A German Classic about how the Rich steal from the less rich, since Centuries!

A bit hard to read in old style German, but it augments the feeling of the time it plays in, so rather worth it.

Five Stars

Masterpiece !

Great story, difficult style

The story itself is great, but author's style (many indirect discourses, person uttering some part of a dialogue, sometimes indirect, constantly switching and so on) and old german words (some without clear descendants today, some with just another spelling) makes it a pain to read. I could avance no more than a page per day.

Publisher's Summary:

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes changed crime fiction forever and helped launch not just a popular character but an enduring legend who is just as loved today.

This audio book was narrated in London by experienced British stage actor Robert Maskell at a voice recording studio renowned for high production values.

The stories were originally featured not in a book at all, but were written as installments in a London magazine called The Strand.

Penned as always from the point of view of the ever-loyal Dr. Watson, these concise tales shed early light on Sherlock Holmes' analytical genius.

Throughout the 12 stories we see Holmes at his incisive and eccentric best. All groups within Victorian society feature, from European aristocrats to travelling Gypsies, mad doctors to innocent ladies. These are truly classic stories and a perfect introduction to the fascinating world of Sherlock Holmes.

The stories are presented in order that they were originally published:

Classic Stories With Superb Narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommend

Have you listened to any of Robert Maskells other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, Loved the boldness of the voice which met the uniqueness of the stories. Did a great job

Any additional comments?

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review

Thoroughly Enjoyable Version of these Classics

I really enjoyed these stories. I had not before read or heard them all and they were all first rate tales of Sherlock Holmes at his best. The Man with the Twisted Lip is the only one that I guessed right away. All the others took me well into the story to get a bead on the real culprit. My favorites were A Scandal in Bohemia because of the ending, The Adventure of the Red-Headed League and the Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb largely due to the impeccable narration, and the Adventure of the Beryl Coronet because of the outcome.

Robert Maskell really does an excellent rendition of these stories. His tone, speed, and cadence and the way he reads the exciting parts are really unsurpassed. And his voices are beyond compare. At times, I forgot only one person was narrating!

I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.

A most singular audiobook...

What did you love best about The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes?

There are several singular points about this audiobook and I would not have missed it for a good deal. 'The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle', 'The Man with the Twisted Lip' and 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' are, in particular, highly memorable pieces and among the better Sherlock Holmes stories I have read.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Why or why not?

Four of the twelve stories within this volume were later selected by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be among his favourite Sherlock Holmes stories.

Title: The Borgias

Subtitle: Celebrated Crimes, Book 1

Author: Alexandre Dumas

Narrator: Robert Bethune

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-04-14

Publisher: Freshwater Seas

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 7 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

To paraphrase the note from the translator, The Celebrated Crimes of Alexandre Dumas père was not written for children. The novelist has spared no language - has minced no words - to describe violent scenes of violent times. In this, the first of the series, Dumas tells the luridly sexy, amazingly violent, and strikingly amoral story of the three most famous members of the Borgia family - Pope Alexander VI, Lucrezia, and above all Cesare. Never one to allow a mere fact to stand in the way of a good story, Dumas puts all the most sensational accusations made against the Borgias - mostly by their enemies - to the fullest use, which certainly distorts history, but makes for a great tale. Also, he often takes the novelist's approach, giving us details of scenes for which there is no historical record - we are given, for example, a wonderful description of the look on Cesare Borgia's face as he breaks out of his Spanish prison, something not even Cesare himself could have seen, and he was alone at the time. Again, as the translator notes, "The careful, mature reader, for whom the books are intended, will recognize, and allow for, this fact." We're reading Dumas here, not Tuchman or Toynbee. Dumas gives us a sweeping tale of simony, betrayal, connivance, conquest both military and sexual, and above all death - on the battlefield in war, on the streets in brutal murder, in the dark by strangulation, at the table by poison. It is a tale of events and personalities that shook Europe and created the modern myth of the Renaissance prince, so well described by Machiavelli. Enjoy! Note: The modern listener will hear that certain passages in the book are marked by unmistakable anti-Semitism. As it is both useless to deny, and worthwhile to remember, that anti-Semitism was a cultural norm in Dumas' times, those passages have been left as written.

Members Reviews:

I can't endure any more

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The title is a far cry from the story I thought I would be listening to. All about Popes and characters the enter and leave the scene without any substance. Like listening to a conversation about someone else's acquaintances and being left without a clue about these people or even wishing to have a clue.

What was most disappointing about Alexandre Dumass story?

Subject according to title has not bearing on the story if there is a story.

What didnt you like about Robert Bethunes performance?

I would go nuts having to read this book to record. He did a fine job.

What character would you cut from The Borgias?

I would cut the stuff after the beginning to the end. The rest is fine.

Any additional comments?

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS TRIPE.

Titel: Der Stechlin

Autor:: Theodor Fontane

Erzähler: Gert Westphal

Format: Abridged

Spieldauer: 9 hrs and 27 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 03-25-14

Herausgeber: SWR Edition

Bewertung: 5 von 5 von 4 Stimmen

Kategorien: Classics, European Literature

Auteur: Gustave Flaubert

Narrateur: Alain Couchot

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 1 hr and 23 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 02-26-14

Éditeur: Audiolude

Evaluation: 5 sur 5 sur 5 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

A Simple Treasure

Go with Flaubert on his little journey, and boy, do you get a payoff! He turns his scientific lens on Felicite, an uneducated peasant woman, and slowly pulls us inside her thoughts and feelings. But what begins as a coolly objective study slowly turns into an act of love. Here is a woman who lives at the opposite extreme from the secular and scientific world of the author; she inhabits an almost primitive worlds of dreams and religious devotion. It might seem slow going as we follow the course of her life; no striking events are related. But let yourself walk with her through these brief pages and treat yourself to the magnificent conclusion. It's a good way to get ready for Madame Bovary.

Five Stars

Flaubert at his best.

Five Stars

Easy to comprehend. It had been awhile since I read Flaubert, and I like the author very much.

The "simple heart" of the book's subject is too simple ...

The "simple heart" of the book's subject is too simple, incapable of artifice, malice, or planning. One is led to believe that she is slightly retarded.

Title: Once a Jailbird

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: Hans Fallada

Narrator: Ray Chase

Format: Unabridged

Length: 17 hrs and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-14-14

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

For Willi Kufult, prison life means staying out of trouble, keeping his cell clean, snagging a precious piece of tobacco, and dreaming of the day of his release. Then he gets out.

As Willi tries to make a new life for himself in Hamburg, finding a job and even love, he still cannot escape his past. Gradually he becomes sucked into a world of drink, desperation, deceit, and, with one terrible act, he is ensnared in a noose of his own making.

Hans Fallada, whose famous works include Alone in Berlin and The Drinker, brilliantly crafts this dark and moving novel, originally written in 1934, as he describes a seedy criminal underworld of shabby lives and violent deeds, showing how our actions always catch up with us. His work is unparalleled, and Once a Jailbird is a fantastic title to add to Falladas recently translated works.

Worst. Narrator. Ever.

I got the audiobook as a Whisper synch deal with the KIndle book. The book itself is good, but the reader keeps dropping his voice to a whisper. Maybe he thought that's what Whisper synch means! I could not adjust the volume to hear all he said. In frustration I returned the audiobook. I will have to finish it on my Kindle.
