    Arlene Limas OLY meets with Stephanie Cyr of Strength Within Self-Defense!

    Stephanie is a practicing martial artist with nearly thirty years of experience across more than 10 different martial arts. She holds a 6th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, in which she has been a coach, official, instructor, and competitor with State and National championships. Stephanie is also a mother of four, including an 18-year-old daughter, who has assisted Stephanie's clinics for high school students. Currently, Stephanie is a Professor of Self Defense at San Francisco State University and a consultant for the San Francisco Unified School District. Based on her years of experience and evidence-based studies, she has developed age-appropriate curriculums for students from kindergarten through college. Also, Stephanie is writing public policy to instill self-defense in physical education programs throughout the country. Before she turned to teach full-time, Stephanie was a practicing attorney. This unique background and instruction in the relevant case law round out her comprehensive approach.

    Nancy joins Arlene Limas OLY, CEO of PAVE Prevention to share her story, healing from traumatic events, the effects of violence long term, the culture of violence in sport, and questions from the audience at the time of recording on March 3rd.  

    A life-long advocate for access and equality in athletics, internationally recognized legal expert on sports issues, scholar, and author Nancy Hogshead-Makar has a commitment to equality, using sport as a vehicle for social change. As one of the foremost exponents of gender equity, she advocates for access and equality in sports participation. Legal issues include sexual harassment, sexual abuse and assault, employment, pregnancy, and legal enforcement under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

    Hogshead-Makar has testified in Congress numerous times on the topic of gender equity in athletics, written numerous scholarly and lay articles, and has been a frequent guest on national news programs on the topic, including 60 Minutes, Fox News, CNN, ESPN, NPR, MSNBC and network morning news programming.

    Julie Harmon, Ph.D., is the founding Board Chair for the Association of ESD Professionals and a member of the Executive, Membership, and Ethics & Conduct Committees.

    For the past 30 years, Julie has dedicated her professional life to preventing and protecting people from violence. As a director for IMPACT, she has programmed coursework, developed organizational and agency safety policy, and created and implemented skills-based personal safety curricula. 

    Julie applies her extensive background in psychology, chemical dependency, counseling, and training to her empowerment self-defense work and the complexity of issues intersecting personal violence and personal safety. She has consulted with the National Institute of Corrections and has worked in public and private mental health systems. She is an expert at designing, adapting, and developing curricula to meet the interpersonal needs of a wide range of groups, from children to adults to people with special behavioral and cognitive needs to those recovering from trauma. Julie is the former Treasurer of IMPACT International and has been training staff and communities across the United States, in Mexico, and in Israel since 1993. For 11 years, she co-owned a martial arts school for women and children. 

    When not teaching or talking, Julie enjoys digging in the dirt, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, and sharing time with friends, family, and sunshine.

    Disrupting The Dominoes: Episode 2 Featuring Magdalena Diaz, co-founder of Soul Warriors ESD

    Magdalena Diaz currently works at one of the country's largest public universities where has worked in Student Affairs since 2017. In her role, she provides trauma-informed responses to issues of sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking throughout the campus community. 

    She is the co-founder of Soul Warriors ESD, whose goal is to facilitate Empowerment Self Defense workshops through a trauma-informed and decolonial lens. 

    Magdalena previously served as the Legal Department Manager at a domestic violence advocacy center in Orange County. During that time, she co-developed the Courthouse Advocacy Project, which now serves nearly 1,800 domestic violence survivors each year in Orange County. 

    She is certified in Mental Health Recovery and Trauma-Informed Care and is also a certified Restorative Justice Facilitator. She is also a level one Empowerment Self Defense Instructor. Magdalena is a first-generation professional who received her BA in Psychology from California State University Long Beach and her MA in Education with a concentration in Counseling at San Diego State University. 

    She enjoys spending time with her family, fashion, food, traveling, and collecting Starbucks tumblers.
