Not Chaloner's Best

This is a continuation of the adventures of Thomas Chaloner who works for the Earl of Clarendon. The problem this time concerns the banking system at a time when the king needs money to fight a potential invasion from the Dutch. Bankruptcy has wiped out most of the bankers but suddenly one of them gets murdered. Chaloner is ordered to investigate. This leads him into the underground and criminal world of banking at this time.

To complicate matters the plague is sweeping the city and vigilantes are boarding up plague houses for 40 days to prevent its spread.

Chaloner must avoid the plague and the bankers who are out to murder him to solve this mystery. Like all Chaloner books it is well written and based on historical events. Most of the characters were real people which makes the book doubly enjoyable.

I really like Susanna Gregory as a writer. I do prefer her Matthew Bartholomew mysteries to the Thomas Chaloner, but this is probably because I prefer the middle ages in England to the Restoration period. But this is still an excellent book with an excellent narrator. If you like historical mysteries, you will enjoy this one.

struggled to finish. topic was interesting but with so much trivial detail it was hard to keep listening.

Great fun as usual mixed with historical accuracy

Susanna Gregory is an excellent writer with her main character giving an inside view of the absurdity of some of the lifestyles of the day, especially of the aristocracy! She manages to combine humour with historical accuracy in a way that is very rare and I have thoroughly enjoyed all her books.

Just needs music

Populated by a cast of clowns , the ineptitude of the main characters beggars belief , falling down , bumping into each other and sawing through bindings with pen nibs , it's no wonder that seventeenth century London was in such a state , if it were set to music you could put it on as a musical farce . The narrator did a masterful job by not bursting into laughter while he did his best to get through this fantasy

Most memorable of all of the series is the historical accuracy. One of my own distant ancestors turned up and the author had him down pat.

What did you love best about Forced Landing?

The reliving of the Doolittle raid.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Of course. With the in-flight abduction of an airliner, the theft of an aircraft carrier, and the mutiny and theft of an Iranian submarine all coming together at once how could you not be involved with the plot.

What about Thomas Blocks performance did you like?

Mr. Block wrote the book in the first place consequently you never have to wonder if the nuance of the narration is true to the intent of the author.

Any additional comments?

Of course the constant action in the story keeps you interested and makes the story a page turner. However, it is obvious that Mr. Block has done his homework over a vast range of expertise. History; the operation of B-25s off a carrier during WWII and flight deck testing of a C-130 during Vietnam. Nautical; sub operations down to the fact that a test firing of a tube would negate further firing if the correct steps weren't followed. Also the fact that this carrier had an elevator trunk instead of deck edge elevators like modern ships. And as always Mr Block's excellent understanding of aviation in general.

Engaging story, lots of thrills

The bad guys are really bad, the good guys have some flaws but overcome them to be heroes. This is an enjoyable thriller.

Exciting to listen to as the plot unfolds, coming to a spellbinding ending. Tom Block was masterful at writing and telling this one.

Great Book

What did you love best about Forced Landing?

This the third Tom Block book that i have purchased and was not disappointed. As a former airline pilot, he does an excellent job on accuracy of what planes are capable of. If you like good a good plot with a large cast of characters, you won't be disappointed. If you like this book you would enjoy other books featuring flying.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Forced Landing?

The only thing i would have liked was for the Captain to have punched out the attorney instead of being polite to him.

The multiple sub-plots and how they all come together. I love books where you don't know where the plot is going but you know somehow the pieces will come together. The author does a wonderful job of creating intrigue and then bringing it together so you can't stop listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's hard not to like the main character O'Brien though the "bad guy" is so bad that you have to enjoy the character for what he is. Hard to write too much here without giving away the plot.

Betrayal

This is the final installment in Markham of the Marines trilogy, set against the backdrop of revolutionary France in the 1790s. The historical novel is well written but the historical time line is a bit off in this book. I enjoyed the trilogy, Markham was a Royal Marine whereas, Bernard Cornwells Richard Sharpe was Army and the author kept pointing out the difference in roles, training and action between the two.

Lieutenant George Markham is still battling anti-Irish and anti-Catholic prejudices so prevalent in the 1700s. The action still takes place in Corsica and aboard ship. Still at loose is arch-villain Citizen Commissioner Fouguert. Markham meets Napoleon in this story. The book is full of hidden agendas, betrayals and schemes. There is ship to ship action and hand to hand combat to keep the readers attention. The ultimate betrayal is that of Captain George Germain the young captain of the H.M.S. Syilphide. Markham is stationed on the Syilphide as part of the Marine detachment. Germain unfairly denounces Markham to the Admiralty, leaving him where he began, seriously out of favor. Gerry OBrien narrated the book.

It is the third in a series and the crew of these misfits just keep getting more and more interesting on each adventure

Yes, the plot as most of Mr. Donachie's stories have more than a few twist and turns to keep the reader alert. Never in a straight line in these books

Have you listened to any of Gerry O'Briens other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to him in the first two of this series and I can find no fault in his performances, He is one of the true professionals who bring each character to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I must admit that the end with the Admiral was a very big surpise it made me want to call someone out to eat grass in the morning

Please continue the story we would enjoy the next adventure of this crew. Don't wait a year to write another PLEASE

Was really sorry to get to the end of this the third book. Just wished the story could carry on, did the author leave an open ending just in case or is that wishful thinking?

Fun listening

I like all L. Ron Hubbard's westerns and adventure stories.

Pulse Pounding Excitement!

Forbidden Gold has everything in it that an adventure story should have. Itâs main character, Kurt Reid, is a likeable and capable protagonist facing an interesting problem. His grandfather, whom Kurt did not have a positive relationship, has passed on but left a four million dollar carrot dangling in front of his grandsonâs nose. In order to inherit a fortune Kurt must locate a gold nugget the same size as the one his grandfather had found in the Yucatan jungle. Kurt, accepts the challenge but soon discovers a group of unscrupulous men are aware of his quest and intend on taking advantage of Kurt. Highly Entertaining

This is book number two in the Markham of the Marines series.

Connery (pseudonym for David Donachie) still has the story set in the first years of the French Revolution. Lieutenant George Markham is now on Corsica. The book opened with the Royal Marines making an amphibious landing on a beach under fire. After days of battle Markham and his men are sent off with a Royal Army Major to take a message to General Pasquale Paoli the leader of Corsica about treachery. The Corsican clan, known as the Bonapartist, is trying to assassinate Paoli. We meet in this book the famous women soldiers of the Corsican Army so silent and deadly with their knives. In this book we are introduced to a new character, Bellamy, an educated free Black man who is ordered by the Commander of the troop of Corsican women to carry the Corsica banner (A black Moor with white headband holding a banner) to lead the troops. Markham and troop flee and fight the French trying to get Paoli to Lord Nelsons Ship before the battle to make sure the Corsica Army fights with the English against the French.

The book is well written and moves at a fairly fast pace. There is no sea action; all action takes place on shore. The book has lots of suspense, back-stabbing, spies, and treachery as well as cavalry charges and infantry action along with some history of Corsica.

Gerry OBrien does a good job narrating the story.

I love Karen Maitland books and was so excited when this one was published as it seemed a long time coming. However, this book was disappointing and didn't have the "excitement" and surprise element of previous books. I did not sympathise with many of the characters and it appeared that the book was completed in a hurry. Was there a deadline?

I love Karen Maitland's books and have her full collection and would always give another of her novels another go.

Entertaining Medieval Tale of Good versus Evil

If youve listened to earlier books by this author youll know how she weaves a strong story into a backdrop of mysticism and creates a powerful atmosphere of medieval life. Set in the 12th C this book has rulers and employers mercilessly exploiting the hard-working poor as they try to scrap a living burdened by taxes and low wages. Corruption is everywhere and superstition haunts all walks of life. Death and witchcraft abounds in the central story as rich cloth merchant, Robert, is captivated by a widow newly arrived in Lincoln and his troubles begin. Dont expect subtle characterisation or nuanced morality: this is good old-fashioned good versus evil battling it out: simplistic but enjoyable nevertheless. I was intrigued by the references at the beginning of each chapter to superstitious beliefs of the period which seem preposterous to modern ears but held sway in medieval times.

Theres some pacey writing in this book, particularly the description of the rampage through London during the Peasants Revolt led by Wat Tyler

The narrator is outstandingly good.

The plots twist and thicken ... who will survive, who will die? Loved the ending.

Simply not Austen

Would you try another book from Regina Jeffers and/or Ruth Urquhart?

Not the author. Ever. The narration, however, was excellent.

Has The Disappearance of Georgiana Darcy turned you off from other books in this genre?

Partially. I will certainly be more careful.

Which scene was your favorite?

Early in the story it is enticing to see our favorite Austen characters and read about more of their life. But it quickly fell apart.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and frustration. Could not even finish it.

Any additional comments?

I had several problems with this book. The characters changed in ways I do not believe possible, Mr. Bennet took responsibility for his family's actions, Mrs. Bennet decided she did not like officers after all, they allowed their daughter to be exiled with a vicious, wife beating Wickham. And the repeated introductions of prayer, long pages on the importance of the clergy, quotes from the Bible and scripture and everyone praying for everyone all the time, all the prayers written out for the reader. Not awful if you like to read Christian Romances, but I do not and it was not mentioned in the description. And simply never present in Jane Austen's books. Repeated quoted passages from the Austen books did not help me believe this had anything to do with Austen. Plot was silly, convoluted and unrealistic. Trash.

After a disastrous detour to Tallahassee, Tee joins the Army and ends up in the West, at a remote Army outpost on the lip of the Black Hills. Here, he grows up and begins to accept responsibility for his life and for the lives of others. After six years, the past, in the form of two of the Klansmen, one now a U.S. Senator on a mission to sign a treaty with the Indians, confronts him.

He had buried his past deep, even changing his last name. Now, he has to confront it head on, starting with the two killers that entered his fort. Trained by the Army to kill, Tee emerges from his exile and takes revenge on those that committed the murder of his family, beginning with the two men. His purpose is now clear, he must take revenge, and he proceeds ruthlessly to do so. But revenge has its own cost, and Tee suffers that price. Many innocent people are killed, and he struggles with the guilt.

A Strange and Bitter Fruit is the story of revenge and its consequences. It is a story of violence and race, a true American story. The book raises serious questions: Is there a limit on revenge? Is there an act so horrible that any response, no matter how vicious, is just?

A Strange and Bitter Fruit, although it takes place in the 19th Century, confronts the listener with many of the issues of race and violence that we continue to live with today.

Absolutely one of the best books I have read!!!!

I couldn't put this book down from the time I picked it up to the time I finished it I haven't had a book grasp me like this in a long time this is a story that everybody needs to read and understand

amazing story on an important topic

GREAT story on a very important topic. the issues of slavery run deep! the authors epilogue said it best, as a country obsessed with terrorism we fail to acknowledge the terrorism visited on African Americans by whites during reconstruction.

A terrible time in our history.

I have read many books about slavery from many different authors. But I have to say that this story broke my heart. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost sight of the terrible abominations that were done to the black American people. I have to say though, I wish it would have ended on a happier note. I guess I like, "and they lived happily ever after. "
