    Publisher's Summary:
In a house teeming with life, young Maura, voted the Most Quiet Girl in Catholic school, notices everything but says little. Eager to penetrate the secret world of her father, FBI agent Joe Conlon, she is drawn to the bureau drawer where he places his badge at night. The time is the late 1960s, and Vietnam and the Cold War are fomenting unrest outside Maura's suburban Los Angeles home. Inside, the Conlons and their five children are still bound by tradition: baseball games, Sunday dinners of roast beef and mashed potatoes, and The FBI on TV. Under the watchful gaze of J. Edgar Hoover's picture, Maura's mother, a former New York bathing beauty, remains a housemaker even as she slips out for assertiveness training. And there's the one unshakable rule of all: Joe Conlon never talks about his job. In fact, he rarely speaks at all. Believing that he communicates in code, Maura is determined to crack it. She uses clues gleaned from Nancy Drew mysteries, eavesdrops on adult conversations, and spins larger-than-life fantasies in her head, with her younger brother, Joey, who has Down syndrome, at her side. But her flights of fancy turn sober with a murder in the family. Suddenly her father's silence speaks volumes, and she learns a lesson from him abut fierce love during a time of devastating loss. Bathed in luminous nostalgia, resonating with hilarious and painful memories, FBI Girl is the coming-of-age story of a highly imaginative girl and a passionate homage to family bonds, the trials that test them, and the triumphs that make them stronger.

Charming narrative of growing up and being loved.
What did you love best about FBI Girl?
Maura Conlon-McIvor's story of growing up in a Catholic, Irish-American family is personal and delightful. Her yearning to understand and be close to her reticent FBI agent father by creatively trying to crack his code by becoming an FBI girl-in-training is a fun read. Her parents love, their demonstrable loving support of her brother with Downs Syndrome and a devastating murder in the family make this a story of growing up and a shaping of her character and the person she is to become.
Maura's personal narration of her book adds to the books enjoyment and her ability to draw you into her story is outstanding.

    Title: Lights On, Rats Out
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Cree LeFavour
    Narrator: Cree LeFavour
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
As a young college graduate a year into treatment with a psychiatrist, Cree LeFavour began to organize her days around the cruel, compulsive logic of self-harm: With each newly lit cigarette, the world would drop away as her focus narrowed on the fierce, blooming release of pleasure-pain as the burning tip was applied to an unblemished patch of skin. Her body was a canvas of cruelty, each scar a mark of pride and shame.
In sharp and shocking language, Lights On, Rats Out brings us closely into these years. We see the world as Cree did - turned upside down, the richness of life muted and dulled, its pleasures perverted. The heady thrill of meeting with her psychiatrist, Dr. Adam N. Kohl - whose relationship with Cree is at once sustaining and paralyzing - comes to be the only bright spot in her days.
Lights On, Rats Out illuminates a fiercely bright and independent woman's charged attachment to a mental-health professional and the dangerous compulsion to keep him in her life at all costs.

    Good but distant
Beautiful writing. Very focused on the relationship with the therapist, which was interesting. There was a certain distance to it that I can't put my finger on. She would describe emotional motives in abstract ways. I like the book and it's worth the listen, but it lacked a certain depth that these types of memoirs typically have for me.

  • Les Berberes et Moi: A Story of Poverty and Suffering, Elation and Hope Audiobook by Magdelena Wasiura
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
Title: Les Berberes et Moi: A Story of Poverty and Suffering, Elation and Hope
    Author: Magdelena Wasiura
    Narrator: Deanna Delaney
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-12-17
    Publisher: Cv Publications
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Magdalena Wasiura returns to Morocco after a holiday to live and work with the Berber community, sharing their experiences, customs, and way of living.
    Contents:
Part One of Les Berbères et moi describes the author's first step into the life of her Moroccan family hosts, takes you to the souk and hammam, explains the importance of Fridays for Muslim society, sulks itself in whisky and the problems caused by it. In this part we are introduced to countless opportunists and amiable characters, and we visit a rather lavish circumcision party.
Part Two: The second part of Magdalena's journal records her life with the Berber community in Khénifra, in the Middle Atlas of Morocco - their homes, social gatherings, and her work with their children in the Association Hannan. Get a good wash in hammam, eat boucheyar, drink shiba, meet her friends Mohamed and Ali, and go with them to Arougou, wakha?
Part Three of Magdalena's journal describes broadly the "forbidden" subjects: intimacy and drinking in the context of Islam as supported by numerous tales from the Quran, and how young people will turn the prohibited into pleasure. She depicts the growing tension between herself and her Muslim family, and the cultural clash - something that one will not get in packaged holidays. "Lasciate ogne speranca, voi ch'intrate," it's Dante's invitation to Hell; here however, it invites one to hammam.
Part Four: What about the fatalism? Should women wear tight jeans? What about swimming? Our God or My God; whose then? Some of those issues are discussed in Part Four of Magdalena Wasiura's account of her stay in Morocco. She also describes a rather stressful Christmastime spent there, the overprotective nature of her Muslim family, and her trip to Meknès where she was arrested.
Part Five: Love and marriage.... Does it really go together like a horse and carriage? In Part Five of Magdalena Wasiura's journal, one will hear about marriage.

    Title: Scars and Stripes
Subtitle: The True Story of One Man's Courage Facing Death as a POW in Vietnam
    Author: Eugene Red McDaniel
    Narrator: Curtis Shelburne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-11-17
    Publisher: WND Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The word hero is used far too often. So is the word courage. In the case of Capt. Eugene McDaniel and his hellish experience during the Vietnam War, neither word accurately describes his struggle in enduring the horrors of being one of the most brutalized Prisoner of War (POW).
When his plane was shot down over the skies of Vietnam, McDaniel would be captured and spend six agonizing years as a POW in Hanoi Hilton. His captors used barbaric and sadistic torture techniques on him, but McDaniel remained a source of hope and strength for his fellow POWs by clinging to his faith in even the darkest of hours.
In this 35th anniversary edition of Scars and Stripes, a whole new generation of Americans will come to understand the power of prayer, belief, and devotion to God had in sustaining McDaniel during his six years as a POW in Vietnam.

A Story Not To Be Forgotten
For anyone who wants to know what it's like to be a prisoner of war, and yet somehow discover the beautify of life after the ordeal of a struggle, then you need to read this book. It's well crafted. Well told. You will be emotional connected to Red and his family and those who fought for our country -- specifically those men who were held captive under torturous conditions. Additionally, the ordeal for a spouse, for son, or for a daughter can be felt too as Red reveals that family struggle of wonderment. It is a great story of triumph that few books can match. Through this book we discover the power of perseverance and of faith -- how they are united together! It provides a message that transfers and applies to any of us -- no matter what the struggle -- there is always hope.
    From the audio book narrator
I quickly admit that I am in no way unbiased about this book. I was honored to get to do the audio book narration for "Scars & Stripes." "Honored" is not too strong a word. This story is exciting, amazing, enthralling, inspiring, and more. It's got action, adventure, turmoil, joy, pain, courage, faith, and inspiration, and much more to make it a page-turner. But I think if I had to choose one word, it would be "inspiring." As I was reading, I found myself inspired by the patriotism, the courage, and the faith of Captain Red McDaniel--and of his wife Dorothy--and, though my faith in God and fidelity as an American have not ever been tested as his, I found myself honored and proud to share this and much more with such a man. I think you'll find that this is one book you'll never forget. I'd be pleased if you like the narration, too. To have my name associated in any way with Red McDaniel's is an honor indeed.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-18-17
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The famed Internet personality - named one of Rolling Stone's Funniest People on Twitter and creator of the viral #notokay for women to share their stories of sexual assault - and best-selling author of Everything Is Perfect When You're a Liar turns her laser-like wit to anxiety, parenthood (or "the sheer insanity of being in charge of the safety and livelihood of three people besides myself"), popular culture, and more in this razor-sharp essay collection.
Like Chelsea Handler, David Sedaris, Dave Barry, and Patton Oswalt, Kelly Oxford - the Canadian native and Los Angeles transplant - has won legions of fans with her comedic skill, down-to-earth voice, and bull's-eye observations on the absurdity of modern life. For example:
"Congratulations America, I finally get a green card & now I may have to move back to Canada. Trump in the final two for President. Surreal."
"Dear Parents of pre-teen boys, Tell them they'll get ED by 18 if they watch Internet porn then buy them some porno mags. Thank You, Women"
"I'm not going to have a coffee this morning with the intent of blaming all my screw-ups on the missed coffee."
"1 good piece of news today: 7yo told me there is a secret war going on between muffins and cupcakes & I haven't stopped thinking about it."
Dishing about her kids, her move to America (and what she really thinks about life in LA), her marriage, and how she copes (or not) with anxiety and depression, When You Find out the World Is Against You is Kelly at her honest and most disarmingly funny best. Filled with biting, wise, and laugh-out-loud insights, this vastly entertaining collection of vignettes will make you think as much as it will make you laugh.

    Not my favorite
Every woman figure in the book speaks in that super annoying exaggerated Kim Cattrall voice.
The stories meander and visit several loosely connected threads before not really but kind of wrapping up.
And a toque is pronounced toook with a long ooooh in the middle not toke. If youre going to read a line telling Americans what Canadians call a knit cap, please pronounce it right!!

Living the life of her dreams won't be easy - especially since she was born male. But her dream life may yet come true - if she truly wants it. In this raw and emotionally charged memoir, Daliah Husu declares her trans womanhood with an honest and authoritative voice. Searching for her true identity, yearning for her mother's acceptance, and desperate to find love, Daliah shares her painful, yet enriching journey into self-actualization and womanhood - a journey that starts as a young boy growing up without his father or mother in the slums of Santo Domingo, and who later transforms into a young woman obsessed with the attention of men, forced into sex work, and haunted by alcohol and drug abuse. Remarkably, I Am Woman emphasizes that in midst of our loneliness, suffering, and darkness, our hopes and dreams continue to illuminate our path to personal freedom, survival, and ultimately love.
