We also discuss why a beautifully maintained Haunted Mansion may actually be creepier than a run-down one, examine the symbolism hidden within its gardens and trees, and explore how Imagineers have balanced historical authenticity with storytelling over the decades.

The captain and crew of Pirates of the Caribbean have some secrets… but you have to know where to look to find them. 

On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we explore the incredible details of the Crew & Captain’s quarters of Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Along the way we dig up some historic recordings, concept art, and Imagineering documents that tell a bigger story than most people know about who these skeletons are and the life they led. 

After unearthing the origin of the Redhead portrait and discovering antique weaponry with Kirk, we both are surprised by the sounds you can still hear today that tell a significant part of the story, 

Kate then takes us on a journey through the history of nightcaps and canopies, Kirk shares the rough history of fiascos and pirate prosthesis, and we both marvel at the thought that perhaps there’s more to these deceased pirates than anyone has ever realized… and possibly a hidden signature of Marc Davis himself.

This beach is a crime scene… but thanks to Marc Davis, we have enough evidence to solve the crime. 

On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we slide down into the ghostly grotto to explore Dead Man's Cove and Hurricane scenes in depth. Along the way, we take the microscope to the history of this iconic scene to explain what actually happened to the pirates, identify some sea critters and plant life, and explore the creative process that brought us to the final version using rare Imagineering documents, concept art, and never-used (but recorded) audio tracks. 

Kate checked out Marc Davis’s 1951 library books to identify a source of inspiration, Kirk takes us on a journey through shipwrecks and crabs, and we both have some questions about what ACTUALLY happened to the real human remains from 1967 after they left the attraction… including some evidence that a story commonly told may not be entirely true.

Which Disney attraction had the greatest impact over time, Pirates of the Caribbean or the Haunted Mansion?

On this week’s episode of Distory Nite Shift, we meet our newest addition to our Distory co-host team before diving into the design philosophy and creation of Pirates of the Caribbean and New Orleans Square, all leading to a question that has sparked debate among Disney history fans for decades:

Which attraction has had the greater influence on Disney history: Pirates of the Caribbean or Haunted Mansion?

Along the way, we take some rabbit trails exploring some character design and attraction facades, before discussing if kinetic motion is important in the Disney parks and having a conversation about Disney inclusive spaces. What storytelling do most people miss in the Pirates of the Caribbean queue while they are waiting in line? And what bizarre detail dates back to Disneyland’s opening day?

On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we examine the history of the exterior facade and queue for Disneyland’s iconic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Along the way, we find some history that most people overlook, like an odd old tree with some history, a mysterious anchor, and a sign of welcome in plain sight. Kirk gives us a botanical tour of the plants in the queue, Kate points out some features of New Orleans Square that have a hidden meaning, and we both question the effectiveness of the flyover bridge.

As we discover architectural concepts and original Imagineering documents throughout this episode, we discover that this exterior queue has so many fascinating details you’ll (almost) get excited to stand in line for this classic Disney ride.
