Awful narration

I really liked this book, and thought I would like the audio version. But like the other reviewers I have to agree, the narrator is terrible! He has got this awful nasal problem that makes him sound like Gargamel with an anger management issue. Save your credit!

Themes which I appreciate in fantasy literature

Shadowfane, the concluding volume of Janny Wurts??? Cycle of Fire trilogy is an action-packed and exciting finale. As humankind is being destroyed by demons (who we now know are aliens) Jaric has realized that he has no choice but to brave the Cycle of Fire. If he succeeds, this trial will gain him the powers of a Firelord, but he risks the destructive madness that afflicted his father.

The action never lets up and, along the way, there are plenty of wins and losses and lots of heart-breaking suffering for all of our heroes ??? especially Jaric, Taen, Taen???s mother, Corley, and the Kielmark. There are also emotional displays of courage, grace, hope, faith, forgiveness, and love ??? themes which I appreciate in fantasy literature and miss in the writings of a few recently popular authors. The ending of Shadowfane is satisfying, but intriguingly not closed.

While reading The Cycle of Fire, I found myself once again greatly admiring Ms. Wurts??? imagination. I don???t want to give anything away, so I???ll just say that I loved the science fiction elements and how Veriset Nav, motivated ??? almost consciously ??? to complete its program, developed its own mythos to hide itself from humans and aliens.

David Thorpe???s enthusiasm is infectious. If you read The Cycle of Fire this way, I suggest using Ms. Wurts??? website as a resource ??? she has posted a helpful map and a glossary.

plenty of psychological drama

Demons or aliens, star ships with the technology to create sorcerers, plenty of psychological drama reins in the last installment of The Cycle of Fire.

For those who find Janny Wurts 'too difficult' will find this trilogy fairly easy going, but with some sophisticated psychological twists. This element in Wurts' writing is what draws me to her books. As in her later work, layers are uncovered gradually to reveal depth and the unexpected.

Dreamweaver, Firelord, and Stormwarden fight heroically to save mankind from the destruction desired by alien races (or demons) in revenge for being taken from their home planets.

I do think a fourth book would be lovely. There is plenty of meat here for more.

Excellent

I was a bit worried after the first installment that this trilogy would be another copycat fantasy with limited plot. Happily, I was nicely surprised that this second book surpassed the first, and was a really enjoyable and engrossing listen.

Michael Page gives one of the best readings I have ever heard (right up there with Rob Inglis and Roy Dotrice) and manages to have distinct, recognizable voices for each and every character. I look forward to the finale!

Fantastical.

Fantastic story line. Great climax! Lovable characters and quality narration. On to the next one.

A great adventure!

This second story starts right where the last left off with all of the first book's adventure, intrigue, sorcery and emotion. And that continues all the way to its blockbuster finale.

These books have a classic feel, like I'm reading Treasure Island all over again.

The reader is amazing! There are few readers that could have brought these stories to life like Michael Page. He has me casting the movie in my mind.

Everyone raves about Patrick Rothfuss and deservedly so. After reading his first book I thought seriously about reading the next right away but changed my mind.

On the other hand, these stories I am DEVOURING. I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Lies of Locke Lamora. They are both large stories with many well developed characters. The same narator also helps.

Glad I read the Red Wolf Conspiracy...wonderful book and so is The Ruling Sea. The only problem is the narrator..he's so distracting with his summer stock Shakespearean delivery. He rolls every "R", screeches and just generally overacts .

Good book overall

I would not have downloaded book if I new they would not have book two available when they offer book three the book really leaves you hanging at the end

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I felt as if he just droned on and on and on. Almost always sounded the same. Was funny because my husband even noticed it in the next room and made a joke about it!It took me about 3/4 way through the book to FINALLY get used to it...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I would not make a film of this book. Not sure if it was because of the narrator or the fact that the main character is so annoying..

Decent for fans of the authors and genre

This is a decent story. The plot gets more interesting the further into it you get. It feels more like it was written for a younger audience. The telling of the story and sentence structure felt geared towards a juvenile. That could just be my perception. The reader...I found myself growing tired of listening to Worf after a couple hours. Overall, probably more of a 3.5 (when do we get half stars, Audible?). Decent, but not the authors' best work.

Great book

Loved the book. Wish audible had the second book in series available. The authors once again failed to disappoint. Narrator was incredible.

Extremely Disappointed!!

I really thought that any book by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman would be safe to share with my children. I have purchased and loved their works for over 30 years, and never before found a profane word in any of their books. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when "f" bombs came out of my speakers while listening to this book!! I refuse to listen any further, and will no longer feel safe purchasing one of their books to share with my children. Why would you do this, Tracy??? The narrator has a very nice deep voice (reminds me of Warf on Star Trek Enterprise), but struggles greatly trying to do the female character voices..would have been much better with a male and female narrator.

Gutes Buch zu einer emotionslosen geschichte zusammengekürzt

Ich habe das Buch vor Jahren gelesen und wollte es noch einmal mit diesem Audiobuch erleben aber leider ist es so drastisch gekürzt, dass es Teilweise schwer zu verstehen ist, und auch alle Beziehungen zwischen dan Characteren verlohren gehen.

Dass ich nicht gesehen habe, dass dies eine gekürzte Version ist, ist wohl meine eigene Schuld.

Die Leistung des Erzählers ist hingegen sehr gut und ich würde jedem empfehlen die Drachenelfen Bucher mit ihm zu hören.

Very hard to follow.

I can only say that this book was an exercise in memory to keep track of all of the character names that you are barraged with, most of which were very hard to discern. This book is supposed to read like a composite history of the "Silent House" and therefore jumps about quite a bit. I found it quite difficult to keep track of the myriad characters, most of whom you have very little time to develop any sort of connection to. There are no real protagonists in the book after the first chapter.

I was not overly thrilled by this selection.

This book stinks

I only finished it because I had nothing else to listen to. It was awful. I understand that it is the first book in a series and it had a very prequel feel to it - but it did not make any sense at all. Lots and lots of swordfights, but no real plot that makes any sense.

hard to follow

i wanted to like this book since i enjoy forgotten realms; but i just couldn't get into it. i find that audible is sorely lacking in the horror and fantasy department. i was so hoping this book would break the spell. alas, the chain of bad books continues.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Non-cohesive story, extremely difficult to follow along. Simon Vance is always excellent. But this story line jumps all over the place. Characters were brought into the story and I had no idea who they are.

This is the first Simon Vance performance, of 30+ books I've listened to, that I didn't love.

It does seem to go on and on

I found myself zoning out while listening to this audiobook. The story follows the fight over this house over generations between humans and the "coglore" which are shape changers. As the book goes on, the house takes on bigger and bigger dimensions and becomes more and more haunted. It is really more like a series of short stories that all take place in similar settings. The author can drag out some of the scenarios in the book to rediculous lengths.
