If you're a big YA fan you'll like this
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I neither liked nor disliked this book, so saying if it was time well-spent or not is a little tricky for me. I don't feel like I wasted six hours of my life, so that's good, right? One thing about this book that I liked was that it's easy to listen to while doing other things. It's light "reading," so to speak, so even if you didn't like it you haven't spent all your energy trying to pay attention to it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Ok. So. I am not a fan of the YA writing style (first person, present tense. I HATE present tense in books), so I would have changed all of that. That's just my personal preference; I'm sure there's tons of people out there that wouldn't be bothered by it. It was also a bit cliche in places. I would have taken out the love triangle; it added nothing to the story (also, is it some sort of requirement now that all YA novels have to have a love triangle? It's getting old). In fact, I don't think the story would have suffered at all if the character of Jon was omitted entirely, because he did absolutely nothing but sit there and look pretty. At least Andrew actually helped with the murder investigation a little. It wasn't a bad book; it IS entertaining. It's no great piece of literature, but I have no doubt it could become very popular.
Have you listened to any of Brenna Fredericks other performances before? How does this one compare?
All I've heard are a couple samples from other books she has narrated, and she seems like a really good narrator. All her voices for the characters fit them perfectly, and she's really good at portraying the emotions in the characters' voices. I think she did an especially good job at Sharlene's voice; she brought something to the character that probably wouldn't have come across if I had read it myself.

    BTR Fame
I'm a big comic fan, so we bought this for our daughter's 9th birthday. The reading level was very much below her current level, which is all right it is a comic after all; that happens. The art work was not quite as good as I'd hoped. James was blond through most of it, and I felt on the cover was drawn very effeminate. I don't feel that he looks effeminate in real life. The only two who really look like a comic version of themselves were Kendall and Logan. I felt that Carlos was drawn a bit off too. Overall this book was entertaining and just something fun for my little one to read. I would not make the purchase again had I realized that it was more of a fun, breeze through the actors getting the parts and not entirely related to the characters of the show.
    Cheesy
My 11 year old LOVES BTR. Wanted this for a long time and i finally gave in (thought it was overpriced) I was right. Not much to look at and you can read it in 5 minutes. Little tidbits about the actors/singers, not the characters. Illustrations do not look like the actors and one major problem - James is not blond. Wouldn't buy again!

The year is 1906, and on the shores of Lake Michigan 12-year-old Violet Blake unearths an ancient talisman - a copper hand. Violet's touch warms the copper hand and it begins to reveal glimpses of another time. Violet is certain that the copper hand is magic - and if anyone is in need of its powers, it's Violet. Her mother and adored baby brother are gone, perhaps never to return. Her heartbroken father can't seem to sustain the failing farm on the outskirts of Pigeon Harbor, on the shores of Lake Michigan. Surely the magic of the copper hand can make things right for Violet and restore her fractured family. Violet makes a wish. But her ignorant carelessness unleashes formidable powers - and her attempts to control them jeopardizes not only herself, but the entire town of Pigeon Harbor.

    Delightful storytelling at its best
Highly recommend for all ages. Delightful characters focusing on a main character who invites in her world of loss, courage, magic and wonder. Vivid imagery and storytelling allow us listeners it readers to be taken on a journey.
    Surprisingly good story
I thought it might be a coming of age tale with fairies thrown in. It was, instead, a very insightful look at that place and time. Magic may be involved, or not. The narrator does a great job with the dialogs and voices. She really makes the story come to life.

    Publisher's Summary:
It's prom season at Smith High School and love is in the airfor some people.
Melanie Morris knows she shouldn't keep flirting with her best friend's brother, Dylan Wellesley, even though the last thing she feels is "sisterly" around the cute soon-to-be freshman. But attending prom with somebody else might mean losing him for good
Isobel Peters accepts the fact that she's a huge geek, but she never expected renowned player, Spencer King, would want to get his hands onher reputation. What begins as a bargain could turn into something real - or a Notable disaster!
Corey O'Neal is dating the boy of his dreams, rockstar Timothy Goff. But it isn't easy to trade in anonymity for instant celebrity status, especially now that swarms of protesters want them both banned from prom. Dating Prince Charming in real life is a whole lot harder than it sounds in fairytales.
Happily ever after? Try awkwardly ever after!

"Fans of Meg Cabot will find Marni's voice equally charming and endearing." (Julie Kagawa, New York Times bestselling author)

    Farewell, Smith High
Awkwardly Ever After has three stories centering around prom in Smith High.
In the first story, Awkwardly, Melanie Morris has a crush on Dylan Wellesley. Melanie, however has some issues at home making her feel that she is not worthy enough. I loved this story. It was sweet and very cute.
The second story, Ever, is about Isobel Peters. Isobel has a few weight issues and has been bullied for it. However, when the most popular student in the Junior class, Spencer King, hitches an idea that involves Isobel, you wonder. Will there be more than mutual friends that will link these two characters, or something greater? Isobel is very good at reading people, however, she's uptight. Meanwhile, Spencer is laid back and fun. This story was great! Love, Love, Love!
The last story, After, is about Corey O'Neal. Corey is an openly gay teenager in highschool. He gets bullied for it all the time. Corey is currently dating lead singer from the band ReadySet, Timothy Goff. What happens if the pressure of being in the spotlight is overwhleming? Can their relationship survive. Corey has had a hard time. However, he stood up for what he felt was right and that was the best redemption.
Overall, this series of Smith High (and Decked With Holly!) was great. The characters, the plots, the laughs...all amazing! I look forward to what Marni Bates has next.
    Was hoping for better
A disappointing finish to a series with some of the most delightful YA characters I've ever read. Marni Bates tries to cram in too much here by writing three short stories about three different couples. The second couple is the most interesting, but there's not enough time to fully develop them. And the third story--about the recurring gay couple in the series--is unconvincing and downright preachy. We get it--Bates loves the LGBQT community. Then, for heaven's sake, she should write them into a better story.
    Awkwardly Ever After
Awkwardly Ever After sounded like it was going to be an adorable finale to this cutely awkward series, but sadly, it wasn't. I liked how it was following the supportive characters, and giving three of them their happy endings, but none of the three stories actually impressed me.

Some kids would risk almost anything to be thin, popular, and stop others from teasing them.
But would you join the Midnight Diet Club?
Esme is a slightly overweight teen-age girl who is hounded endlessly by three sinister bullies. In her quest to find acceptance she almost loses her soul in this funny, slightly scary, twist on vampire legends.
    Members Reviews:
Skinny bully vamps are the worst!
Esme and her mom are on the outs with each other. She wants Esme to be thin and popular. But the recent divorce of her parents has Esme in emotional turmoil and so she turns to food. Her mom puts her on one crazy diet after another and nothing seems to work. The kids at school, with the exception of 2 friends, bully her all the time. The story opens with one scene after another of bullying in various forms and the tactless, yet well-meaning, things adults say to teens. Finally, there is an incident during PE class that sends Esme over the top; the three chic thin and cruel girls take advantage of this incident, pushing Esme even further. Pretty soon, we have vampires and a Dr. Ghoulash clashing with Esmes desire to be thin and popular.
This story starts off a bit slow with the bullying scenes, one after the other. But that also set up the scenery for the rest of the plot to walk in. Esme is pressured by everyone (except her two friends) to lose weight, and to do it quickly. At age 12, that is a lot of pressure. Throughout the beginning, we see Esme being pushed around, not making decisions on her own. But then a spark shows and she tails one of the thin, vampire girls (Pam) after dark one night, catching a glimpse of the secret the three guard. Using this secret as leverage, she forces her way into their circle and meets Dr. Ghoulash. Then she goes back to being pushed around and manipulated until the final scene of the book. Esme didnt strike me as particularly intelligent or heroic, but more of a lucky protagonist that got out of this scrape intact.
There was a lot of focus on her weight and, while that was definitely integral to her motives, after a while it felt like I (and Esme) was being hit over the head with it. Was there anything else to her character? She loves chocolate, is fat, her parents are divorced, shes overweight, she is good at geometry, needs to lose weightWhile it was a bit repetitive for me to listen to, I can also see that it showed the listener just how desperate Esme was to fit in; and to do that she had to lose weight.
This is one of those stories with a moral. As Esme hangs around the vampires more and more, she leaves her friends behind, even pushing them away, and starting to think harshly of them. I am sure you can guess how this book ends (in rough outlines) and Esme learns that true friendship is more important. I was hoping that Esmes mom would learn a lesson too, as she comes off as pretty shallow (but perhaps that will happen in a sequel).
The characters were pretty one dimensional with only Esme showing a little growth. The plot was predictable mostly because the characters were predictable. Also, and this is just my personal bit, the character name Dr. Ghoulash made me think of a dish my mom made frequently when we were growing up. So I automatically connected the big bad villain with a tasty meal. I guess everyone has to eat. But for me personally, that made the big Baddie more comical than dangerous or scary.

"A feel-good satisfying gem that will have teens smiling from cover to cover, and walking a little taller after reading" (Books for Keeps)
"I would highly recommend Geek Girl to anyone who likes a good laugh and enjoys a one-of-a-kind story." (Mia, Guardian Children's Books website)
    Members Reviews:
    Another hit!
Review: another hit from holly Smale, I love this series and couldn't wait to get my hands on this one, plus it was in beautiful hardback. Now that does mean that it doesn't match my other GG books but it is gorgeous and has some beautiful glasses on the actual cover itself, not that we judge books by their covers of course!
This story starts with a bang just like the others and the rest of the storyline carries on from there bringing mishaps and mayhem all the way through. There are some genuinely laugh out loud moments, as we can expect from this writer, but also some real aww moments and some times where Harriet gets herself in a fair amount of bother! The wonderful thing about this particular storyline is that it's all set around New York which makes for some fab NYC moments and a bit of romance on the Brooklyn Bridge too!
Harriet really excels in this latest novel. She is about to turn 16 and this really is a coming of age novel for her. She is still just as clueless when it comes to real life, despite her head for facts and figures but over the course of this novel we see her rebelling just a little bit more. I really liked her for this and it made for some excellent comedy moments! Nicks really comes into his own in the book too, he features a lot more heavily and is a bit of a grounding influence when it comes to Harriet. Of course Wilbur returns in this book, we love him and it wouldn't be the same without him and Harriet's parents also play a slightly bigger part this time. Because most of the novel is set in New York, we don't see as much of Harriet's friends from back home but they are ever present on the end of a phone, or in emails sent back and forth-lovely!
Overall this was just a really fun read. With a Geek Girl novel you know you are going to get some really funny moments, almost slapstick comedy but with a strong moral message and a strong feminist message as well. Harriet seems to be struggling with the feminist issue more in this novel, but it really comes through in the end. The book is well rounded, pacey and just a really good read.

    A wonderful glimps into a 13 year-old's heart
I just finished reading this lovely book! Itâs a wonderful story and very different from what I would normally read, but I enjoyed it thoroughly! It gave me an opportunity to see the world through not only female eyes, but a teen-aged girlâs eyes and heart, and the special relationship and impact that separated generations can share.
I loved how the author made the 13 year-old lead character, Claire, so strong, rational, and focused, but also allowed her to open herself up to intuition and wonder. Itâs a great message for young girls today, that they can be both intelligent and love learning and science, but also can be expressive and open to their and otherâs feelings.
This story re-awoke my own memories - as I'm sure it may similarly do for many readers - of a summer I spent with my grandparents when I was 11, especially with my grandfather, and how special he made me feel. Your book brought back memories of the stories he shared with me about my family and his life - and life in general.
Thank you to the author for creating and sharing this story with the world.
Faeries , Family & Nature seen by an amazing teen...
This is such a great book, for so many reasons. Love of family, country, nature and all discovered by a teen who is artfully portrayed with her strengths & "flaws". The author has woven her fairy dust into my heart and I am so proud to call her my cousin! I will be recommending this book to all my friends regardless of their age. Deeply moving and heartfelt, I hope to be reading more books from this talented writer.
    A Modern Day Fairytale!
The Fairies of Turtle Creek is a well-written magical tale! Thirteen-year-old Claire is a smart girl wrapped up in logic and science and the proper order of natural things, but her keen interest in nature and art draws her to an enchanting creek where her artistic talent freely flows. It isn't until Grandma comes to live in Claire's home that the logic of things comes into question. Old and feeble, both in body and mind, it seems, Grandma divulges a secret to Claire--she believes in fairies! The bond that slowly forms between these two is magnificent! Jill K. Sayre has created a generational book sure to be loved by the smart young readers it has been written for while having the surprising ability to captivate its adult audience, too.
A perfect read for a family adventure!
Fairies of Turtle Creek is simply enchanting. I will admit that I started to read this story on my own because I had heard about this book and Jill Sayre the writer before the book was even in print. But I realized I was really leaving my daughter out in the cold of this excitement. Then it finally occurred to me how much better an adventure and a fantasy that this could be if we just share it together. She is ten now but it feels like just yesterday that we went on our fairy hunts and collected acorns for fairy hats and leaves for place mats.
