Today is Middle Grade Ninja history as Hugh is about to become the first author I've ever asked an additional 7 questions, and it all came about because I was pestering him to please, please publish more Wayfinding with a quickness.
I left organized religion behind more than a decade ago, yet each Wayfinding installment feels like a Bible study devotional--but with like facts and science and common sense:) I can read them with my coffee and spend my morning pondering some weighty issues in ways I haven't seen them presented elsewhere and I don't have to take any of it on faith because Hugh isn't using information I can't easily verify (such as divine inspiration). It should be noted that Wayfinding is far more respectful toward religion and individual beliefs than I'm being--it's a bad habit of mine.
The topics of each volume vary and though it's clear to me an argument is being built, I'm not sure exactly where Hugh's going and I'd be happy if this series were to continue on for years.

    More to think about.
Things already known... different context. Good reminders. Honest self portrayal. Not a page Turner but still interesting and thoughtful. Thank yoy.
It Picks Back Up In Part III
In this chapter Hugh discusses how our brain works (and by doing so supports his statements in part 2 that we have much less free will than we would like to admit) and goes on to say how we can use the information we know about the brain to make whatever improvements in our life we're shooting for. It's a great chapter in the series, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here.
