    Publisher's Summary:
Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, a former student, lives in a tiny garret on the top floor of a run-down apartment building in St. Petersburg. He is sickly, dressed in rags, short on money, and talks to himself, but he is also handsome, proud, and intelligent. He is contemplating committing an awful crime, but the nature of the crime is not yet clear. He goes to the apartment of an old pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, to get money for a watch and to plan the crime. Afterward, he stops for a drink at a tavern, where he meets a man named Marmeladov, who, in a fit of drunkenness, has abandoned his job and proceeded on a five-day drinking binge, afraid to return home to his family. Marmeladov tells Raskolnikov about his sickly wife, Katerina Ivanovna, and his daughter, Sonya, who has been forced into prostitution to support the family. Raskolnikov walks with Marmeladov to Marmeladov's apartment, where he meets Katerina and sees firsthand the squalid conditions in which they live. The next day, Raskolnikov receives a letter from his mother informing him that his sister, Dunya, is engaged to a government official named Luzhin and that they are all moving to St. Petersburg. He goes to another tavern, where he overhears a student talking about how society would be better off if the old pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna were dead. Later, in the streets, Raskolnikov hears that the pawnbroker will be alone in her apartment the next evening. He sleeps fitfully and wakes up the next day, finds an ax, and fashions a fake item to pawn to distract the pawnbroker. That night, he goes to her apartment and kills her. While he is rummaging through her bedroom, looking for money, her sister walks in, and Raskolnikov kills her as well. He barely escapes from the apartment without being seen, then returns to his apartment and collapses on the sofa. Thus begins Crime and Punishment with all the twists and turns and philosophical questions that permeate Dostoyevsky's writing. A world classic!

    Great Book, but...
I loved this story, it's slow and methodical but I like that. Only minor problem I had is with audio editing. There were too many repeat phrases at times, and at times rough seams between the recorded takes, I guess. Just wish they would have taken the time to edit it better. But that's just a minor side note. I loved the narrator and the story. I'll miss it
    Must listen.
Very enjoyable. Could be hard to comprehend. but. if able to fallow the story . It will be very rewarding. story starts to fall together after very long introduction of the characters. primarily main characters. never the less. every character gets it's fill as a story progresses. and after 1/4 of the book. you will be drawn to this book. Intesipating next move of the characters and unfolding of the story. At the end of the book. Without spoiling the book. I was satisfied with the ending. Which is rare occasion for me...
    The reader is so horrid
Big fan of the book was looking forward to hearing it, but the reader is so terrible its really impossible to listen to it... audible has one narrator, the audio actually names a different narrator... but this guy makes you want to tune him out...
    Great Russian classic
I always loved this book and now enjoyed listening to it too.

  • Moll Flanders Audiobook by Daniel Defoe

    Title: Moll Flanders
    Author: Daniel Defoe
    Narrator: Virginia Leishman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-11
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 44 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Daniel Defoes novel is a delightful 18th century classic. Called the truest realism in English literature and the tale of a hot, earthy wench, it meets both expectations while also offering a remarkable portrayal of an ingenious mind. Moll is born in Newgate prison to a petty thief and is soon left at the mercy of whoever will take her in. From this unfavorable beginning, the lusty, resourceful Moll loves and bargains her way from rags to riches, from prostitution in the streets of London to prosperity on a Virginia plantation. Along the way, she offers a charmingly candid view of her life and times. His colorful characters like Robinson Crusoe earned Daniel Defoe instant popular acclaim. In Moll Flanders, he created a beautiful woman who still holds a unique place in British literature. Through Virginia Leishmans sparkling narration, she steps from the pages full of exuberance and spontaneity.
    Editorial Reviews:
Moll Flanders was, according to the long title of this work, "twelve year a Whore, five time a Wife (whereof once to her own brother), twelve year a Thief, eight year a transported Felon in Virginia," etc. Virginia Leishman's rendering of this novel is virtually flawless; it's well modulated, with no mispronunciations, stumbles or pauses. Still, it must be said that she seems overly controlled, too flat, more suitable for Jane Austen's well-appointed sitting rooms than for Moll Flanders' rumpled sheets. Earthiness, sensuality, high drama in the storytelling are needed to breathe excitement into an exciting narrative.
    Members Reviews:
Excellent Narration of Quite and Odd Book
The best part of this book is the historical perspective of just how bawdy and irreverent a book written in 1722 could be. The narration is particularly good, often rising to an excellent performance (not just a reading). To a listener with a modern perspective there is little sensational, exciting or even very amusing about Moll Flanders. I had an occasional chuckle or sigh and I learned some things, but not very often. I am sure when this was written it was much more exciting than it now seems. I liked Robinson Crusoe and A Journal of the Plague Year quite a bit better than Moll Flanders. This is very dated, but is not at all badly written, and is historically interesting.
A Classic that is timeless and almost poetry
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I love this book! It a rare account of women's trials in the late 17th century, but oddly those trials still exist today. Good versus evil is a theme throughout. This novel helps explain that evil has 2 categories; evil for neccesity and evil for evil's sake. It causes the reader to question if the first is really evil?
What was one of the most memorable moments of Moll Flanders?
Moll Flander's redemption and personal awareness of the choices that she's made while in Newgate.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I loved the scene when Moll helps one of her husbands escape. Her love of men despite their ill treatment of her is dumbfounding.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The way this book was written made me feel as though I was listening to music.

    Publisher's Summary:
Here are 16 tales from one of the great works of the Middle Ages. Ten young people have fled for a while the terrible effects of the Black Death in Florence and, in an idyllic setting, tell a series of brilliant stories, by turns humorous, bawdy, tragic, and provocative. This celebration of physical and sexual vitality is Boccaccios answer to the sublime other-worldliness of Dantes Divine Comedy.
A complete list of narrators includes Giovanni Boccaccio, Teresa Gallagher, James Goode, Polly Hayes, Jonathan Keeble, Siri O'Neal, Alison Pettit, Daniel Philpott, Nickie Rainsford and Stephen Thorne.
    Editorial Reviews:
This fourteenth-century Italian tome, which inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, remains one of the most enjoyable anthologies of short stories ever written. Nice capable British narrators represent the storytellers in Naxos's sampling of a graceful translation. Some young unmarried nobles, the "beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. The narrators capture the language and style with keen understanding. Well-chosen music adds to the atmosphere.

However, Juliens idealism and Napoleonic ambitions are always simmering just below the surface, threatening to erupt and jeopardize his designs. For how long will he be able to smother his true feelings? Bill Homewoods reading masterfully portrays the psychological tension and intrigue of this French classic.
    Editorial Reviews:
British actor Bill Homewood has a deep, sonorous voice and narrates with almost musical refinement. Stendhal's wonderful chronicle of the nineteenth century tells the story of his hypocritical protagonist, Julien Sorel. A poor youth and brilliant scholar, Julien begins a career in the church despite his liberal views and his disgust for his superiors. His pious front gives him access to aristocratic households as a tutor, but his ambition for social prestige leads him to scandal and ruin. Homewood is chameleon-like in his versatility with vocal characterizations, easily switching from the youthful Julien's timid, earnest voice to the condescending tone of Monsieur de Renal. Masterful in his narration, Homewood captures all the nuances in the tone and language of Stendhal's writing.
    Members Reviews:
    The Red and the Black
Julien is an ambitious young man thrown into society. He steadily gains success, but in the end he gets in his own way by committing an unthinkable act.
Any English major will enjoy this book. It encapsulates a time period beautifully and is darkly humorous. It is a bit slow at times, but Julien is an interesting enough character that even the longest psychological monologues are interesting.
Why is this version Identified as Annotated? Annotation would vastly improve apreciation.
Stendhal has written a sharp, dark satire of post revolutionary France. The humor is dark, trending into melodrama. So much of the content is based in the history of that moment that an annotated version is very much needed. Despite the presence of the word "Annotated" in the title, this edition is not annotated. The error does not appear to belong to Amazon
Having read Stendhal's The Charterhouse of ParmaThe Charterhouse of Parma (Penguin Classics), I find this book to be more of a pleasure to read. The translation may be more modern, but I was looking to avoid some of the older writing styles. Even so I would love to know if there was a better translation of whatever French word was returned as "Wiseacres".
One does not hear or read the word 'droll' very often. (Dictionary.com: amusing in an odd way; whimsically humorous; waggish.) Droll is down played, roguish rather than slapstick. The wink of a non-glinting eye. Definitely not a pie in the face. Directed to the mind, not the belly.

    Publisher's Summary:
Some of the classic collection of Lady Gregory's translations of the Irish stories of Finn McCool.
Lady Gregory's translation of these old Irish stories was described by the poet W. B. Yeats as "the best book that has come out of Ireland in my time." It contains translations by Lady Gregory of medieval manuscript versions of myths and legends drawn from a pre-historic oral tradition that still survives today. This adaptation for audio allows the listener to experience some of these stories through the spoken voice, as when they were first told by country people and in the courts of kings.
Reader Felicity Hays-McCoy is an Irish writer and actress whose knowledge and love of these stories goes back to her childhood, when she first heard them in the Irish language.
    Critic Reviews:
"Felicity Hays-McCoy's reading is brisk, matter-of-fact, business like. 'So now,' she says, 'here's how it happened...' I love it. You almost expect her to add 'and don't be tormenting me with questions.' We wouldn't, there's no need. Once you're there with the Fianna, fighting, feasting, chasing enchanted pigs, meeting princesses as dazzling as Niamh, you just listen and marvel. And want more." (Sue Arnold, the Guardian)
