Fantastic performance, clear and doesn't waste your time.

The narration is to the point and clear, it's done well and is exactly what you want with a tip book.

The book itself is written in plain language and covers a myriad of ways to travel, stay, and work abroad.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get out and see the world. It gets you a good perspective of your options and how to execute on your plans.

Overall it's an easy quick read that you should try if you've ever wanted to live or work abroad and feel you don't have options, because you do.

Definitely recommended

There's not all that much travel narrative in audio format, and I'm a bit picky, so thought this one seemed promising -- it was.

If you're looking for comedic asides, a la Bill Bryson, this ain't that. Closer to Theroux, although Wilson knows the area, rather than observing as a detached stranger; indeed, some of the folks he runs across he considers friends, even if he has not had any contact with the person recently. In a nutshell, the story contains observation of the scenes along the route, including what has changed since he was there long ago, as well as historical background, often going back centuries, along with reports of discussions with locals. Wilson succeeds in integrating all that quite well, although I did get a tad lost a couple of times with the history, which turned out to be no big deal.

Here's the one feature that folks have commented upon, which even I felt a bit "here we go again" by the end: we're given the detailed menu of almost everything he ate and drank. Such as ... "after my bath, I reported for dinner, where we were served broiled chicken in a soy glaze, thinly sliced eggplant strips in miso sauce, pickled radish and onion, our choice of white or brown rice, coffee cake, beer and green tea."

Brian Nishii does a terrific job with both the Japanese, and occasional Chinese, words. However, on a few occasions I wondered about his pronunciation of English ones, as though he were guessing (wrong). Those few times aside, he was a very good fit for the material.

Another lady, another bike

I like travel writing but this missed the mark a bit. I like hearing about the scenery , places, foods, highs and lows of the trip. This was like a balloon with part of the air missing. The story wasn't bad, but it lacked pizzazz.

Just another story about a lady riding a bike and pitching a tent.

Narrator did an ok job but , again , you need to have a good story to get higher star ratings.

Such a shame

This should be a good book but the author spends so long telling you how bad every country is for cycling, how bad the drivers are, how awful the trains are, the ticket guards, the general population of each country she visits you grow tired of it all. I'm halfway though and have to say the author strikes me as the sort of person who can only see the bad in things. Also I've grown tired of her getting on trains instead of actually cycling. I can't think of one positive story in this whole book and one person she meets who she likes (I lie, she liked the man who hated Belgium - misery does like company).

This is all a shame. The author seems good and the story interesting but the relentless misery of a kiwi in Europe blaming everyone but her lacks a certain humility.

Also the warning at the start of this book that she loves these countries and she doesn't mean it rings rather hollow.

Enjoyed the story however would have enjoyed the dry humour more if the narrator had a kiwi accent.
