Second time around

I just reread this book and enjoyed it all over again. I've floated and fished on several stretches of the Pascagoula, Chickasawhay and Leaf rivers and consider it my home river. My ancestors settled on the upper Pascagoula before this area was part of the US and my family once owned land on the river with virgin timber. GREAT BOOK.

Paddling the Pascagoula

This book gives local perspective and knowledge of navigating the waters of the Pascagoula River for Kayakers and those who would take their canoes to this water. Good information and helpful information for longer floats or just a day.

The book was like new condition. It made interesting reading, although it could have been spiced up a bit with a few fishing experiences.and of course color photographs.

This book literally took me on a trip down these wonderful waterways. I could literally see the banks of hardwoods and Cyprus in my mind, along with the flows of each waterway. I particularly enjoyed the playful ribbing the two gentlemen engaged in, over their different choices of vessels, and their different styles of how to handle a morning waking up on the river. Very enjoyable and I highly recommend it!

A great and informative read

Scott Williams and Ernest Herndon nailed it with this book. Very well researched and written from two very different styles. Great friends and authors, these two should colaborate more often. Read this book to learn about one of the last unspoiled places in the deep south.

Margaret Eby addresses a matter that has occupied many other literary critics: what defines a Southern writer? What did you like best about this story?

Each vignette is told in such detail without seeming trite or embellished. His voice is so sincere and respectful of everyone. Every person's humanity is teased out, regardless of how strange we find their actions to be. Amazing narration throughout.

Perfect place to retire in Florida

Recently I have been looking into retirement locations. I want to plan ahead so that I find the best location for my needs. This book offered great ideas on the things that I need to remember to think about when picking the best location. For example, thinking about if the city is easy for my family to get to, or if there are health care and fitness centers that will fit my needs. I wouldn't have thought about those things when looking into the area for future prospects.

This book also helps to breakdown a few of the major cities in Florida. It notes what the local community, attractions in the area, as well as some of the reasons that this would be a nice place to live. The information on each city also includes things like cost of living, population of area, and other important facts. This is a book that I will recommend to others.

If you are looking for places outside the US to venture, then don't forget to read it's companion book.

A Must-Read on Florida retirement options

I have lived in Florida for the past 20 years. My parents retired here and I followed them to the Sunshine State. I have lived in a few places in Florida and think that I would like to stay here in my retirement so was curious about what author Clayton Geoffreys had to say about the different options. This is definitely a must-read on Florida retirement options. There is not only great information about the benefits of living in Florida, but some really good criteria to keep in mind when selecting a city. As for the cities on the list, I have either lived in or visited nearly all of them and can't think of any improvements to the list. Very well done.

I've been meaning to listen to 'Letters from Hawaii' since getting a taste years ago when I listened to Norman Dietz's reading of 'Roughing It,' which included some excerpts from 'Letters from Hawaii.' I waited till the unabridged version was available since abridged versions are so...last century. So what can you expect in this unabridged version that's probably been cut from the abridged version? I can only guess (since I haven't listened to the unabridged version), but here goes: Twain spends a lot of time writing for the moneyed commercial interests back in 1860s San Francisco and thus you're going to hear some arcana about the economics of steamships, whaling ships, and the sugar cane industry. In one of the longer letters, he also tells the story of the clipper 'the Hornet' that sunk near the equator and saw part of its crew wash ashore on the Big Island 43 days later.

So is the unabridged version worth it? My guess is that it's only worth it if you're a Twain fan and you have qualms about saying you've "read" a book when you only listened to the abridged version.

As for Robin Field, I couldn't stand him at first. Primarily for the lip smacking (which thankfully abated after a few minutes). Having appreciated Grover Gardner's and Norman Dietz's manful Twain readings, I wasn't about to accept Field's interpretation of Twain's sly humor by affecting a sort of feigned geriatric absentmindedness (Twain was 31 when he wrote 'Letters' after all!) Now, all that said, sped up to 1.25x and after the lip smacking was over, I settled into the narration and didn't mind it all that much.

Compact pocket guide for the traveler

A bit too short for me, but very informative, for all that. Those who relish numerical facts will be overjoyed with this one, but I was more thrilled with the what and why of differences between the North and South Rims in character and climate. Overall, it seems to be a quick pocket guide for visitors from any country.

Charles O renders this piece very clearly and with a pleasant manner well suited to the material.

Sounds like he pieced it together from NPS site.

The book gives you information about the length, depth, weather, geology and plant life in the canyon. But don't know if I trust the data given as several of the touring tips are just incorrect. The Skywalk does not extend out of Grand Canyon National Park, it is on tribal land. And probably would have been helpful to mention that it is hundreds of miles from Grand Canyon Village, the main tourist area. And it implies you can get to Havasu Falls by car, which is impossible. Awkward phrasing, too many incomplete thoughts. Sounds like it was written by stringing together the NPS informational signs. Makes the down and back hike sound like a quick stroll. Mentions that you need a strong heart but not that the NPS strongly recommends not attempting it in one day, and advance reservations are needed and sometimes hard to obtain to stay at Phantom Ranch or to camp below the rim.

A disappointment after Paris, Paris

Any additional comments?

This book was such a disappointment after reading and loving the same author's "Paris, Paris", which I gave three 5-stars. In Passion for Paris, I found I wasn't interested in his telling of the historic characters' lives and relationships. Additionally, the narrator made me a bit crazy. David Bowie is from San Francisco and the narrator in "Paris, Paris", an American with a passable French accent seemed very believable as Bowie telling of his experiences of various parts of Paris.

The "Passion" narrator Jean Brassard, of course had an excellent French accent, but I had a very hard time dealing with the fact that he was telling an American's story. Maybe I missed the point and with this narrator, was supposed to disregard the fact that this was written by an American ex-pat, but it bothered me.

Additionally, because I had so enjoyed Bowie's "Paris, Paris", I tried hard to get through this one, but just couldn't get into his subject matter and abandoned the book about half way through.

Great content, brought down by poor performance

The poor performance has detracted so much from this title. Especially at the beginning, and at times throughout the text is delivered with what sounds to me like mockery, almost, one could say, a sneer.

A wonderful story that will transport you.

A pleasure to listen to; beautiful story and the narrator has a great voice, but the narrator does not have a good grasp of reading Spanish pronunciation, which hurts the soul while listening to all of the port and island names around Spain.

A great story marred by grating mispronunciations

Would you listen to Seraffyn's Mediterranean Adventure again? Why?

No. I enjoyed it very much, but I have no reason to listen to it again. If anything, I would buy the book so that I could highlight specific locations and situations.

What three words best describe Clara Harriss performance?

This would have been a great performance. You could really believe that it was Lin Pardey speaking except for the glaring mispronunciations of foreign locations and nautical and boating terms. I am surprised that Clara Harris did not take the time to learn the correct pronunciation of these terms and places.

Any additional comments?

If you car considering a life of cruising, or even an extended cruise, this is worth listening too. However, it is worth listening to for a vicarious experience as well.
