    Title: Cowl
    Author: Neal Asher
    Narrator: Peter Noble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-16-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Neal Asher's Cowl is set in the far future. The Heliothane Dominion is triumphant in the solar system after a bitter war with their Umbrathane progenitors. But some of the enemy have escaped into the past, intent on wreaking havoc across time. The worst of these is Cowl, an artificially forced advance in human evolution but one who is no longer human.
Polly, desperate to obtain funds to support her habits, is unprepared for her involvement with Nandru Jurgens, a Taskforce soldier, and the killers pursuing him. Nor can she resist the alien 'tor' which she feels impelled to attach to her arm. But she must learn fast, as she is dragged back through time, not least that to the denizens of some earlier eras, she is little more than a convenience food.
Initially the fragment of tor imbedded in Tack's wrist sums up his value to the Heliothane - a point brought home to him with bloody abruptness. But as a vat-grown programmable killer employed by U-gov, he is no stranger to violence. His long journey into the lethal world of the Heliothane is only beginning, the extent of his mission just becoming apparent.
Meanwhile, hunting throughout time and the alternates, Cowl's pet, the tor beast, grows vast and dangerous. And the beast continues to feed.

Cowl is an amazing piece of fiction
Cowl is an amazing piece of fiction, one of my favorite books. I strongly disagree with reviewers that say that it is hard to follow. That wasn't my experience at all (try reading Lions of Al Rassan, now *that* is hard to follow). The characters, dialog and world building are excellent. The pacing is great with no lulls and keeps the plot moving along. While not being hard sci-fi, there's some really interesting ideas and it has a very satisfying ending. Normally, I don't like time travel that moves into the past (I prefer forward); but, Asher keeps it very compelling by throwing in some historical information (a little reminiscent of Bill Bryson).
Time sideways as well as for/backwards
Asher goes all out in this time travel novel, not being satisfied with going back or forwards in time but going into alternate time pathways as well. He creates mega-villians but his protagonist(s) are themselves flawed people and we watch as greater threats knock them off their fates and into new opportunities, with the "godd guys" not always acting so good. The tale Asher tells is labyrinthian and it takes an effort to track who is doing what to whom but it moves along and keeps you interested, with nuggets about earth's long term history sprinkled throughout.
    5 Stars? YES!
I have never liked time travel stories... makes my head spin... but Mr. Asher's take on it was a twisty joyride! Yes, after reading the Gridlinked & Spatterjay series, it is hard to dive into a totally new arena with Cowl (you miss the Polity Universe and AIs), but this story is not a disappointment and stands on its own merits. After reading everything Neal Asher has written except Cowl, I desperately searched for other sci fi series... trust me, after reading a couple other books and returning to Asher, it feels like coming home to great writing. It was such a relief, I no longer cared it was time travel, just got engrossed in the engaging and compelling Cowl!
    Action-Packed Epic Time Travel Adventure
This is an epic time travel adventure that really appealed to me.

Welcome to the world of a universal cure.
Gordon Harding didn't ask for the life he has. He didn't ask to be orphaned. He didn't ask to go through life with cancer. And he certainly didn't ask to be pulled into a future world without warning - a world where every human being is controlled by means of a medical implant.
And when he learns that he's the only one who can destroy the base of operations, he's faced with an impossibly painful choice: either hide and let the world decay under this mysterious futuristic force, or rescue humanity from oppression, knowing that there's someone out there who is willing to use any means necessary to stop him.

Control and health, or freedom and death?
I may not have been the intended audience for this book. The pacing is good and the lack of typos and the presence of good grammar and syntax was relaxing. What I found jarring though, was that the story is told from the point of view of an eighteen or nineteen-year-old man, but the voice is that of an eight to eleven-year-old boy. Because of the constant action, I suspect the perfect reader for this book is a grade school or junior high boy.
The book opens with a scene I would have considered to be wildly improbable if I hadn't been on enough autism forums to find out there are bullies out there who act exactly as the characters in this book behaved. And when a character came down with a disease that is fairly easily managed, I was surprised to see it talked about as if it were fatal. Ah, but it's a variant of chronic leukemia that is lethal. Okay.
I found the logistics of the premise improbable (the cost of tracking down and managing seven billion people on this planet far outstrip the ability of anybody or any country or any coalition to accomplish) but I've seen far wilder premises that were easily accepted. The premise did make sense for a first-world country with wide-spread medical capacity (and it's possible that is all the author intended for the story to be about.)
So I had niggles here and there that made this a three star for me. But I also need to say this about the book. The best thing about this book was that this reader honestly had no idea what was going to happen next. After decades of reading science fiction, I've grown a bit jaded about obvious plot points, so that was refreshing. I'm looking forward to following the career of this writer and have already purchased another book by her.
A clean, fairly mellow dystopian thriller
This book is pretty good at being exactly what it advertises itself to be: A clean, fairly mellow dystopian thriller. If you are looking for a "Christian" novel, move on - nothing to see here. God is not mentioned in Implant. At best, this book teaches us that compassion and freedom are supremely important, and that the former is necessary in order to preserve the latter. After I had read it, I felt like I had watched a really good secular movie. (O thou creature of vanishing rarity!) But it didn't inspire me to glorify God, or make me think on the things of Christ.
The lack of a âChristianâ message is not why I gave the book three stars instead of four. I wasn't expecting one, and wouldn't require the book to be something I already knew it wasn't. Implant is a two-way time travel story, and in such stories, some logical issues are unavoidable.

âDrug addiction. Suffering from it is one reason I want to make a better life for all the people in the northern lands.â
New Mexico author Larry Kilham received a B.S. in engineering from the University of Colorado, an M.S. in management from MIT, worked large international companies and founded three high-tech companies and gained three patents to his credit involving innovative use of computers and researching artificial intelligence. He has published eight books about creativity and invention, artificial intelligence and digital media, travel overseas, and three novels with an AI theme. He is also a corporate consultant, a member of the American Chemical Society, and is keenly interested in automation, ecology, global resources and the science of complexity.
Larryâs impressive credentials make him not only an important voice in ruminating about the pluses and minuses of the digital era in which we find ourselves, but he accompanies his observations with sensitivity, making him a pleasure to read as well as a guru on the state of digital advances in modern day life. In this novel he tackles social problems that are becoming too wide spread. He sets the tone of this novel in the opening lines â âWe gathered together on a cold fall day. I scattered Donnaâs ashes under her favorite shade tree on our farm. My sister had spent hours there in the company of her little dog reading, dozing, and listening to music. On this day, a dozen family and friends stood around sharing memories. Everyone agreed that her future was unlimited, but her life had ended so tragically. All I could think of was the great times we had together. We played all kinds of games. We caught frogs in the pond. Donna played left field for our neighborhood softball team. And she bucked me up whenever I felt down. But Donna, like so many of our friends, had slid into drug addiction. It had started with Opa, the free drug issued by the government to make everyone feel better and, I think, to make everyone think less and accept more. Then she began to explore illegal drugs, eventually succumbing to an overdose of some homemade killer concoction. Her final words were, âDear brother, youâre so creative! Donât stop until you kill this monster.â Ever since, I have read everything I could find in an effort to find a solution to the problem that took my sister from me. Short of vaporizing all drug supplies worldwide in an instant, I considered the possibility that free will could provide the answer. Studies showed that energizing free will could unlock the mind from the pleasure traps of excess eating, drug addiction, and other health problems. With this promising insight, I would not stop until I found a way to restore peopleâs faith in free will. Maybe I had found the key to unleash what seemed to be forever in the arms of fate.â
He then begins the drama that floods the pages of this book: âI was fixated on developing my invention I called âElectra,â a Greek word meaning shining or incandescent.

Hitcher needed a job. His old squad leader, Micky, had a job that involved stealing some data from the Mexican embassy. It should have been easy, but things got messy on the way out. Micky had a way out, but it would involve Burn and Karma.
They would get him across the international border to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Hitcher could pick up some new skills in the cold war between the Southern States Union and the new United States. Easy job. Except the Holy Mexican Empire wants to make an example of Hitcher, and they're spending the pesos to bring in their best.
When easy jobs get complicated, Burn and Karma handle it. That's why they brought grenades and automatic weapons. Because easy jobs are never easy.

Don't get fast food with Karma and Burn...
Actually, it's best to not have to get involved with anything that Karma and Burn are involved in and steer clear from them if you can. Unless you like trouble, then by all means, go for it. This was a fun read with a lot of hilariously twisted moments tucked into dark plot lines. Lots of fast-paced action and interesting characters.

    Publisher's Summary:
A teenage boy born in space makes his first trip to Earth in this engrossing sci-fi adventure for fans of The Martian from award-winning author Nick Lake. He's going to a place he's never been before: home.
Moon Two is a space station that orbits approximately 250 miles above Earth. It travels 17,500 miles an hour, making one full orbit every 90 minutes. It's also the only home that 15-year-old Leo and two other teens have ever known.
Born and raised on Moon Two, Leo and the twins, Orion and Libra, are finally old enough and strong enough to endure the dangerous trip to Earth. They've been 'parented' by teams of astronauts since birth and have run countless drills to ready themselves for every conceivable difficulty they might face on the flight.
But has anything really prepared them for life on terra firma? Because while the planet may be home to billions of people, living there is more treacherous than Leo and his friends could ever have imagined, and their very survival will mean defying impossible odds.

    Great Discussions
I recieved an avanced readers copy for the purpose of reviewing. That said, this 'textspeak' that the book is written in is, I hope, just because of the unfinished status. Most ARC's are not totally edited, and there is always a disclaimer about this on the cover.
But when the book comes out I'll be checking for that textspeak because it is obnoxious.
    Onto the actual book!
This is told from the perspective of Leo, one of three teens born on a space station, in the not so distant future where 'the company' has taken over NASA and all other space programs. Leo's character growth is phenomenal, and watching him go from an intelligent, if naive, teen to a conspiracy cracker, was beautiful. His story was one of 'what it means to be human', which brings up wonderful discussion points.
The other teens were a bit bland, and never really had growth despite going through the same struggles, although some of the side characters were well written.
The plot was certainly intriguing-2 astronauts give birth in space (and before you say they would've sent those astronauts home, know that there's a reason for this) and those kids grow up in space, and are deemed strong enough to return to earth on their 16th birthdays. The consequences of them returning are well explored. They have almost no bone denisty to speak of, so they're very fragile, and the kids never realized how blue the sky really is down here. The effects of gravity are well noted, as is the taste of bacon. Everything you'd never think about living in space, most things we take for granted down here, Lake notes in fascinating detail.
Some of the plot devices were a bit lazy for me; things just worked out too perfectly because of happenstance. The ending was a bit too well wrapped up and juvenile, but I won't spoil it for anybody else.
On the whole, this book felt like an excuse to explore the consequences of human fascination with space travel-I mean, how often do those sci fi's mention that gravity is constantly pulling us down? And how much of a drag it is? The way certain sayings are taken for granted here, but to somebody who's only ever known space, they wouldn't understand. The discussion points this book provides are fantastic, and my husband and I discussed them for hours on end.

Alerik and his team find themselves in the eye of the storm, pulled between opposing factions as they search for the truths that have been buried deep beneath the Martian soil. Time is running out and they will all have to pick a side. As they uncover the mysteries surrounding the settlement, they begin to realize that nothing is what it seems, and sometimes working with the enemy is the only way to save what matters most.

    Brilliant Debut
A fantastic sci-fi tale of forgotten freedom in the not too distant future on Mars. Corruption politics, power, and greed must be brought to justice in order for the working class to survive. The lies and deceit are difficult for the two main characters to maneuver through, which makes trying to figure out who the good guys are a very difficult task.
Always fun when a believable love triangle is thrown in, even though this is far from a romance novel. Definitely more action and violence than soft moments here.
Be warned that there is a horrible cliff hanger at the end that will leave you pounding on Kyle Perkins's door, begging for the sequeal!
    A Diamond in the Not-So-Rough
I'm wary of self-published efforts on Amazon these days. I'm more than a little bit of a snob, and the sight of a misspelled word or a shakily written phrase has always been enough to send me running, my wallet clenched firmly in one white-knuckled hand.
It's a conceit, but we've all got a few of those; as such, I've never felt particularly badly about it. There are worse character flaws than to demand flawless writing from everybody who's ever put pen to paper, right? I mean, I've definitely made a few such mistakes (all the time) in my own writing, but it's okay when *I* do it.
This book is the debut work of an author who only recently discovered a love of writing. For being without the backing of a life-long interest, as such, it's more than impressive: it's simply amazing. It isn't perfectly written. It's not devoid of writing errors. It's clear that it was written without the use of an expensive professional editing service. Setting all of that aside, it is a compelling and beautifully composed story, with exciting events and interesting characters.
There is depth and breadth of scope to be had here, which impressed me. I didn't expect to be impressed. I didn't expect to feel embarrassed about my conceits, or to find myself changing a life-long tune of my own as a result.
This author has since gone on to write, and to co-write, several other books in rapid succession. In spite of this prolific rate, his work continues to compel and enthrall, revealing a rich understanding of human nature and an excellent grasp of realistic and evocative detail.
