Great for Language Comprehension Practice

I like to listen to books in other languages for language practice.

This works best if it is a book that I have already listened to/read in English,

as then the material is more familiar.

For new languages, I will often try to listen to a book in parallel:

say, 15 minutes of English, then 15 minutes of the other languages, etc.

As of yet, there is a fairly limited selection of foreign language audiobooks available in the U.S. store, and an even smaller selection that are available in both English and a variety of other languages.

(And, for some reason, the Spanish ones seem often to be abridged, which makes them much less useful for this type of "rosetta stone" parallel listening practice.)

But it is slowly getting better.

Congratulations to Audible for slowly increasing its foreign language material,

and here is hoping that it will continue to do so.

And perhaps some books in Mandarin and Arabic also?

Beautiful book for adults

Gorgeous paintings/illustrations but not a book for kids. It's a sad complicated story.

Good classic; totally misleading description

Great classic if you're looking for it (and you know what you're getting in tootherwise it may be monotonous). However, Audible's description mentions the author's commentary on the text as being particularly good, but none of it is even included. That's why I bought this! Disappointed. Plus, the narrator really sounds like he's readingnot as good as most of the audiobook readers I'm used to, but acceptable nevertheless.

A Classic

What a love poem!!

What made the experience of listening to Dante's Vita Nuova the most enjoyable?

Dante's verse is, as always, a joy to listen to. While it may be inaccessible in many cases, on the face of it alone, to have such passion with which to dedicate such a volume of work to one person is quite a thing in itself. So the shear magnitude of the writing process, the significance of what Dante went through to write this book, made it a compelling book.

What did you like best about this story?

There are many ways to see and feel love. Dante shows us how to 'live' love. These were, of course, different times, but everyone has experienced the emotional turbulence of trying to obtain the attention of the one you love, and therefore, one finds relevance in every poem.

What three words best describe Tim Lundeens performance?

Cold. Unenthusiastic. Effortless

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Love is life

This is clearly a classic book. Dante is obsessed with Beatrice and this is the published pining affection he holds for her. While that might not sound particularly appealing, remember that Dante is a master of verse and rhetoric. This captivating look into the process of desire may be much more than you bargained for.

The narration lacks the passion that is evident in the book. This is always going to be a difficult endeavor, but it sounds like Lundeen is simply reading the words, rather than being part of your journey.

Liam OFlaherty aka Liam Ó Flaithearta (1896-1984) was a significant Irish novelist and short story writer and a major figure in the Irish literary renaissance. OFlaherty was the son of Maidhc Ó Flaithearta and Maggie Ganley of Gort na gCapall.

In 1908, at the age of 12, he went to Rockwell College. This was followed by enrollments at Holy Cross and University College, Dublin. He did not attend the first two schools for long. He had intended joining the priesthood, but in 1917 he left school and joined the Irish Guards under the name Bill Ganly. He served on the Western Front, where he was injured, and it is possible that the shell shock he suffered may have been responsible for the mental illness that became apparent in 1933.

After the war OFlaherty left Ireland and moved to the United States, where he lived in Hollywood for a short time. The well-known director John Ford, a cousin, later turned Ó Flaitheartas novel The Informer into a film. Many of his works have the common theme of nature and Ireland. He was a distinguished short story writer, and some his best work in that genre was in Irish.
