Learn about Monopoly Power with iMinds Money's insightful fast knowledge series. Monopoly power is the ability of the dominant participant in a market to control prices. It is a sign of market failure and a major factor in antitrust investigations. Capitalist economic markets rely on competition to operate efficiently and to protect consumer welfare. When a single company controls the prices within a market, the economic welfare of the consumer is often at stake. An ideal market in economics occurs when there is perfect competition. In this scenario, there are no or few barriers to market entry and the goods being sold are largely the same. There are also many buyers and sellers who share knowledge of the price, quality and availability of these goods. Under these conditions, all market participants would act in ways beneficial to the other. The market would function efficiently, promoting economic growth and ensuring consumer welfare.iMinds will hone your financial knowledge with its insightful series looking at topics related to Money, Investment and Finance.. whether an amateur or specialist in the field, iMinds targeted fast knowledge series will whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

I ordered this by mistake. On the older web site it was easier to confuse 8 minutes with 8 hours. This is 1 page essay that reads like an encyclopedia entry on the monopoly power. Fortunately I didnt waste a whole credit on it, just 69 cents

The vast changes to life brought about by the Industrial Revolution depended on oil as a power source. It is not unexpected then that many people find it difficult to admit the world is changing. Cheap energy may not be available indefinitely and this will prove damaging to world economies. There a two major concerns with oil consumption. First, there is its impact in the form of global warming and the need to find environmentally sustainable alternative energies. Secondly, there is the concern of cheap oil reaching a peak and eventually running out completely.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation defines Food Security as a state when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Economic, political and environmental factors affect food security from the national level to the individual. Food security is not only an issue for poverty stricken nations, but also for urbanised, developed nations. In 1996, world leaders met at the Rome World Food Summit to affirm a commitment to eradicating hunger and halving the amount of undernourished people by the year 2015. At that time there were roughly 800 million undernourished people worldwide. The current estimate from 2009 is 1.09 billion, though this amount is partly due to dramatic increases over the last 3 years because of rises in food prices and the Global Financial Crisis.iMinds will hone your financial knowledge with its insightful series looking at topics related to Money, Investment and Finance.. whether an amateur or specialist in the field, iMinds targeted fast knowledge series will whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

    Editorial Reviews:
It is estimated that over one billion people suffer from malnourishment due to lack of available food. This, obviously, is a major humanitarian and moral failing. It is also politically perilous and a drag on the health of world financial systems. "Food security", which the United Nations defines as "a state when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food..." has not been achieved. Is it possible? This audiobook, produced by iMinds and narrated by Emily Sophie Knapp, will address the issues surrounding world hunger and the steps being taken to alleviate the suffering.

  • Belching Out the Devil Audiobook by Mark Thomas

    Title: Belching Out the Devil
Subtitle: Global Adventures with Coca Cola
    Author: Mark Thomas
    Narrator: Victor Villar-Hauser
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-02-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Coca-Cola and its logo are everywhere. In our homes, our workplaces, and even our schools. It is a company that sponsors the Olympics, backs U.S. presidents, and even re-brands Santa Claus. A truly universal product, it has even been served in space.
From Istanbul to Mexico City, Mark Thomas travels the globe investigating the stories and people Coca-Cola's iconic advertising campaigns don't mention, such as child labourers in the sugar cane fields of El Salvador; Indian workers exposed to toxic chemicals; Colombian union leaders falsely accused of terrorism and jailed alongside the paramilitaries who want to kill them; and many more. Provocative, funny, and stirring, Belching Out the Devil investigates the truth behind one of the planet's biggest brands.
    Editorial Reviews:
The failure of many Western corporations to take responsibility for misdeeds carried out in their name around the world is a harsh fact of globalization and one that should shame us all. In Belching Out The Devil, Mark Thomas turns shame into anger in a comprehensive exposé of the shadier aspects of Coca-Colas global operations. Known to UK audiences as a stand-up comedian, here Thomson proves to be a skilled writer with a gift for giving voice to a diverse cast of witnesses, including Colombian trade unionists, Mexican shopkeepers, Turkish protestors, and New York legislators. Complicated matters of law and hair-raising descriptions of violence and child labor are presented with verve.
However, Thomas humor can be heavy-handed. An early visit to the Atlanta Coke Museum also known as The Happiness Factory establishes the distance between the companys public image and darker realities, but Thomas peppers his account with all the obvious jokes involving tourists, manic company guides, and cheesy slogans. For a comedian, Thomas frequent joking and comic asides dont always work; he should have more confidence in the ability of his capable writing to hold the listeners attention without laying on the schoolboy sarcasm. What could pass as righteous anger in a short stand-up set becomes tiresome in the course of 10 hours.
The choice of Victor Villar-Hauser as a narrator is also a mixed success. His thick estuary English brings a energetic boyishness to Thomas tirades, but he makes some strange choices in phrasing sentences are chopped up, he seems to lose breath in the course of long sentences, and he has a habit of pausing at odd places. (He looks like a typical upper-management man, and I meanthat in a pejorative sense.) Its as if Villar-Hauser is reading the book aloud for the very first time, unsure of the next sentence. This can be distracting, though his enthusiasm arguably carries the day.
    Critic Reviews:
"As journalism, Belching Out the Devil does for soda what Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation did for the hamburger." (The Washington Post)
    Members Reviews:
Worthy tale ruined by poor delivery
How Mark Thomas must regret not doing his own reading of his work here. As a piece of writing, Belching Out The Devil is a perfectly decent piece of travel/activism literature, but this audiobook sadly fails to capture any of the passion Thomas clearly has for his subject matter.
It could be argued that an attack on Coca-Cola is a rather obvious target.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 45 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Hewlett Packard is an American icon, the largest information-technology company in the world. The bedrock of Silicon Valley, it employs more than 300,000 people, its market capitalization is in excess of $100 billion, and its products are in almost every home in the country where there is a printer or computer.
In 1999 the company began a transition from the family management style of its founders. It made a bold statement by hiring as its new CEO the most visible female business executive in America: Carly Fiorina. In 2005, the board fired her, amid accusations of imperiousness that had begun to leak damagingly into the business media. The board at that time included one of Silicon Valley's most flamboyant venture capitalists and owner of the largest and most expensive yacht in the world, and a former CIA asset who believed he personally channeled the values of the company's founders. Each had a long and complicated history with HP, and each believed he should determine the company's future.
They ran up against a corporate governance expert whom they could not roll, and a new CEO whose loyalties on the board were entirely opaque. In this way, the stage was set for a rancorous feud that split the board into implacably distrusting factions. In the middle of the damaging schism, HP introduced the Big Lie. The lie was pinned on the chairman, who was receiving treatment for stage 4 ovarian cancer. And it sizzled through a largely unquestioning media.
Anthony Bianco gets to heart of the ethical morass at HP that ended up damning the entire board that created it. Almost every American has an interest in how the country's greatest corporations are run, and the character of the people entrusted with them. The story of Hewlett-Packard reflects power struggles that shape corporate America and is an alarming morality tale for our times.

    Reader/Announcer
This book is good if you like true business stories like I do. But I must comment on the reader/announcer. Several times throughout the reading he mispronounces words that, as a professional, he ought to know. One word was "forte" meaning strength. He pronounced it "fort". When I heard it the first time, I merely let it slip by, but when I heard it a second time, I had to roll the audio back and convince myself of what I had actually heard. If it was only that, I could let it pass, but there were several others. One major mispronounciation was the last name of former Defence Secretary Robert McNamara, which he pronounced "mic-MAN-era". Here again, I had to go back in order to be sure of what I was hearing.
To me this is inexcusable by not only this man, but by the producers as well as now I'm listening for the next mistake, rather than enjoying the book. Also, one is left wondering if he is pronouncing the names of the characters correctly. How can we tell?
Audible should bring this to the attention of the editors, to get this recording corrected.
    Very poor narration
I could not get past the narrator so I stopped listening after 30 minutes. He gives the book a very scholar tone which makes it tedious to listen to.
Good boardroom, but needs better reader
I needed a more enthusiastic reader. It was very insightful to be inside the boardroom. The beginning was more interesting than the middle and end.
    Just Okay

Shoptimism: Why the American Consumer Will Keep on Buying No Matter What
This book has some interesting insights but it is not told from the perspective of someone who really loves to shop therefore it's more analytical vs expressing the passion that many shoppers have and what they get out of shopping, both the good and the bad. I got a little bored with some of the chapters. It would probably be better if it was shortened down. I finished just being glad I actually got through the book since I paid for it but it did not leave a lasting impression on me.
Popcorn - can't stop reading but not a lot of nutritional value
I've been dipping into this book on my Kindle whenever I have a few minutes, with a few longer sessions including one where I went back and highlighted here and there to try to latch onto some ideas I might remember after I finish the book. I've enjoyed the experience, similar to my enjoyment of magazine articles on the plane or while waiting at the doctor's office, which I guess reflects the author's background as a magazine editor. It's interesting and entertaining and there are some little gems scattered around, like the comment that Target's extensive training program for its workers doesn't include a single bit of product knowledge. I don't like to quibble about the lack of substance; if it had more substance and less slickness I might very well have quit reading and moved on to something more fun. I'm a little over halfway through, maybe there's some insight waiting for me in the last chapters. (Like I said, I'm reading on the Kindle, so haven't flipped ahead.)

Imagine you spent two years researching a book about why we shop. Imagine you spoke to researchers, retailers, advertisers, consumers. Imagine you looked at shopping from both sides now â from buy and sell, from give and take. Welcome to Lee Eisenbergâs world.

    Title: A Pint of Plain
Subtitle: Tradition, Change and the Fate of the Irish Pub
    Author: Bill Barich
    Narrator: Daniel Noel
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-04-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Seamlessly blending history and reportage, Bill Barich offers a heartfelt homage to the traditional Irish pub, and to the central piece of Irish culture disappearing along with it. After meeting an Irishwoman in London and moving to Dublin, Bill Baricha found himself looking for a traditional Irish pub to be his local.
There are nearly 12,000 pubs in Ireland, so he appeared to have plenty of choices. He wanted a pub like the one in John Fords classic movie, "The Quiet Man", offering talk and drink with no distractions, but such pubs are now scare as publicans increasingly rely on flat-screen televisions, rock music, even Texas Hold 'Em to attract a dwindling clientele. For Barich, this signaled that something deeper was at playan erosion of the essence of Ireland, perhaps without the Irish even being aware.
A Pint of Plain is Barichs witty, deeply observant portrait of an Ireland vanishing before our eyes. Drawing on the wit and wisdom of Flann O'Brien, James Joyce, Brendan Behan, and J. M. Synge, Barich explores how Irish culture has become a commodity for exports for such firms as the Irish Pub Company, which has built some 500 authentic Irish pubs in 45 countries, where authenticity is in the eye of the beholder. The tale of Arthur Guinness and the famous brewery he founded in the mid-18th century reveals the astonishing fact that more stout is sold in Nigeria than in Ireland itself.
From the famed watering holes of Dublin to tiny village pubs, Barich introduces a colorful array of characters, and, ever pursuing craic, the ineffable Irish word for a good time, engages in an unvarnished yet affectionate discussion about what it means to be Irish today.
    Critic Reviews:
"Most browsers will pick this up because they want to read about Irish pubs, but they will get much, much more than they expected. An excellent, however sneaky, addition to the literature of globalization." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
Very annoying reading distracts from the book
I read "A Pint of Plain" before listening to the audio version. The book seems disjointed, and jumps back and forth in the author's description of Ireland's pub and drinking culture and history, but ultimately is an enjoyable and informative read. The audio version, however, seems much less successful due to the reading style of the narrator, which I found very annoying.
The book has some humor but nowhere near the wit of "McCarthy's Bar," "'Round Ireland With a Fridge," "A Course Called Ireland," or "Pint-Sized Ireland." Yet the narrator treats it as a comic masterpiece. Every fact is delivered as a punch line, way over the top over-acting. Too bad it wasn't read with the honesty of Edward Enfield's reading of "Freewheeling Through Ireland."
"A Pint of Plain" is definitely one case of read the book rather than listen to it
    great
very pleasurable and could actually visualise the pubs would highly recommend this book to publicans
    Read the book, don't listen
The narrator has a nice voice, but doesn't bother to get correct the pronunciation of anything unfamiliar to him. The book itself is well written.

Title: Where the Money Grows and Anatomy of the Bubble
    Author: Garet Garrett
    Narrator: Tom Perkins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-17-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Hugely popular when it was first published in 1911, and regarded as a classic ever since, Where the Money Grows is an honest, humorous, and richly perceptive tour of Wall Street and its enduring customs, institutions, and characters. The Street, according to author Garet Garrett, is a world populated not only by bulls and bears, but also by "wolves", "hoodoos", and "invisibles". You'll meet them all in this immensely entertaining and revealing book.
Also included is a scintillating article, "Anatomy of the Bubble", originally published in the Saturday Evening Post. In piercing prose, Garrett unmasks the "debt" bubble and displays uncanny prescience. Debt, it would seem, can be every bit as dangerous as manias and other "irrational exuberance".
    Members Reviews:
    Anatomy of the Bubble: BRILLIANT
The "Anatomy" segment in the book's later part is plain-spoken, eloquent, elegant in its timeless explanations of credit and its use and misuse (and its part in history and economic busts). It was written around 1931-32, but would perfectly describe subprime's woes and 2008.
"Where the Money Grows" is enjoyable, an anecdote-filled tour of Wall Street and its denizens circa 1911, I think. It takes a lot of the gloss and varnish off the fancy exalted image many hold, and shows the same dreamers and shills one can find (though geographically scattered further) still drawn to its flame today. I like the debunking plain-talk approach to it all. I regret this one is not longer, it is easy on the ears and mind, but has enough substance to keep my attention.
    Well explained
Especially the two last articles were very interesting and very well explained. I can't believe Milton Friedman didn't read this.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 30 mins

    Release date: 11-13-09
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
When the first edition of Financial Reckoning Day was published more than six years ago, many critics felt that maverick financial writers Addison Wiggin and William Bonner were overly critical of the United States' increasing debt and the start of what seemed to be the foreshadowing of economic concerns. Fast-forward to 2009, and much of what the authors predicted has come true: high unemployment rates, record-setting foreclosures and bankruptcies, and the nearly global collapse of the financial institutions once thought to be so secure.
With this updated edition, Financial Reckoning Day Fallout, Wiggin and Bonner bring you even more down-to-earth wisdom. This timely guide reveals that the hazards of democratic consumer capitalism and the financial follies of history are not a thing of the past but an ongoing issue with no end in sight. With this book, you'll gain a better perspective of what's really going on and discover the steps you need to take to survive the difficult times ahead.
Honest and accurate, Financial Reckoning Day Fallout offers you the best chance to protect your assets and grow your portfolio in these difficult financial times.
    Editorial Reviews:
When the first edition of this work was published early in the twenty-first century, many felt that the authors' concerns about the nation's mounting debt and the potential for financial catastrophe were exaggerated. Mel Foster's narration is enhanced by his deft use of vocal inflections, which vary the pace of his otherwise standard delivery of business-related content. Foster emphasizes the ironic undertone of the many stories of financial destruction that could have been avoided by more prudent behavior, further lending credence to the indignation many Americans now feel toward the financial industry. But some listeners may be distracted by Foster's nasal timbre and his attempts at various accents as he takes on the personas of Germans, Russians, and Americans.
    Members Reviews:
    What's the Point?
I kept thinking there would be a point to this excruciatingly long (18 hours) book. Basically, the message of the book is that financial bubbles are an inherent part of human nature; fiat currency (paper money) never works; Allen Greenspan did nothing but inflate bubble after bubble; the dollar is bound to fail; eventually, and probably sooner rather than later, there will be financial ruin; gold is generally a good idea, but, at this point, there is really nothing one can do to avoid the coming financial collapse. The book is punctuated with quite a few interesting historical examples, but meanders from topic to topic like a drunk in search of a new bar (the authors like to make statements like that). This book is terribly in need of (1) extreme pruning, and (2) a point. There are lots of books with a similar point of view. Peter Schiff comes to mind. Peter at least gives some ideas about how to deal with the rapidly falling dollar. As for this one, my advice is don't waste your time. If you are bound to try it, listen to the last two or three hours and you will get the gist of it.
    Economics made understandable.
Would you consider the audio edition of Financial Reckoning Day Fallout to be better than the print version?
Yes, because you can re-listen to drive down the points being made. It is harder to do this when sitting down with the book.

A rogue trader is an employee of a company who makes unauthorized trades on behalf of their employer. It is a way employees use their job to make fraudulent trades. Regardless of the economic climate, rogue traders work illegally to make up for company losses they have incurred while trading for their company.
For much of history, society as a whole has defined criminals as those defective in intelligence. However, there are certain crimes which can only be committed by those who have a certain amount of education or training. White-collar crime is a term sociologists have used to describe crimes conducted by business-people and other professionals, usually relating to their workplace. Rogue traders can be seen to belong to the group of white-collar criminals. They are often highly educated in business and generally belong to financial trading companies. In fact, it is their very knowledge of trade and business that helps them conduct their crimes.

    Editorial Reviews:
Perhaps no form of law-breaking would seem to exemplify the concept of "white collar crime" so much as rogue trading, often perpetrated by a well-educated, sometimes affluent, employee of a large bank or brokerage firm. Indeed, in a business climate where profits are prized above all else and large sums of money are frequently thrown around, rogue trading may seem an institutional inevitability. This iMinds exploration of fraudulent investment focuses on two high-profile case studies in rogue trading: that of Englishman Nick Leeson and Japan's Toshihide Iguchi, who respectively brought down Barrings Bank and Daiwa Bank through their attempts to cover up losses. Actress Ellouise Rothwell strikes a suitably stark cadence as she delivers a fluid and thorough account of the two men's undoing.
