A bit hard to read in old style German, but it augments the feeling of the time it plays in, so rather worth it.

Masterpiece !

Great story, difficult style

The story itself is great, but author's style (many indirect discourses, person uttering some part of a dialogue, sometimes indirect, constantly switching and so on) and old german words (some without clear descendants today, some with just another spelling) makes it a pain to read. I could avance no more than a page per day.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Version of these Classics

I really enjoyed these stories. I had not before read or heard them all and they were all first rate tales of Sherlock Holmes at his best. The Man with the Twisted Lip is the only one that I guessed right away. All the others took me well into the story to get a bead on the real culprit. My favorites were A Scandal in Bohemia because of the ending, The Adventure of the Red-Headed League and the Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb largely due to the impeccable narration, and the Adventure of the Beryl Coronet because of the outcome.

Robert Maskell really does an excellent rendition of these stories. His tone, speed, and cadence and the way he reads the exciting parts are really unsurpassed. And his voices are beyond compare. At times, I forgot only one person was narrating!

A most singular audiobook...

What did you love best about The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes?

There are several singular points about this audiobook and I would not have missed it for a good deal. 'The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle', 'The Man with the Twisted Lip' and 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' are, in particular, highly memorable pieces and among the better Sherlock Holmes stories I have read.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Why or why not?

Four of the twelve stories within this volume were later selected by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be among his favourite Sherlock Holmes stories.

I can't endure any more

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The title is a far cry from the story I thought I would be listening to. All about Popes and characters the enter and leave the scene without any substance. Like listening to a conversation about someone else's acquaintances and being left without a clue about these people or even wishing to have a clue.

What was most disappointing about Alexandre Dumass story?

Subject according to title has not bearing on the story if there is a story.

What didnt you like about Robert Bethunes performance?

I would go nuts having to read this book to record. He did a fine job.

What character would you cut from The Borgias?

I would cut the stuff after the beginning to the end. The rest is fine.

In Berlin geht Woldemar im Hause des verwitweten Grafen Barby ein und aus. Dieser hat zwei Töchter: Melusine, über 30 Jahre alt, nach kurzer Ehe geschieden, gebildet und gewitzt und die stille Armgard. Woldemar ist sowohl vom Grafen, der seinem Vater ähnelt, als auch von den beiden Frauen fasziniert. Melusine hingegen interessiert sich für Dubslav und die Geheimnisse um den Stechlinsee. Sie lädt Woldemar zu einer Dampferfahrt zum "Eierhäuschen" auf der Spree ein, zusammen mit ihrem Vater, ihrer Schwester und einem weiteren adligen Ehepaar, das bei den Barbys verkehrt. Kurz darauf kommt es zu einer Versammlung in Stechlin, auf der Dubslav zum konservativen Kandidaten für eine Nachwahl zum Reichstag gekürt wird. A Simple Treasure

Go with Flaubert on his little journey, and boy, do you get a payoff! He turns his scientific lens on Felicite, an uneducated peasant woman, and slowly pulls us inside her thoughts and feelings. But what begins as a coolly objective study slowly turns into an act of love. Here is a woman who lives at the opposite extreme from the secular and scientific world of the author; she inhabits an almost primitive worlds of dreams and religious devotion. It might seem slow going as we follow the course of her life; no striking events are related. But let yourself walk with her through these brief pages and treat yourself to the magnificent conclusion. It's a good way to get ready for Madame Bovary.

Un cur simple

L'histoire de ce livre est somme toute assez simple, comme l'indique son titre finalement. L'intért de le lire se situe plutt au niveau de l'écriture. Faubert à une plume magique et son imagination est particulièrement féconde dans ses descriptions situationnelles.

Worst. Narrator. Ever.

I got the audiobook as a Whisper synch deal with the KIndle book. The book itself is good, but the reader keeps dropping his voice to a whisper. Maybe he thought that's what Whisper synch means! I could not adjust the volume to hear all he said. In frustration I returned the audiobook. I will have to finish it on my Kindle.
