Publisher's Summary:
Acknowledged by Sherlock Holmes himself as the smarter brother, and gifted with even greater powers of observation than the famous consulting detective, Mycroft Holmes appears in only four stories in the Canon and remains an enigmatic figure wrapped in the mysteries of international politics and conspiracies.
Now, in Against the Brotherhood, we learn of Mycroft's secrets throught the eyes of his new secretary, Patterson Guthrie. Guthrie's upper-class education has not prepared him for the rough-and-tumble world of international politics, nor for his encounters with the beautiful and cunning Miss Gatspy, thief, spy, assassin - whatever the situation calls for. Mycroft is revealed to be a vigorous player at world politics and international skulduggery. Against the Brotherhood is full of attempted assassinations, secret spymasters, anarchist cabals, concealed identities, double- and triple-agents, burglary, and sabotage, all done in true Conan Doyle style.
Members Reviews:
Intriguing story
The plot was just twisted enough to keep me wanting more. How wonderful to listen to Mycroft and his machinations for the "government".
Feel like 1880
Would you listen to Against the Brotherhood again? Why?
No -- I would now go on to the remaining books in the series
Would you recommend Against the Brotherhood to your friends? Why or why not?
Only if they were interested in a series -- the book doesn't close out -- it leads to another and thence another
Which scene was your favorite?
Ms Gatsby infusion and ...
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No -- this is an adventure story -- not a particularly moving story. Consider it as a period piece novel written in a 19th century style and enjoy the fruit of the authors hard work
Not in love with this book!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Highly improbable and painfully boring! I could not get through to the end and gave up more than half way into the book. Mycroft Holmes as a spiritualist?! Human sacrifice?! Oh, and Masons - make a badly put together literary soup.
Enough said.
What was most disappointing about Quinn Fawcetts story?
Predictable actions and trite prose.
What about Alan Stanfords performance did you like?
Good reader, but very weak story.
Do you think Against the Brotherhood needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No!
Holmes - but not as we know it Jim!
The story and narrator were OK but the whole lacked that certain 'something' the Sherlock originals had in spades. The character of Mycroft seemed to be pitched in the indeterminate area between real person and a Demi-Superhero! An enjoyable read but already forgetting the characters and details and not sure if I'll make the effort to renew acquaintance.
Find another home for it
What disappointed you about Against the Brotherhood?
I can understand the temptation, Mycroft maybe an interesting character. Certainly from a marketing perspective, anything written about a member of the Holmes family will attract readers.
