How can you pack so much into one small book?
In this second glimpse of William Bernhardt's poetry, each word is used in just the right place. As in his first collection, The White Bird, each poem stands on it's own yet the order, style, and flow makes the whole much more than the sum of it's parts. The mixture of poetic forms, points of view, and settings gives the collection a personality all its own. There is joy here and devastation. There is friendship and isolation. There is modern perspective and ancient. But throughout there is caring and conscious consideration of life's many meanings. Read it fast then go back read it ever so slowly. Multiple levels reside in each poem, each chapter, and the work as a whole.
Slam dunk again!
I loved this book, equal parts humor and angst. He weaves an ordinary life of love and loss into a captivating tapestry of life as we know it.
Sweet, poignant, painful
Iâm a fan of Bernhardtâs fiction thrillers. Anyone who knows me knows Iâm not a big fan of poetry, especially when it rhymes. So I was surprised at how much I adored Bernhardtâs first collection of poetry, The White Bird, and was happy to read this new collection. The Oceanâs Edge is thoroughly entertaining, as well as thought provoking. In these short poems, with titles like The Housewife, Favorite Christmas, Ralphâs Favorite Painting, and Madeline at the Mall, Bernhardt examines little snippets of everyday life. In other poems, such as The Night of 9/11, he remembers historical moments that changed the world for all of us. Sweet, poignant, painful - Bernhardtâs poetry reminds the reader that we are more alike than different, and weâre all in this together.
Okay, so some of the poems do rhyme, but you wonât notice.
