Loved it!

One thinks of Los Angeles as anything but a Mecca of high culture but Jeryl Brunner proves that wrong. The variety of people she interviewed and the myriads and myriads of restaurants, activities, art and other institutions included in this very clever book shows that there is more to LA than one expects. Just as in her other book, the one on New York City, this is an invaluable addition to a visit. In fact I can think of no better way to prepare for a trip to LA than readng this book. I lived there for seven years and even so I found places and things to do in her new book that I never knew of when I lived there.

Not to be missed -- an LA travel "guide" with favorite haunts of Hollywood's rich and famous! Loved it as much as her first book, My City, My New York!

Great read, informative, helpful, suggestive, and entertaining

I recently got the book My City, My Los Angeles, and really enjoyed reading it, devouring it actually. I will read travel guides with the same voracious people read novels What a great idea, and perfectly executed. Los angeles is my favorite place, and love reading interviews of people living in Los Angeles and having them mention a favorite place, I have used this to get the best suggestions. I love to enjoy a place as the people who live there do rather than as a tourist. So this book is a GREAT find. The responses and the way it is organized add a real warmth to it. It gave me a deeper insight into Los Angeles, but also fascinating insight into the people themselves by their choices. J. Mascis and Angela Lansbury in one book! I couldn't put it down. You will find yourself being equally charmed by the answers and choices of favorite celebrities as the people you don't know. The recommendations even with out the delightful text are excellent, and helpfully organized at the end of each passage for easy reference. This is the guide I will be taking with me next time a travel to L.A. The recommendations are very diverse as well, covering a wide range of aesthetics, for families, romantic getaways, or the solo traveler. But quite simply, a great read!

A roller coaster bicycle ride...what an adventure!

Pierre-Yves was driven by desire, self motivated, and focused on a dream. Few people ever have the inspiration and even fewer have the burning desire to tackle and follow through on such an epic endeavor. I loved this book for the emotional roller coaster ride laced with philosophical words of wit and the observant people profilesâa book hard to put down.

Documentary, not mystery

You have to understand what this book is before you buy it. It's a combination of the historical and present-day role of the gondola in Venician life,a somewhat arcane description of building one, a rant against tourist cruise ships (which I happen to agree with), and a reprise of some of the themes from the Brunetti novels (e.g. Italian governmental corruption).

I liked the book, but not everyone will find it as fulfilling as a new Brunetti....

This short book by Donna Leon takes a unique view of Venice by a long time resident and lover of the city. Leon combines a short history and an explanation of the construction and use of this Venetian icon with relevant paintings and music. As a reader of all of her Commissario Brunetti mysteries and visitor to this her city, I felt that I "knew" Venice already. But this volume puts icing on the cake. As an over three decade resident of the city, her love and concern for Venice are evident in this volume as well. And the musicâ her love for it and her financial support over the years set the CD and words (in Venetian and English) to the "barcarole" in the center of this "Gondolian" experience. Her attack on the cruise ships which ply the Grand Canal is epic!

A primer in Spanish culture

Where does The A to Z of Spanish Culture rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed this audiobook! As a California resident, many of my neighbors and friends are Spanish-speakers. Yeah, I know, they aren't (for the most part) Spaniards, but they DO share the same language! I was interested in this audiobook because I wanted to know more about the history and culture of the people who've had such a great influence on the neighbors and friends I am so fond of. I also am aware that my knowledge of history is very Anglo-centric-so I'm making an effort to expand my knowledge of a place and people that have had such a powerful impact on world history.

At any rate, this audiobook taught me a lot about Spanish culture in an interesting and engaging manner. Whether you're learning about Spanish royalty or the ñ or tapas or the Moors, this book will give you a nice overview of Spain and its people!

Almost feels like a visit

I've been to Spain 3 times in the past 4 years and always soak up as much culture and history as I can. This book, in some ways, takes me back again and feels like another trip (taking tours, talking to locals, etc). I'll listen again before my next visit!

Mike Veseth is a fantastic writer. I really enjoyed Wine Wars, and was so excited to see the new title. The content was clearly top notch, but it was totally lost because of the guy they chose to read the text.

Narration like reading a wine list

What would have made Extreme Wine better?

To re-record the entire book, the narrator is terrible, he reads, LITERALLY as if he is reading a wine list. Zero inflection, zero appreciation for the content, and absolutely forced me to delete this book before I could make it through 10 minutes

What could Mike Veseth have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Go straight to his editor and demand a new reading from this book, anyone, and I mean ANYONE could do better.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Ever hear one of those radio commercials read by a local famous athlete? Where they stumble from word to word, jumping on each syllable like it's a life raft? Well this narrator must have played professional sports at one time in their life. The wooden inflection, it's as if someone asked a recovering alcoholic to read a book written about an alcoholic beverage.

Seriously, I could not make it through 5 minutes through a book whose content I find fascinating..seriously, I intern for no cost at wine festivals in Italy, that is how interested in this content. This narrator makes me wish I liked beer more

I think I might have already pointed out that this content is absolutely brain candy to me, however the dragging of fingernails across a field of broken wine bottles that is this narration has me wondering how this reader was ever selected by the publisher.

Not much of a narrative thread

Like many others who bought this book, I too am a fan of Man v. Food and its host Adam Richman. My hopes were high after reading the Kindle sample which made it seem like America the Edible was going to be a cross country journey to mend a broken heart by means of greasy food. Sure, there was some hints of this, but a clear narrative never materialized. There was not much sense of time or place, just what seemed like a jumble of of seemingly random anecdotes set in various cities. But America the Edible is not devoid of highlights. It is a nice book from reference standpoint and does show some flashes of good writing, however you're left feeling unsure whether or not you really learned anything about the real person or just a TV persona.

In his book, Adam describes different experiences he's had in different places in the USA. It is interesting & can give you some ideas of good places to visit to eat when you travel.

Great tie into food and experiences

nice to hear Adam's tie to everything he loves about life and food; it's very insightful to his history and connection to everything around him
