Summer Beach Read really different

This book is probably not for you if you like your books fast and erotic. I loved it. It is a long time mystery, with a little magic and the right characters to draw you in. I enjoyed the timing but it is not a flash. I am counting this as my summer beach read.

Cozy Mystery

When Beth Lamonte moves away from her old life and rents a house on the coast of Virginia, she encounters a bright firefly that will change her life. At first she thinks she's crazy, then she becomes curious and then her adventure begins. Beth finds herself being lead down the path of young girls life who disappeared from the house she is renting 20 years ago. As the story unfolds Beth starts to feel free from her old anchors and connects to parts of herself that make her whole and hopeful of her life ahead. A good cozy, mystery with interesting characters.

Intriguing plot

I purchased this audiobook and listened to it over a weekend. It's a compelling story of a girl who vanishes from a small town in Maine, a mystery with a touch of the supernatural. I enjoyed the locale and the warm characters.

This was a very easy read that kept your attention, but didn't make you be so involved that you had to keep going back over places to keep up with the story. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't a deep thought reader. If you want an enjoyable way to do some of those mundane chores like folding laundry.

A bit more action, a very drawn out story. I love 20+ hour books, glad this wasn't more than it was.

More action. I don't know it was just blah, I did not have any emotional reaction to any of the characters.

Would you be willing to try another one of Donna Postels performances?

Her voice was good. She has a pleasant rhythm, stops, starts, pauses at all the right spots. Hopefully she gets better material to read.

The title isnt misleading. Quarantine, cooly narrated in a smooth baritone by Kevin Stillwell, is a fast-paced, suspenseful listen that is indeed about a quarantine.

Set in a small harbor town in Massachusetts, in 1796, the tense action ensues when a trading ship drifts into port. Soon, the towns residents make the grisly discovery that almost all of the ships inhabitants are dead. And a mysterious and highly contagious disease is to blame.

It is up to local doctor Giles Wiggins to stop the deadly outbreak and keep an entire town from being destroyed. Yes, this includes a quarantine...but also some resourceful guile. A gripping listen.

Reader too slow and plodding

While the story content was interesting, the narrator's approach was too plodding. All the characters' "voices" were the same monotone. I even sped up the pace to 1.25x.

Neatly written bit of historic fiction

This is not a light topic and it's not by nature pleasant. But the characters are fun, and I believe the history to be viable. Not a great book, but certainly a good one.

Great Series

Would you listen to Shadow of the Alchemist again? Why?

Yes, there is so much depth you miss some of the customs of that era. The performance is outstanding also.

The end when he gets his sword.

Skip this audio book unless you enjoy listening to a performer with permanent hemmoroids. Why is he so irritable? Who cares!

I have no idea; the reader hurts my ears so much that I couldn't listen much past the second chapter.

Is Benjamin Black ok?

This latest installation reminded me of when a new author takes over an established ones work. Regurgitating the back story is half the novel. And the new parts introduced are flimsy and with little consequence. Wait for the next book and all you would have missed is what happened to Jimmy Minor.

Loose story telling

If you could sum up Holy Orders in three words, what would they be?

Rambling, sluggish, uninspired.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No. It's really a couple of character studies told inside not-quite-a mystery.

Which scene was your favorite?

Phoebe, Sally and David having tea. John Keating was brilliant in developing and distinguishing all three characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Rain, rain, go away.

I'd listen to anything John Keating reads. He is a gifted actor.

Listen to the story it's good

The story of two cowboys , Jud and Rufe, who are friends, come along in their travels and find a woman who is being bullied and in their efforts to set things right meet up with some real characters, corruption and then some solid characters. Their are format typos: to me is time and to make is tomake. But the audible reading is superb. The stories and characters are memorable. The little flaws are not worth missing this traditional, cowboy-code Western. And if you can't sit back and just enjoy a story because the author uses adverbs and adjectives generously in parts of the story-skip it. But you're missing a good, clean, but fun story. Totally enjoyed audible with immersion reading. Reminds me of past times enjoying GunSmoke or Sunday Western movie with my cousins and Grandparents.

No Paine, no entertainment

"Feud on the Mesa" is Lauran Paine's newest anthology from Dorchester/Leisure. Including "Feud", "Renegades Beat the War Drum", and "Texas Herds Bring Death", this collection oozes style and class.

"Renegades Beat the War Drums" and "Texas Herds" feature Caleb Doorn, shunned both by the whites and Indians as he wards off an Indian/White man war, and settles a dispute with his wits. "Feud" reads like a movie that just hasn't hit screens yet.

Looking for a little western adventure, look no further than "Feud on the Mesa".

Refreshing read,,

I am a long time fan of the West and it's true history. This was a nice read, though it was irritating that the phrases "to me", and "to make" were consistently written as "Tome" and "Tomake",, I also applaud the sparse use of profanity, and lack of explicit sex.

Enjoyable...But Wordy

I enjoyed this murder mystery set in the times of the ancient Greek Olympics. The story was detailed, and the details of the time period seemed well researched. I was impressed at the Narrator's ability to voice so many characters. There were several female characters, and many male voices, which at times made it hard to follow which character was speaking. But overall, I enjoyed the intrigue, as well as the dark humor.

A New Yoik accent trying to set the scene in Ancient Greece, the voice characterisation something akin to Rocky Balboa .

Maybe he should stick to what the yanks are good at, herpes , hot dogs and friendly fire .

Toby Peters mystery

Good, quick read

Toby Peters is one of those characters who interact with historical figures, in this case, Fred Astaire. They are good, quick reads and good stories.

Boring!

Way too dated for me and I'm 74 years old!

I am wading through a Lieberman novel by Kaminsky

which is a little more interesting.

audiobook is great, IF it's the one read by Tom Parker

I've enjoyed several of SK's Toby Peters' books on audio, but as I'm a great fan of Grover Gardner, I only got the ones narrated by him. I see on Audible that they've replaced his reading of Dancing in the Dark --which is utterly brilliant-- with one read by somebody else (who sounds mediocre at best in the sample). Travesty!! GG is such an excellent reader (even when he's reading under a pseudonym) that to replace his performance is an outrage; his readings are simply superb, & in this one, Fred Astaire sounds a heckuva lot like Fred A.

I suppose I shouldn't bother with many details about it, since it apparently is no longer available, but plot-wise, the book is also great fun. It offers an entertaining peek into the home front as it was during WWII, away from real war-involved activities & into daily life (though that was considerably affected by the war, of course --rationing, blackouts, etc). It seems especially useful these days, as the "Wars" in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, have violently affected only those who are actually involved; I put the word in quotes strictly because the general public hasn't been affected in the slightest by them, which I think is blasphemy & a travesty...it's just WRONG that...no, heading off on a soapbox not really germaine to the book. Let's just say it gives an idea how war can affect the general public, as it probably should. But it treads lightly or not at all on some of the most horrendous aspects of WWII on the West Coast, as is probably understandable for a light, entertaining book.

Kaminsky's characters are an entertaining crew of quirky folks, many of them REALLY quirky, though they don't cross the border into caricature. This is occasionally a problem in his books, as in a couple of people in "To Catch a Falling Clown;" Toby's friend Shelly, for example, is just over-the-top obnoxious in that one. But the quirks remain entertaining in this one.

But for the most part, the Toby Peters books are fun reads --not what you'd call Deathless Literature, but good, tasty brain candy.

No -- this is an adventure story -- not a particularly moving story. Consider it as a period piece novel written in a 19th century style and enjoy the fruit of the authors hard work

Not in love with this book!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Highly improbable and painfully boring! I could not get through to the end and gave up more than half way into the book. Mycroft Holmes as a spiritualist?! Human sacrifice?! Oh, and Masons - make a badly put together literary soup.

Enough said.

Predictable actions and trite prose.

No!

Holmes - but not as we know it Jim!

The story and narrator were OK but the whole lacked that certain 'something' the Sherlock originals had in spades. The character of Mycroft seemed to be pitched in the indeterminate area between real person and a Demi-Superhero! An enjoyable read but already forgetting the characters and details and not sure if I'll make the effort to renew acquaintance.

I can understand the temptation, Mycroft maybe an interesting character. Certainly from a marketing perspective, anything written about a member of the Holmes family will attract readers.

Follow-on and good enough to be a "page-turner"

Whether Britain actually had these tricky agreements and treaties is not to be known. But the characters that the author has invented do persist in your mind. If you are of the state of mind to go back 140 years, then by all means, read (listen to) this series.
