Respect For Those Who Live In Slums
More than anything else this book shows another way to look at those who live in the slums. That way is with respect as viable, productive human beings who can and want to contribute positively to society when given the opportunity do do and when their needs are met as they undergo the transition and growth process. A lot should be taken from this book and the numerous organizations, individuals and research studies which are mentioned in this book when it comes to redeveloping poor areas and revitalizing inner cities around the world.
    An average book
he book is good. It gives us a deep understanding of the poor section of society in Mumbai. But the book is not as good as the other books of Rashmi Bansal. The written content is less. Pictures take more space.
    Five Stars
Very interesting in providing a different view of what it means to live and work in a "slum".

  • The Unfair Trade Audiobook by Michael J. Casey

    Title: The Unfair Trade
Subtitle: How Our Broken Global Financial System Destroys the Middle Class
    Author: Michael J. Casey
    Narrator: Lloyd James
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-05-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
A wake-up call for middle class Americans who feel trapped in a post-crisis economic slump, The Unfair Trade is a riveting exposé of the vast global financial system whose flaws are the source of our economic malaise. Our livelihoods are now, more than ever, beholden to the workings of its imbalances and inequities. The trillions of dollars that make up the flow of international finance - money that is often steered away from the people who deserve it the most - have not just undermined the lives of working and middle class Americans. It is a world-wide phenomenon that is changing the culture of Argentina; destroying the factory system in Northern Mexico, enabling drug cartels to recruit thousands of young men into their gangs; that has taken down the economies of Iceland, Ireland, Spain, Greece, and possibly Italy; and is driving American companies such as a 60-year-old family owned manufacturer of printed circuit boards to shutter all but one of its factories.
Veteran journalist Michael J. Casey has traveled the world-from China to Iceland, Spain to Argentina, Indonesia to Australia, recounting extraordinary stories about ordinary people from one continent to another whose lives are inextricably linked. By tracing the flow of money and goods across the world, he illustrates how an American homeowner's life is shaped by the same economic and social policies that determine those of a low wage migrant worker on an assembly line in China. This combination of financial acumen, narrative-driven reporting, and compelling story-telling gives The Unfair Trade a unique human angle.
Casey shows that our economic problems are largely caused by political agendas that prevent the free market from encouraging fair competition and impeding the allocation of resources. Until governments work together to make this global system more efficient-until China removes incentives for its citizens to save excessively, for example, or the U.S. ends the de facto subsidies enjoyed by politically powerful banks - the global playing field will remain lopsided, job creation will lag, and our economies will be vulnerable to new crises.
    Critic Reviews:
"A compelling indictment of our global financial system." (Simon Johnson, coauthor of 13 Bankers)

    Nothing New!
Nothing new! Review of current trade distortions. Offers solutions that probably will not happen in light of the fact that it is 2014 and the book was written in 2011.
    Excellent
I'm on my second reading and hilighting of this book. I found it excellent and a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the dynamics of the global economy. It exlains how an undervalued yuan affects the various parts of the world economic system. The author explained how one issue can ripple throughout the global economy creating havoc in various sectors and countries. You never hear this stuff on the news! I really like this book!
    Three Stars
    Good but long
    Deficit of Democracy
It's a good thing China doesn't export terrorism as ruthlessly as they export their goods. Although, with the crushing advantage China holds over the US with our huge trade deficit, they could "export" their power in ways beyond our imagining.
Author Casey writes a powerful analysis of how America's trade imbalance is destroying the middle class. As an economics lesson, this book is outstanding.

    Publisher's Summary:
Economists and financial wizards William Sterling and Stephen Waite take an in-depth look at how America's baby boomers have transformed the nation's - and the world's - economy, and how that transformation must inevitably - and radically - alter its course as the boomers age. The authors show listeners that there are strategies they can use, both as private individuals and collectively as a nation, to stay ahead of the all-important demographics curve and prosper during the "age wave".
    Members Reviews:
    These guys "get it"
Stephen Waite and Bill Sterling paint a picture for us clearly showing that baby boomers are doing to financial assets what they did to the real estate market in the 70's and 80's. Never before has this been better and more thoroughly explained than in Boomernomics. The authors walk us through the future in this well written book proving demography is destiny.
Demographics alone would be a powerful force in the marketplace but we currently have technology and globalization on our side as well. The authors give us a well rounded thesis on why the market can go much higher than it is today and how government can help prolong this market climb by addressing the healthcare problem, the debt and social secutity issues.
Harry Dent's "The Roaring 2000's" was a good second step in tackling the subject of demographics (The Great Boom Ahead being the first) but Sterling and Waite take it to the next level. They've taken a complicated subject and made it easy to understand so that we all might profit over the next decade and beyond from their years of Wall Street experience and exhaustive research on the subject.
Everyone can benefit from reading this book, from students right through to retired persons. A copy should also be sent tho the most famous Baby Boomer of them all, the Boomer-In-Chief, President Bill Clinton
Gee, I wonder if the authors have any connection to Cato
Imagine that you are perusing one of Yahoo's stock message forums, say symbol SSI and some guy with the moniker "catofan" posts a message like this: "CATO is going through the roof, sell SSI short, it's a Ponzi scheme and pile into CATO before it's too late!" What sort of credence would you give such a poster? For me, I wish I had hit the "Next" button, but no, I was unfortunate enough to buy the book.
If you like regurgitated CATO Institute ideology, you'll love this book. Gems like: *Social Security is a Ponzi game; let's put all the SSI money in a safe place---like the stock market. *America has too many low paid workers; lets' do away with "destructive" minimum wages and give generous tax subsidies to employers that pay low wages instead.
All written in the style of: "See Dick. See Jane. See Dick and Jane put all their retirement money in the stock market.

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-09-12
    Publisher: Open Book Audio

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In this New York Times best seller, Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association, shows us how to return innovation to the center of America's economic policy.
America seems to be on a downward slide. Our government spends too much money; our economy creates too little; and we aren't preparing our children to compete in a global marketplace. Yet our politicians - Republican and Democrat alike - ust don't get it. While once-great cities fall into decay, Washington thrives, living off the hard work and tax dollars of the private sector. It's time for an American comeback - and it starts with innovation. Throughout its history, America's greatest innovators have been the drivers of our unsurpassed economic success. American innovation transformed a country of ragtag farmers into the epicenter of the world's technological progress. Innovation creates jobs, markets, and new industries where none existed before. Most importantly, innovation moves us forward as a nation, pushing us to succeed and strive for a better tomorrow. In short, innovation is the American Dream.

So much potential, such a disappointment
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The author has a background in technology. This book had so much potential to provide valuable lessons on innovation. Instead, the author never fails to take an opportunity to go on a political rant, giving occasional generic attacks against one party (
Would you ever listen to anything by Gary Shapiro again?
I would be reluctant to listen to Mr. Shapiro's future work, but would if I could be confident that it would not simply turn into another political rant.
What aspect of Jack Robertss performance would you have changed?
I think the narrator's reading was fine...
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes. If you ignore the political contradictions (he spends the first half of the book talking about how the government can't help innovation and is fundamentally harmful... then the latter parts of the book going over a bunch of things the government must do for us to be able to innovate) and political rants, then there are some interesting nuggets of information. They should just be the thrust of the book.
    Innovate our way to survival
The comeback lays out the belief that for the US economy to truly get out of the economic down turn we must embrace technology and break down the barriers that are impeding our ability to innovate. It discusses the US's history of innovation from Edison to Apple and then discusses the current legal and political environment that discourages innovation and new business creation in the US

Length: 9 hrs and 35 mins

    Release date: 10-25-11
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
How did the newspaper, music, and film industries go from raking in big bucks to scooping up digital dimes? Their customers were lured away by the free ride of technology. Now, business journalist Robert Levine shows how they can get back on track.
On the Internet, information wants to be free. This memorable phrase shaped the online business model, but it is now driving the media companies on whom the digital industry feeds out of business. Today, newspaper stocks have fallen to all-time lows as papers are pressured to give away content, music sales have fallen by more than half since file sharing became common, TV ratings are plummeting as viewership migrates online, and publishers face off against Amazon over the price of digital books.
In Free Ride, Robert Levine narrates an epic tale of value destruction that moves from the corridors of Congress, where the law was passed that legalized YouTube, to the dorm room of Shawn Fanning, the founder of Napster; from the bargain-pricing dramas involving iTunes and Kindle to Googles fateful decision to digitize first and ask questions later. Levine charts how the media industry lost control of its destiny and suggests innovative ways it can resist the pull of zero.
Fearless in its reporting and analysis, Free Ride is the business history of the decade and a much-needed call to action.
    Critic Reviews:
BrilliantA crash course in the existential problems facing the [media]. (Richard Morrison, The Times)
"The most convincing defense of the current predicament of the creative industries that I have read. (James Crabtree, Financial Times)
With penetrating analysis and insight, Levine, a former executive editor of Billboard magazine, dissects the current economic climate of the struggling American media companies caught in the powerful fiscal grip of the digital industry. This incisive book is a start at an informed dialogue. (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    misleading subtitle
This book provides a very well researched history of "how digital parasites are destroying the culture business" but has zero to say about "how the culture business can fight back".
After a long, detailed history of digital piracy and the many attempts to deal with it, from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to Larry Lessing telling creators to just suck it up and "adapt or die", then he wraps it all up in the final chapter with the usual platitudes - the internet is a wonderful economic engine, we need to balance the freedom of information with the need to protect intellectual property ...blah, blah, blah. Gee, thanks for re-stating the obvious. Very disappointing.
    Intersection of Business and Culture
Great book for lovers of either business or contemporary culture books. This book is as much about the evolution of the internet as it is about media in the digital age. I think Mr. Levine's point about internet business models being built on "free content" that in reality is not free is right to the point. The culturee seems to be changing as businesses have discoved that free content is not self sustaining by the advertising model. Will customer attitudes toward "free content" evolve as well?
It is a really easy listen and keeps moving without getting bogged down in legislation and bureaucracy. Good narration.

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-20-11
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Looking at how Britain pays its way in the world today. Like Andrew Marrs History of Modern Britain or Michael Palins Himalaya, the book will have a coherence and life beyond the television series, mirroring its basic structure, but looking at some issues in greater depth, and telling additional stories to illustrate some of the ideas. This book is about the things that Britain produces in order to pay its way in the world, from physical goods that we can see and feel, to intangible services that are much harder to quantify.
We dont have to be prejudiced in favour of certain types of value: we shouldnt assume finance is modern and manufacturing out of date, for example. What matters is what sells and for how much. From manufacturing to technology, design and the services industries, this book will provide a cutting edge analysis - via entertaining stories - about what we make and why it matters.
    Members Reviews:
    Consuming 'Made in Britain'
Are you fascinated by how people manage to earn a living? Does an economy built on services, where none of us seems to do much of anything besides go to meetings and e-mail each other, completely confuse you? How is it that we manage to buy houses and cars and computers if we don't really make anything?
For answers to these questions, and more, the best place to visit is Britain. Why? Because England has gone further down the road of creating a services based economy than the U.S., Germany, Japan or other wealth countries. The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, the workshop of the world, is the poster child of the service economy of tomorrow.
I really liked Made in Britain. I'm hoping that Evan Davis franchises the book. A "Made in France" and a "Made in South Korea" and a "Made in the USA". The book grew out of Davis' BBC production of the same name. You can find the episode online, but apparently the BBC does not let North American's view their online video. (Can anyone help?)
The British economy is strong in areas of finance, pharmaceuticals, marketing / design, defense and higher education. Problems exist, such as persistent underinvestment in research and development, too little savings, and too much borrowing. Housing continues to absorb too many investment dollars. The finance sector is probably too large. The U.S. can learn much from Britain's economic strengths and weaknesses, and Made in Britain is a great place to start.
    The UK's Income Explained!
It is a question often asked in a conversation, and then everyone starts to moan that "we don't make anything anymore". The book blows this myth to smithereens by showing what we do make and how well our products are received globally; however it is balanced with what we don't make, and why we don't make those things any more.
The UK's economics and our societies' culture (and to a certain extent its psychology) are examined, indicating why we have a trade deficit and prefer offices to manufacturing.
I'm abbreviating heavily here. This book deserves much more of your time and attention. Evan Davis narrates himself, and I've always found programs or documentaries of his on TV engaging, entertaining and easy to understand.

    Subtitle: Money
    Author: iMinds

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-22-10
    Publisher: iMinds
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Learn about the Chinese market with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Chinas market offers unprecedented opportunities. It contains a population of over 1.3 billion in the worlds second largest and strongest growing economy. Through trade liberalization and the deregulation of its economy China has utilized its low cost labor advantage to dominate world trade in simple manufactured goods. With an average growth of 7-8% over the last decade China has been able to restructure its economy towards higher value added manufactured products. This has resulted in rapid increases in per-capita incomes. These increases may be illustrated by the increased share of electrical machinery, telecom, office machines and metals in Chinas export mix at the expense of apparel, textiles, footwear and toys.
While initially driven by export growth, the increase in per-capita incomes has resulted in Chinas domestic market becoming the major growth contributor for the first time in 2008. With currently almost 80% of urban households considered poor, this rising income is estimated to bring 300 million households into the middle class by 2025. Already considered the worlds factory, this rapidly emerging domestic market is expected to become the driver of world consumption. In order to supply its strong export sector and meet the demands of its domestic economy, China is becoming the key marketplace in the world economy.
Currently, Chinas global trade exceeds US$2.1 trillion each year; it imports US$922 billion and exports US$1.19 trillion. The strength of its export sector, particularly in manufacturing, which accounts for 80% of exports, is illustrated by the US$268 billion surplus it holds with the US.
    Editorial Reviews:
This overview of China's booming market is a useful introduction suitable for business travelers and others hoping to profit from the expanding economy. In clear if plainspoken tones, performer Emily Sophie Knapp discusses how China's market has changed in recent years, highlighting both the increasing demand for exports (particularly from the manufacturing sector) and the growing domestic appetite for middle-class goods. Listeners also learn about the various problems with China's economy, and government moves to increase investor confidence. Overall, a competent crash course, sprinkled with useful stats.

    Publisher's Summary:
During the first six years of this decade, the promise of quick profits coupled with risky decision-making led people from all walks of life to risk everything in the real estate investment market. Houses were flipped from investor to investor; it was a billion-dollar game of musical chairs. D. Sidney Potter ate, slept, and breathed real estate flipping from 2002-2007. Based in Pasadena, California, he was at ground zero when the real estate bomb exploded. From the mind-blowing profits to the collapse of a paper empire, Potter was a firsthand witness to the fallout of the real estate bubble. The Flip is an inside look at the actions and strategies behind the housing bubble and its aftermath. Potter explores well-tested strategies for success in real estate, as well as giving an in depth account of the risky behaviors that can lead to losing it all.

    Simply Pathetic
I had the misfortune of reading this book AND meeting D Sydney Potter personally. His book is just as bad as his attitude. I would not recommend this book at all, it's convoluted, amateurish and simply not good. The author does not focus on techniques that are effective in flipping real estate, he focuses on name dropping and fillers that detract from the purported theme of the text. The information that is discussed is firmly rooted in the irresponsible techniques that caused this current financial mess with housing. Furthermore, Potter has apparently gathered his friends to support his text as all of the reviews on the text (except this one) cover a six day span (Nov 30 - Dec 6, 2010). That right there is a true reflection of Potter's character and his lack of ability to allow the text to stand on it's own merit (which is none).
Not that I expect anyone else to notice this review other than Potter and his cohorts; I can say, save yourself the time and headache of trying to read this incoherent mess. I am sure that Potter will submit his rebuttal as his ego and temper won't let this one slide.
    An interesting, informative, how-to-flip book
The Flip: The True Life Story of How a Successful Tract Home Investor Went from Zero to Hero, Back to Zero by D. Sidney Potter is not your prototypical how-to book. Instead, it is an interesting, straightforward, step-by-step guide to flipping new tract homes and a memoir all in one.
This book focuses on buying lots and building homes in new developments. Mr. Potter guides the reader every step of the way, from the right phase to buy the lot in, the amount of money to put down, the loan one should acquire, and the time needed for the property to "marinate" before closing (or walking away).
Mr. Potter does a nice job of integrating his personal memoirs throughout the book, so that the emphasis remains on what to do and what to avoid when flipping new homes. The reader gets into a "technical" frame of mind so as to absorb all of the advice and instructions on how to flip. But then, interspersed amongst the instructions are parts of Mr. Potter's memoir, helping the reader understand who the author is and giving the reader an idea of the mindset that a real estate flipper has.

Previously, IPOs were limited to long established, large private firms. To fund this growth, a company can either seek private investment or list their company on the stock market. Another reason for a company to go public is to increase its liquidity. On May 18, 2012, Facebook "went public". They held an Initial Public Offering, or "I.P.O.", whereby the general public was invited to buy ownership shares in the company. The history of that day reads like a battle from a war: The entire business world watched as armchair generals predicted which way the winds would blow, technical glitches caused delays, and underwriters scrambled to hold the goals of the battle aloft. At the end of the day, there were proud victors and bleeding casualties. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, made over one billion dollars.

Learn about Gold Trading with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Gold trading is the investment in and trading of gold as a commodity. It is similar to trading in other commodities such as oil or wood, though there are factors that differentiate it. Gold has represented money and wealth for millennia in different forms. In the present day, we are able to freely own and trade gold in various forms, from gold bars to shares in gold mining companies.
