Good Story, Energetically Told

What does Chris Andrew Ciulla bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Chris Andrew Ciulla brings life to these characters vividly and energetically. I enjoyed his performance, he has a fresh, youthful sound, which was just right for the main character, Dr. Parks. He does a fine job of distinguishing between the many characters and keeping their voices consistent, as well as making the female characters sound believable. He handles the 1890s idiom perfectly. After getting used to his rhythm I saw it all in my mind's eye--which is exactly what I want from an audiobook.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Saw 101: Snake Oil

Any additional comments?

The book was compelling and interesting. I was immersed in the story after the first few chapters, and I cared about what happened to the characters. I would have liked a little more sense of place, as I lived 30 years in the Pac NW, and I only got a little bit of description--but that's a matter of personal taste.

What made the experience of listening to Race for the Dying the most enjoyable?

Understated action and a brash young Doc moving into the 20th century - what's not to like? Am looking forward to next in series. This is my kind of book.

Poignant. Interesting. Historical.

What did you like best about this story?

The images in my mind of the town in the NW where it took place. Love stories like that. And the narrator really did a good job with the era and the location. Good vocal choices and variety.

What does Chris Andrew Ciulla bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The slew of characters that you would see in this story from the turn of the century really came to life. I would have had thoughts of their voices, but these were so much more vivid. I'm looking forward to the next one he narrates in this series!

Loved it and am buying the next in the series now!

Had this one in my library for a while and started listening the other day and for about 10 minutes, wasn't sure, but then...I was hooked. Clever and interesting and intriguing.

If you could sum up Roanoke Vanishing in three words, what would they be?

A Review of audiobook Roanoke Vanishing by Auburn Seal Narrated by Caprisha Page Auburn Seal has written a very interesting theory of the fate of the roughly 115 colonists who settled on Roanoke Island in 1587 only to disappear without a trace. Avery Lane, a student trying to write her thesis so that she can graduate, has chosen the story of the settlers as her topic. Unknown to her there were/are? people who did/do? not want the truth to be discovered and broadcast to the world. A group of these people made it nearly impossible and extremely dangerous for Avery to research her topic, endangering her friends in the process.Auburn Seal has written this story in alternating time between 1587 and the present in a chapter in the present and a chapter in history very effectively. You must listen to Caprisha Page's audiobook presentation of Auburn Seal's Roanoke Vanishing. It is an experience you want soon forget. Yes. It kept me wondering what could possibly hinder this girl's research next.

Caprisha, in her own special way of presenting a story, has managed to keep me interested in the story and amazed at her character representations. Caprisha is a unique storyteller. I look forward to hearing more of her narrations. Perhaps in this Vanishing Series of Auburn Seal's.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, if you have nine hours to spare and a nice comfortable chair.

What did you love best about Roanoke Vanishing?

I really liked the way that the historical facts were woven into a great fantasy.

What other book might you compare Roanoke Vanishing to and why?

I don't read a lot of historical fiction, but the bigger mystery felt a bit like A Great and Terrible Beauty.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

She does an excellent job overall. She reads too slow, however, once I sped up the narration it was fine. She does the voices of the ladies particularly well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, of course. Sadly I have children and a job pressing on my time.

What did you like most about The Hooded Hawke?

I really enjoy this series and can even put up with the American ' gotten' but in this particular story I thought that the clue sewn into the pillow was an error as in the UK the date is written day/month/year not month/day/year as in the US.

I'm a fan.

Well worth the listen. David O. Stewart knows his history, and more importantly, his storytelling. Historical fiction is perhaps the best way to empathize with historical figures, and with ordinary people who just happened to live in a different time. David O. Stewart does a great job of making you feel as if you were there.

Ok but not great

Interesting take on Lincoln's assassination. Interesting but not really noteworthy. I may try another by the author as I'm always interested in historical fiction.

Don't bother

Narration was just awful. Repeated several paragraphs in the story but changed for instance the $ amount of a gift or different scenario for same instance. Almost like the book was never poof read properly.

I don't know. I truly think both the author and the narrator could use more practice. They seem to be fighting each other!

So far, my favorite characters are the cat and the horse! Nun said.

If I finish the first book, I might attempt the second. I want to enjoy the story but the characters don't seem to be telling their own stories.

When the World Screamed was a story written about Professor Challenger by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was first published in Liberty magazine, 25 February 3 March 1928.

Professor Challenger, with the help of Mr Edward Malone and Mr Peerless Jones, drills into the earth until he reaches the mantle, convinced that it is a sentient being, akin to an echinus, and that by doing so he will be the first person to alert it to mankind's presence. He awakens the giant creature, which then proceeds to destroy his excavation, covering the spectators with a noxious liquid in the process.

This short story is a part of the "Challenger series", a collection of stories about the wealthy eccentric adventurer Professor Challenger.

Edward Malone, the narrator of The Lost World, the novel in which Challenger first appeared, described his first meeting with the character: His appearance made me gasp. I was prepared for something strange, but not for so overpowering a personality as this.

It was his size, which took one's breath away his size and his imposing presence.

His head was enormous, the largest I have ever seen upon a human being. I am sure that his top hat, had I ventured to don it, would have slipped over me entirely and rested on my shoulders. He had the face and beard, which I associate with an Assyrian bull; the former florid, the latter so black as almost to have a suspicion of blue, spade-shaped and rippling down over his chest.

The hair was peculiar, plastered down in front in a long, curving wisp over his massive forehead. The eyes were blue-grey under great black tufts, very clear, very critical, and very masterful. A huge spread of shoulders and a chest like a barrel were the other parts of him which appeared above the table, save for two enormous hands covered with long black hair. This and a bellowing, roaring, rumbling voice made up my first impression of the notorious Professor Challenger.

He was also a pretentious and self-righteous scientific jack-of-all-trades. Although considered by Malone's editor, Mr McArdle, to be "just a homicidal megalomaniac with a turn for science", his ingenuity could be counted upon to solve any problem or get out of any unsavoury situation, and be sure to offend and insult several other people in the process.

Challenger was, in many ways, rude, crude, and without social conscience or inhibition. Yet he was a man capable of great loyalty and his love of his wife was all encompassing.

Like Sherlock Holmes, Professor Challenger was based on a real person in this case, a professor of physiology named William Rutherford, who had lectured at the University of Edinburgh while Conan Doyle studied medicine there.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Since Malone has always been my favourite character in the Professor Challenger series, so he is in this audiobook as well. There are some secondary characters in this story who should also be noted, though. I liked "a wooden-faced butler" - he sounds so expressively "wooden" (if it is possible to say so)! The narrator Barnaby Edwards made a really good job. Another chap I liked thanks to the great performance - Jenkins.
