    Title: Plasma at Work
    Author: George A. Sites
    Narrator: Michael Welte
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-18-15
    Publisher: George Sites
    Genres: Science & Technology, Environment
    Publisher's Summary:
The purpose of this audiobook is to introduce the reader to many of the applications of the plasma arc. The applications are almost endless and it is one of the emerging technologies of tomorrow.
According to Geoplasma, Municipal Waste Disposal is one of the most pressing environmental problems of the 21st century. According to the United States EPA, over 245 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were generated in the United States in 2005. Population growth has consequently resulted in a significant increase in Municipal waste for disposal. Simultaneously, there has been increased pressure on business and civic leaders for better land use, environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Plasma Arc processing of waste materials is an innovative solution. It not only effectively disposes of waste but also creates large quantities of energy from MSW, a renewable resource. The combinations of solid waste disposal challenges and the recent steep increases in energy costs make plasma arc applications an important alternative to waste disposal in many markets, particularly island and peninsular states and densely populated areas where land costs are at a premium and shipping costs are prohibitive.

Everything you always wanted to know about plasma power but didn't know who to ask.
The big picture and the real world details - If you found this book by George Sites, you probably know a little about some type of high-temperature, high-power, plasma power application and want to know more. You found what you are looking for...
The first half of the book discusses the broad world of plasma power applications and explains all of the related building blocks needed for a real system. This is a really useful overview of what a complete installed application might include. It also describes the astounding range of applications that all use the same basic plasma power supplies. Metal cutting is best known. Other applications described include simulating space re-entry temperatures, depositing metallic atoms on plastic film or glass, separating materials to their base elements, and even growing industrial diamonds.
The second half gets into the details of plasma power supplies. It describes and compares different topologies. It also details the different control systems that characterize different power supplies to suit different applications. Of particular recent interest are how these combine to improve power factor, harmonics, and operating costs.
The very best part is how the author used his years of contacts throughout the industry to include real-world photos and diagrams from numerous manufacturers to show how theory really get embodied in functioning hardware.
The companies that make large plasma power supplies and plasma torches are a small collective that generally don't share much information. Whether you are in sales, design, or end applications, you will find 'Plasma At Work' a very rare overview of this unique sphere of engineering. Very few in the industry have the author's decades of experience, and far fewer have been generous enough to share their knowledge. This is a great resource to include to any university program on power engineering.

Length: 9 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: Science & Technology, Environment
    Publisher's Summary:
Sustainability has become a compelling topic of domestic and international debate as the world searches for effective solutions to accumulating ecological problems. In Return to Nature? An Ecological Counterhistory, Fred Dallmayr demonstrates how nature has been marginalized, colonized, and abused in the modern era. Although nature was regarded as a matrix that encompassed all beings in premodern and classical thought, modern Western thinkers tend to disregard this original unity, essentially exiling nature from human life. By means of a philosophical counterhistory leading from Spinoza to Dewey and beyond, the book traces successive efforts to correct this tendency. Grounding his writing in a holistic relationism that reconnects humanity with ecology, Dallmayr pleads for the reintroduction of nature into contemporary philosophical discussion and sociopolitical practice.
Return to Nature? unites learning, intelligence, sensibility, and moral passion to offer a multifaceted history of philosophy with regard to our place in the natural world. Dallmayr's visionary writings provide an informed foundation for environmental policy and represent an impassioned call to reclaim nature in our everyday lives.

  • Out of the Woods Audiobook by Ora E. Anderson

    Title: Out of the Woods

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-26-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Environment
    Publisher's Summary:
Out of the Woods: A Bird Watcher's Year is a journey through the seasons and a joyous celebration of growing old. In 59 essays and poems, Ora E. Anderson, birder, bird carver, naturalist, and nature writer, reveals the insights and recollections of a keen-eyed observer of nature, both human and avian. The essays follow the rivers and creeks, the highways and little-known byways of Appalachia, and along the way we become nearly as familiar with its numerous bird, plant, and animal species as with the author himself.
These are not the memories of a single year, however, but of a long lifetime spent immersed in the natural world. Out of the Woods, presented with humor and passion, is an account of a well-lived, productive, and satisfying life. The essays offer an intimate portrait of a half century of life on Anderson's beloved old farm (more nearly a nature preserve), where he lived in harmony with birds and nature and followed the rhythm of the seasons. We are invited to share the joys - and the disappointments and sorrows - inherent in such a life.
This book will delight bird watchers, artists, naturalists, backyard gardeners, and anyone who is sometimes tempted to take a rutted, overgrown, and unused path just to see where it leads.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is a joy to read and rewards subsequent revisits with stylistic wit and wild beauty." (Publishers Weekly)
"Ora Anderson is the Thoreau of the Appalachian woods." (William H. Thompson, III, Editor, Bird Watcher's Digest)

    A perfectly lovely, lively memoir!
What a perfectly lovely, lively memoir. This man sounds like a beautiful person inside and out. Scattered here and there are loving little remembrances of, I assume, his wife. And all the "nature stories" are richly laced with his obvious joy and enthusiasm. I highly recommend this book. Stories of love and life and nature are always wonderful ways to pass the time.

  • Peregrine Falcon: Stories of the Blue Meanie Audiobook by Jim Enderson

Title: Peregrine Falcon: Stories of the Blue Meanie

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-12-15
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Science & Technology, Environment
    Publisher's Summary:
A superb success as a bird, combining great speed, aeronautical grace, and fearlessness... inhabitant of wild places, inaccessible cliffs, and skyscrapers... worldwide dweller, trans-equatorial migrant, and docile captive - the peregrine falcon stands alone among all others of its kind. Perhaps this is why so many varied people rushed to its aid when it faced decimation by pesticide poisoning.
In this personal and highly entertaining memoir, Jim Enderson tells stories of a lifetime spent studying, training, breeding, and simply enjoying peregrine falcons. He recalls how his boyhood interest in raptors grew into an ornithological career in which he became one of the leading experts who helped identity DDT as the cause of the peregrine falcon's sudden and massive decline across the United States. His stories reveal both the dedication that he and fellow researchers brought to the task of studying and restoring the peregrine and the hair-raising adventures that sometimes befell them along the way. Enderson also seamlessly weaves in the biology and natural history of the peregrine, as well as anecdotes about its traditional and widespread use in falconry as an aggressive yet tractable hunter, to offer a broad portrait of this splendid and intriguing falcon.
The book is published by University of Texas Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a wide-ranging and readable treatment of the peregrine's decline and rebound in North America from crash to near-recovery... In fact, Enderson was one of the main players, and this goes a long way toward giving the book credibility." (Lloyd F. Kiff, Science Director, the Peregrine Fund)
"A well written, accessible, and ultimately uplifting tale of survival." (Southeastern Naturalist)
    Members Reviews:
Worthy, informative, chatty - but no poetry...
There is much in this book that is worthy and informative. While interspersed with personal anecdotes, it mainly records the steps taken to detect and remedy the disastrous effects of DDT on raptor populations - especially the peregrine - in the 50s and 60s.
The author is an expert on peregrines and tells the story at length of how some of his close colleagues identified the causes of pesticide toxicity in the peregrine's decline. Later he goes into some detail about falconry, trapping, captive breeding etc. and the heartening revival of the species. He also describes some of the trips he took in order to record the peregrines' old hunting grounds.
However what is missing, for me, is the drama, poetry and wildness I have always associated with the peregrine after reading the magnificent book by J.A.Baker, "The Peregrine," which unforgettably describes his obsession with the bird in a powerful, deeply personal and intense way.
Compared to Baker's book, I found this audio book to be dull at times. The characters of the other scientists and specialists described were less than fascinating, although no doubt worthy of praise in the peregrine's long road back. But there are just too many names sometimes.
The narration is in a "folksy," jolly tone that I found beginning to pall after a while, although at first I liked it.
If Audible Books or any other producer had the insight to make an Audio version of J..A.
