    Editorial Reviews:
Travel Radio International commemorates African-American history month with a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn. International traveler Patricia Lawrence takes another of her engaging "audiojourneys" by exploring the exhibits with one of the museums regular guides. They discuss how the museum came to be located at the former Lorraine Motel - site of the 1968 assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - as well as key episodes in American history from the original importation into the colonies of Africans to be slaves through the civil rights movement and its legacy.

    Title: Long Way Down
    Author: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman
    Narrator: Mark Bonnar, Rupert Degas
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-07-07
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 20 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
After their fantastic trip round the world in 2004, fellow actors and bike fanatics Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman couldn't shake the travel bug. Inspired by their UNICEF visits to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth.
Joining up once more with producer/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian and the Long Way Round team, and with two new BMWs loaded up for the trip, their route took them from John O'Groats at the northernmost tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas on the southernmost tip of South Africa.
Riding though spectacular scenery, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced their hardest challenges yet. With their trademark humour and honesty, they tell their story: the drama, the dangers, and the sheer exhilaration of riding together again, though a continent filled with magic and wonder.

Had a bit too high expectations on this one
Expected this book to give more indepth view than tv-series but it ended up being quite lame. The narrator of Ewans part has much stronger scottish accent than Ewan. And for someone not familiar to listening scottish it is annoyingly difficult to follow.
    Don't Bother
What disappointed you about Long Way Down?
The foundation of the book is that Charley and Ewan wanted to go on another long trip with as little hassle as possible whilst earning as much from merchandise as possible. This book is one of the parts of that story, but it feels like an aside, rather than a book in itself.
If you have seen the series don't bother with the book; there is very very little more in them (both of the series)
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Is that thing diesel
What three words best describe Mark Bonnar and Rupert Degas s voice?
I'm not sure who is who, but I am afraid to say that the english bloke did a much better Ewan than the scot.
Missing the novelty of Long Way Around
This audiobook while done by the same voice actors as in the Long Way Round, doesn't quite capture the excitement and novelty of the first audiobook. It may very well be that the journey WAS completely different, but it definitely didn't seem to have the detail of experience of the first book.
A light boys book - but an annoying voice
Having watched the series I decided to listen to the book. The narrative is great and broadly follows the TV version but has some nice insights into the detail that would not do well on TV.
The thing that drives you mad are the heavilly accented voices. The narrators are split to represent Ewan and Charlie with some awful heavy hollywood scottish voice for Ewan. After a while it really gets on your nerves and spoils an otherwise enjoyable boys book
    Too short!
it managed to condense Africa into about 2 hours . having seen the long way down and long way round I feel both books are far too short however the content within is enjoyable

    Members Reviews:
    Inspiring and riveting
Just finished this book and loved it. My wife listened to it twice and told me I had to hear it. It's riveting as well as inspiring. Basically, it's about people helping rescue animals in horrible situations.
For those who can't bear to hear about animals being mistreated, the descriptions are not lengthy or too graphic. You get just enough information to understand what's happening and then it's back to the action. It's the same with any philosophical talk about obligations toward and mistreatment of nonhuman animals. This is kept to a minimum, just enough to understand why the people are doing what they're doing in each situation.
As for Tricia's one-star review below, she clearly didn't listen to the book. For instance, she says the animals are released to the wild to face an even worse life. Homes are lined up for all of the animals saved in this book. She also calls the groups extremist. As for that, you'll have to listen for yourself. Almost all cases described here involved people working in the labs who couldn't take the cruelty anymore and sought out people who could help them help the animals. There's so much kindness and thoughtfulness in the book that the only "extreme" behavior on display is that done by those experimenting on animals. For instance, there are the dogs whose ear drums are shattered and their bodies harmed as they are forced to replicate deep-diving situations. No progress is being made on treating the mild cases of the bends suffered by Navy men and women. No progress for 40 years. Yet the dogs keep being tortured because if they aren't, the lab doesn't get its federal funding renewed.
The production values are dated but very listenable.
    Moving, Educational, Suspensful, Necessary
In a world where imprisoning and torturing innocent beings is commonplace and apathetically accepted, it brings a sense of comfort knowing that organizations such as PETA, and ALF are trying every non-violent method possible of freeing these animals and bringing there suffering to the attention of as many people as they can.
This is a wonderful audiobook. It contains many examples of their work, vividly described. The adventures are true, and will suredly touch the hearts of everyone.
The sooner we realize that the 'things' we consume (from food, to clothing, to makeup, and on) carry with them suffering, pain, and torcher...

"Let's capture Michael Palin and make him bring us on his next voyage....The combination of his glee, his sensitivity, and a good headset is a fulfilling way to travel." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent, per usual
Excellent, as all his accounts are.
Palin shares his eccentric journey. 5 stars!
A very personal account of travel insights from an accomplished observer and "experiencer" of life. He is courageous and has the gusto to share, and paint it large. Bravo, Mr. Palin! I loved it. - Carolyn Cole, San Pablo California.
    AWESOME!
Michael Palin is well-known for his talented acting and as a talented comedian as one of the Monty Python gang. Well, he has another talent - as the author of his "travel" series with the BBC! The book is delightfully written, eloquent, and brings to life as though you were there! A talented man and a delightful "read"!
    Excellent
I have travelled to many of the countreis described by Michael Palin described in this book - and I'm a bit sad to not have discovered as much as he did. But this also makes this book a great read. Michael's English humour adds spice to the story, very intelligently told.
    Michael's World
Michael Palins epic journeys are as interesting and enjoyable to read as they are in the original BBC series.
Michael's warmth and friendliness is felt thoughout the book. He is always eager and present. Always trying to understand the everyday life of places he visits and people he meets.
Michael is the best narratoryou will find.
I really enjoyed this book. It is highly recommended.

Four Against the Arctic is the incredible story of the survival of the sailors on the tiny island, barren of all foliage and inhabited only by reindeer, foxes, and polar bears, before they were rescued by another ship six years later.
    Critic Reviews:
    "An extraordinary tale." (Publishers Weekly)
"An astonishing story, an almost unbelievable feat of survival." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Not about the four
I did listen to this to the end, but wouldn't recommend buying to any one interested in the story of the survival of the four Russians the book is supposed to about. The book is really about writing the book, or rather, the author's dismal attempts to research the event. What IS in the book could have been cut to about half its length and much improved thereby.
    one against the bureaucracy
An impressive tale of survival is fatally flawed by the author's approach. This is a tedious and repetitious recitation of the ardours of research. With a background in mountaineering, but no scholarship, he is badly prepared for the difficulties he faces. He hires a small army of researchers, translators and guides who actually do the bulk of the work. Throughout the narrative of his efforts to unearth this interesting story, he stultifies the reader by relentless focus on his own conquests. It is a shame that this remarkable account of desperate courage has been drowned in petty academic oneupmanship.
    Rock soup
This is a story of the problems and setbacks encountered by the author, when he researched this shipwreck. You can't help but admire the perseverance he displayed in his quest for this story, since he does a great job of putting ypu through a similar process, in reading it. Like the hobos' rock soup, most of what get out of this story, is water.
    Great story!
This is a fantastic story. In contrast with other reviews, I enjoyed hearing about the authors stuggles to gather the information about what actually happened all those years ago. But at the same time, I can understand how some might find these parts less interesting than the orginal adventure. I just thought it was a nice balance. My only complaint was that there were times some of the background got a bit too detailed. Still a great listen!

    Publisher's Summary:
It's been a while since we've heard from Joe Hughes and today you'll hear why. Shortly after he sent his last dispatch ("Patience"), Joe became very ill with HAPE or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema. It happened after he and his guide JJ has established the 3rd camp. They were making their way down to camp two, when Joe noticed he was having a harder, and harder time breathing. They pressed on, trying to make it down to the lower altitude of base camp. On the way, Joe passed out due to extreme oxygen deprivation. He was rushed to medical clinic base camp. You can read about how Dr. Luanne Freer saved Joe's life at www.basecampmd.com (see article, "Life Threatening HAPE" about Joe's rescue on 4/24/04). Eventually, Joe was strong enough to be taken to Khatmandu via helicopter. He spent five days in ICU in Khatmandu, before flying back to Newark last week. Joe is now recovering at home. In this dispatch, his last for a little while, Joe says a big thank you to all of his Audible listeners and his final song recommendation is Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds." He wants everyone to remember that climbing Everest is about following your dream, not all about reaching the summit.
Once Joe is feeling stronger, Audible hopes to record a follow up interview with Audible's founder and CEO, Don Katz. So, stay tuned!

There was an avalanche in the icefield, and there was just no way around it. So, Joe and his guide, JJ, played cards and listened to music (Mark Knofler and Robert Cray). Joe was very anxious to keep moving. Finally, when they got a good weather window, they scrambled from base camp (17,500ft) to camp one (19,500ft). And then, when Joe didn't think he could go any farther, his guide said they needed to keep going to camp two (22,700ft). Joe says he's tired and in pain, but proud. It's a lesson in patience and perseverance. Now, they are at camp two and Joe says he is ready to reach the summit. Stay tuned.
