Absolutely! This young lady figured out how to survive using her childhood camping lessons, and went on this adventure with a friend-so blindly. And she made it all work! Genius!

Her earlier book about the bucket. Look it up and listen. You won't be sorry.

Her zeal. Her attitude-all positive, even at her lowest moments.

I sure hope another adventure happens. I need the next story! I'm amazed at how this girl camped during her childhood, and took those life lessons with her on her trip and improvised wherever necessary.

A very entertaining story as always from Emma but volumes made it difficult to listen to at times. Sometimes unbearably blaring and virtually inaudible in places.

The book is consistently funny and Emma Kennedy is a great storyteller as she relates her adventures across America. Bad luck seems to follow her and her friend like a curse but even so they battle through with an unflagging joy and optimism that is actually inspiring.

What other book might you compare I Left My Tent in San Francisco to, and why?

I listened to this as a fan of Emma Kennedy rather than any real interest in travelogues. This is a great follow up to The Tent, The Bucket and Me which is the obvious thing to compare it to. Personally I prefer this one, though others might disagree (and do looking at other reviews. Each to their own). If she writes a third instalment then Ill buy that too.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Hard to narrow it down. She tells a series of funny and touching anecdotes. Her writing style can be poetic when its required but is generally clear and insightful. Her personality shines throughout, which is complemented well by having her narrate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I probably could have done given the chance.

Author writes about great places to eat

I like that you get 2in1 book set. First you can read all about the great places where you can go to eat, where to shop, what are the best beaches etc. And then there is also a little Spanish handbook, where you can learn basic Spanish. Practical and easy to use - nice combo.

The language book made it a lot easier for me to get to the places mentioned in the other book , so yes these go hand in hand. The language book is super easy to use as well. The tourist guide had loads of places where I was able to go and have a great time. Can't wait till the next trip!

Amazing Book For Spain Tourists

The book is one of it's own kind. It's perfectly written for the tourists and guides them properly. The language course for Spanish is also very easy to understand and learn. I recommend it to all those who are interested in touring Spain or learning Spanish. It is a must have for them.

Very useful and very interesting travel guide. This set is the key to Spain packed with basic Spanish. Reading and using this book before and during travelling to Spain. I don't have plans yet to travel to Spain, but I'm thinking maybe next year and this book definitely will be in use.

Superficial and unhelpful

This was well rated by others but I found it superficial. The language guide is not sufficiently geared to tourists and is not easy to use. There are much better guides available. Disappointing.

Deceptive Tiitle

Not a bad book but most of it was Spain in general. Only the last few chapters were about the Basque Country.

This book would probably be better in print as there are many things that you're going to need to use the information provided. there are lots of restaurant reviews with addresses and phone numbers as well as directions to places with Highway numbers that you'll only remember if you have an incredible memory. It's probable that many of the restaurants aren't even in business or their ratings have changed as the book was published in 2012.

Little info on Basque Country

This book was not what I as looking for. It as more of an overview of Spain with a little Basque Country detail toward the end.

Prior to taking my first extended trip to Japan, a friend recommended this book to prepare me for the "other" Japan. It was just the ticket. Having done the "samurai/temple/inn of serene happiness" tour years ago, I wanted to go in-depth this time. Chad Frisk did a superb job of introducing me to, and preparing me for, the "insiders" Japan. His observations were spot on. His insights were very useful. His off-the-cuff, self-deprecating, writing style was both endearing and entertaining. Even if you have no intention to visit Japan in person (or to try to learn the Japanese language), read this book and enjoy Chad's journey with him, He makes you feel that you are his companion.

Bill Bryson - someone's knocking at your door

I was immediately struck by Chad's whit, I consistently laughed out loud (I'm not ashamed to say I may have snorted a time or two). His self-deprecating humor is refreshing. His descriptions were artful without being overly flowery. His observations were thoughtful. I've never considered traveling to Japan, I'm a traveler, but visiting the Far East just never appealed to me. If I could have Chad's type of experiences, sign me up! I want to be uncomfortable, make and learn from mistakes and watch the sunrise while unexpectedly freezing on top of a mountain with friends. Throughout reading Direct Translation Impossible, I kept thinking it would make a great Indie film. I could visualize every scene. Seeing a new country through the eyes of a younger person is invigorating. Definitely a worthy read.

Great insight on traveling outside of the USA

I purchased this book because I have always been interested in the Japanese language and culture. My step-father is from Japan, and I also took 3 years in High School. Instantly I could relate to the author in the first chapter. Those awkward moments when you first start a language and have no idea what the hell is going on. This has been a pleasure to read, and the stories are hilarious and intriguing. If you have ever wondered what it was like to live over seas, leave your family and friends behind to go on an adventure that could possibly change your life, this book is a great start to live some of those experiences. It is well written, witty, honest, and down right a blast to read. I wish Chad Frisk success.

Captures the Spirit of a Time and Place Perfectly

Loved this book. A very thoughtful piece about the triumphs and trials of living abroad, the challenges of assimilation and the glory of small things. Lots of great 3rd party quotes to give context to the author's thoughts. Really captures the difficulty of coming of age in a foreign place.
