The process for asking for Workplace Accommodations when you have ADHD is not always created equal.

ADHD brains have low levels of a neurotransmitter called norepinephrine and lower levels of dopamine.

Definition of a job accommodation:

A job accommodation is an adjustment to a job or work environment that makes it possible for an individual with a disability to perform their job duties. 

So here’s my interesting point of view/perspective on it all, based on my own experience. Take what resonates and leave the rest

1. Yes, ADHD is considered a disability by the ADA, but ADHD doesn’t always put a limit on what you can or are unable to do in order to perform your job duties. Sure it may have an impact on executive functioning more than someone who doesn’t have ADHD, but this does not mean you can’t do your job.
2. There are no black-and-white areas when it comes to ADHD. Each person with ADHD is unique and does not always have symptoms that would limit them to perform their job duties. Sometimes we just need extra breaks throughout the day or a longer lunch, to use a timer, or to have a spilt working shift.
3. The process that most companies use for disclosing a disability and the forms required are entirely outdated and there is not a “one size fits all” especially with ADHD. The forms are completely biased if you ask me.

We need to do better... And by WE….I mean companies out in the working professional world. We need to educate ourselves more on this topic….because ADHD is actually more common than we realize, and most women are underdiagnosed or never diagnosed. In the past, ADHD was seen as a disorder mainly in young boys and they were “hyperactive.” Most symptoms in young girls were overlooked, and often diagnosed as depression or anxiety.

Christina started the Amplify Her Podcast in 2019 when she felt that the women around her were doing incredible work, making money, and looked like they had their lives together. So she bought a mic and started interviewing her community. This turned into interviewing more and more women, and she realized no one knows what they're doing. 1. Realizing where your current reality is and write it down

2. Write down specific areas you want to build. How do you want it to look & feel? 

3. Draw it! Draw out the vision on paper. You can now create your vision board. Put it in places where are going to see it EVERY day!

4. If you are a fan of affirmations record your affirmations- your own voice saying your affirmation getting yourself closer to your vision.

This is where your conscious & subconscious begin to meet.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently. Especially when it comes to my ADHD journey. When my fear is met with love, it doesn’t seem so scary. In fact, I’ve now come to discover the many gifts my squiggly brain has to offer. Many of which, have now become my superpowers. Now I get it! When I am looking at it through the lens of love, I am making friends with my ADHD…ADHD is merely an extension and expression of who I am…and who I am is AMAZING! So I guess you could say, I’ve discovered a brand new amazing possibility in my life. What a relief! This awesome awareness has allowed me to step into my- SELF more and be more fully and truly ME. it’s no longer seen as a hindrance, but now one of my best qualities…one of my superpowers!

Hi. I’m Carmen Shields and I have ADHD and it's really hard for me to talk about. I got diagnosed for the first time at age 35. I sat on the diagnosis for about 5 months before I decided maybe I need some help navigating this phase of my life. Because the reality of it is... I've probably had it my whole life and never knew. It's been a struggle to talk about and I haven't really shared it with anyone even my family members. In this episode, I share part 1 of my story and hope it resonates with at least one person. Take what resonates and leave the rest!
