Don't waste your money, read internet blogs and Wikipedia instead

I purchased this book shortly after moving to the UK from the US, and it is quite useless for helping overcome culture shock. As mentioned in a prior review, it does provide a light overview of the demographics, historical timeline, customs, faux pas, sights to see, etc, but all this could easily be found with a quick internet search or just going to Wikipedia, or buying a travel book. It is definitely not written by someone who moved here and took rigorous notes of all the social nuances and issues one experiences when being immersed in a completely new culture. The author does mention some of these issues, such as customer service in the UK (I'm from the US, so you may feel different moving here from somewhere else), but he only does so by lightly touching on service at restaurants, claiming that "the English today do not like serving others," instead of going into real depth. What do you do? What is considered rude on both service and customer sides? Customer service is entirely different at least between the UK and US (and some parts of Asia, from my limited travel there), beyond just having to get adjusted to service at restaurants, and it will affect multiple aspects of your life abroad. This is one example of many in the book in which the author does not go into sufficient depth to help one cope with the differences and overcome frustrations. Knowing the history of the UK or old customs that no one follows anymore won't help you become "Culture Smart" enough to get through all the different so-called "little things" in everyday life that truly may lead to homesickness and even depression. Don't get me wrong, I love the UK, and I'm adjusting quite well (everyone who moves abroad is going to get a bit homesick and bummed), but just saying this book WILL NOT HELP YOU. Don't waste your money, google the expat blogs and read them instead.

Great Little Book to Put in the Back Pocket

I love this little book! It gives you the overall snapshot view of Britain. This book will help keep you from being an example of the Ugly, Ignorant American!

It must be said though that this book is very basic. It is not going to give you details about any of the sections. It provides a foundational understanding of the nation. If you do not have the time to dig into a deep study of Britain, this is where you start.

It includes demographics, historical timeline, customs, faux pas, sights to see, etc. However, it is not a tourist book.

Information repeated elsewhere

I had great expectations on reading this book after my trip to the Emirates, but found it too commonplace. The information that the author shares is either in Lonely Planet or can be found out by attending one of the cultural talks in Dubai itself.

Further, there are many "don'ts" that the author offers, and which are usually known after spending some time in Dubai. However, the most hidden aspect, which is every day life for a local, is lost.

I read the Lonely Planet guide and found it more interesting, while it has the extra information needed to make your trip.

Well worth the read

We purchased this book before our first visit to Dubai last month. It was a very interesting read and helped prepare us for the UAE culture. That said, Dubai has many more expats than native Emirates, so there were certainly many "flavors" of culture that we encountered. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend this as a good reference book prior to traveling to the UAE.

Outdated information

Overall, good book. Very educational. But it was published 10 years ago. I just completed my trip to Dubai and found some of the guidance to no longer be the case. As the world becomes more modern and the UAE a tourist hotspot, the customs and culture is rapidly changing to keep up. Would love to see an updated version of this released. You are better off reading Lonely Planet for more up to date information.

Not worth the buy.

Bought this for my trip to Dubai and Abu Dhabi this past September. As most Americans, my husband and I were a little leary and wanted to make sure we didn't offend anyone. We thought we'd be walking on eggs shells when it came to cultural differences. We could not have been more wrong. For the most part, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are just like any other big city in the U.S. You would probably offend a New Yorker quicker than an Emiratee. Both places are quite westernized and dress is not as big of a deal as you may think. Quite frankly, I was more covered than most of the women who were not in traditional Muslim/desert attire. All you need to know are two rules: Don't take pictures of people dressed in traditional attire, and don't go grabbing anyone. You'll be fine.

Great resource

I bought this book for my manager who was traveling to the UAE for the first time on business. Great resource for anyone who has not yet traveled to the country and needs to know about customs, traditions, interests/past times of the locals. Good for business travelers as well as those traveling for their personal reasons.

False advertising

Presented as 2 hours of laos tourist guide, 2/3 or more was actually about how to train for MMA in Thailand! Ridiculous!! The portion about laos was very cursory and chapters had no headings. Fortunately only cost $4 but still a total waste of money

This book was in fantastic shape and provided the information I needed during my trip to Laos. This guide book have colored pictures, information and details about places to stay, eat, or visit in a city. If you are planning to go to Laos, buy this travel book and you will be satisfied.

Highly informative

I've used this latest edition for planning and I am not only finding the thorough sight descriptions and restaurant and hotel reviews to be useful and highly informative, but also enjoyable and easy to listen. This book made my trip! I cannot tell you how helpful it was! Very helpful won't leave home without it.

Well explained

To be honest, Laos is not on my to go list, but after listening this book I am now interested to visit the country. This proves how well-explained and well-illustrated, this book is. Going to another country for the first time is quite scary at first, but listening this book makes me feel that I can explore Laos like a local. This will equip us with what to prepare, what to expect, where to stay, what to eat and how to enjoy our vacation the most. So all in all, this book is a great help.

Don't read while hungry! :)

Received 15 Best Restaurants in Portland by Doug Pitassi in the mail today. Really enjoyed reading through it, if I ever make it to Oregon I will definitely be checking them out (note to self don't read when your hungry you will be craving everything!) If you love trying new restaurants and are heading to Portland Oregon any time soon you should definitely consider checking out his book! Received this book free for my unbiased opinion.

Very Helpful

I found this book to be helpful to me in deciding what eateries in Portland I should choose from on my vacation. I like to travel and have in the past picked some places on a whim and found them to be quite dreadful which just ruins your whole trip. I find I could trust Mr. Pitassi's judgement since he does live in the Portland area and listed several different kinds of places to eat, anywhere from sushi to steak.

Advice on several destinations

This book reads far more like a friend's advice than a standard guidebook, including major and minor attractions and a few stories about the author's favorites.

Somebody traveling the Yorkshire coast would almost certainly find something of interest here. There's not really enough information to persuade somebody one way or another about visiting, though, or much information about logistics. Several good photos throughout, though the Kindle format doesn't show them to full advertising.

I really appreciate the honest opinions of a local

Mattison provides evidence for vortex myths I figured were bogus but didn't have the time to research and disprove for myself. Even though he's a skeptic, he's thoughtful and balanced in that he lists how to get to each "vortex" site with a local's precision. I feel like I have a more honest assessment of Sedona since this book was written by a local and will adjust my expectations accordingly, which will make for a better trip.
