In this episode of Diva Tonight, host Carlene sits down with her close friend Jean Marie Nairn for an intimate and incredibly raw conversation about the intersection of motherhood, single parenting, and building financial stability during a global crisis. Jean Marie shares her powerful personal journey of transitioning from a "pick up and go" single lifestyle in Brampton to becoming a single mother to her bubbly two-year-old son, Kai. She opens up about the massive leap of faith it took to pack up and move provinces to Edmonton, Alberta, driven by a fierce determination to find cheaper rent, secure a high-paying job, and escape the hyper-saturated Ontario job market to build a better future for her child.
The core of the conversation focuses heavily on the isolating struggles of navigating a pandemic with a highly social toddler, surviving a sub-zero winter hitting -44°C, and managing the emotional fallout of separating from her child's father just six months after giving birth. Jean Marie speaks beautifully about the necessity of shedding her "Lone Ranger" mentality, learning to fully embrace the village of friends, family, and caregivers required to raise a child. Closing with a massive wake-up call for listeners, she details why relying on a single stream of income or government support is a major risk, urging parents and single individuals alike to quiet their minds during lockdowns and actively build multiple side hustles, invest, and master new skills to recession-proof their lives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, dating suddenly came with a whole new set of questions: Should you date at all? How do you meet someone safely? Who is in their bubble? When is it okay to meet in person? And how do you balance the need for human connection with the need to protect yourself and others?
In this episode of Carlene Tonight now Diva Tonight, Carlene takes an honest and often humorous look at single life and dating during the pandemic, exploring how COVID-19 changed the way people connected, met potential partners, and thought about intimacy and relationships.
Carlene begins by looking at the new rules of dating during COVID-19, including the importance of having conversations about someone's social circle, COVID precautions, and who they are spending time with. For singles considering dating someone new, she raises the practical questions that suddenly became part of the dating process: How many people are you interacting with? Are you working from home? Are you comfortable meeting outdoors? What risks are you willing to take?
The episode also explores the changing world of online dating. Carlene discusses dating apps including OKCupid, Bumble, and Plenty of Fish, as well as the old-school option of telephone chat lines. While technology can help people meet and communicate, she recognizes that eventually many people want to move beyond a screen and experience the very human aspects of a relationship — including conversation, companionship, physical affection, and simply being able to spend time with another person.
One particularly timely part of the conversation is the question of physical intimacy during a pandemic. Carlene discusses the challenges of becoming intimate with someone new when COVID-19 transmission is a concern and even raises the unusual idea of masks during intimacy. She also considers whether reconnecting with an ex might seem appealing because you already know the person's history and social connections.
But Carlene doesn't suggest that people should simply stop dating. Instead, she encourages listeners to think about risk, communication, and personal responsibility. She talks about alternatives to traditional dates, including going for walks, getting coffee, hiking, exploring nature, and finding outdoor activities where people can spend time together while maintaining greater distance. For couples who have become comfortable with one another, she suggests creative at-home options such as ordering food, watching movies, playing cards, checkers, or chess.
The episode also looks at the transition from virtual dating to meeting in person. Video calls and online conversations can help two people get to know one another, but Carlene points out that meeting face-to-face can reveal another dimension of a relationship. How people interact in person can tell you a great deal about whether you actually want that person to become part of your life long-term.
Beyond dating, Carlene talks about the broader emotional impact of isolation. She acknowledges how difficult it can be to spend so much time alone, particularly when people are already dealing with lockdowns, winter weather, uncertainty, and the loss of everyday social interactions. Her message is that relationships and meaningful human connections remain important, even when the way we connect has to change.
She also encourages listeners to take care of themselves during an incredibly stressful period — getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, limiting unhealthy habits, and staying connected with others. At the same time, she emphasizes that people shouldn't allow fear to completely stop them from living their lives. Instead, listeners should educate themselves, assess the risks, communicate openly, and make decisions that work for their own circumstances.
There's also a strong message about kindness during difficult times. Carlene recognizes that the pandemic can create an "every person for themselves" mentality and reminds listeners to be compassionate toward others. Sometimes simply being willing to listen when someone needs to talk can make an important difference.
In this episode, Carlene explores:

Mental Health & New Habits to Cope with a Pandemic
On this episode of Carlene Tonight, Carlene sits down with registered psychotherapist Sarah Trought for an open and honest conversation about mental health, relationships, anxiety, and the challenges of coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sarah explains what psychotherapy involves and introduces the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an approach that helps people recognize the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and develop strategies to challenge unhelpful patterns. She discusses how CBT can give people practical tools they can continue using in their everyday lives.
The conversation then turns to how the pandemic has affected our relationships and emotional well-being. Sarah talks about the isolation many people experienced while staying home, as well as the relationship challenges that emerged when couples and families suddenly found themselves spending much more time together. She explains why creating structure and schedules can be particularly helpful — including setting aside time to work, spend time alone, exercise, connect with friends, and spend intentional time with a partner.
Carlene and Sarah also discuss the feeling of having so much of life outside our control during the pandemic. Rather than focusing on what we cannot change, Sarah encourages people to concentrate on the things they can control, such as maintaining a routine, getting outside, connecting with other people, and finding creative ways to stay socially engaged.
The discussion becomes especially personal as Carlene opens up about her own experiences with mental health and the importance of recognizing when you need additional support. Sarah emphasizes that people shouldn't feel they have to handle everything alone and encourages anyone who is struggling to reach out to a therapist, trusted friend, or family member.
Another important theme is the idea that mental health is an ongoing part of taking care of ourselves. Sarah explains that the goal of therapy isn't necessarily to eliminate anxiety, stress, or low moods completely. Instead, therapy can help people learn how to recognize and manage those feelings when they arise. She compares caring for our mental health to going to the dentist: something we should prioritize regularly rather than waiting until we're in crisis.
Carlene and Sarah also explore why conversations about mental health can be difficult within families and communities, particularly when people grow up in environments where emotions and mental health aren't openly discussed. They talk about the importance of teaching children to recognize a wider range of emotions, including anxiety, stress, nervousness, anger, sadness, and happiness, so that difficult feelings don't become frightening or unfamiliar as they grow older.
As the episode looks at practical ways to cope while waiting for professional support, Sarah offers simple areas to check in on: exercise, diet, sleep, alcohol consumption, and social connection. She explains that even small changes — such as scheduling a daily walk or arranging a phone or video call with someone — can help create structure and connection during difficult periods.
This episode is a thoughtful and timely conversation about mental health, self-care, relationships, isolation, anxiety, therapy, and building healthier habits during uncertain times. Carlene and Sarah's candid discussion reminds listeners that asking for help is a strength, that mental health deserves the same attention as physical health, and that sometimes creating small, manageable routines can make a meaningful difference.

On this episode of Carlene Tonight, Carlene welcomes actor, talent representative, filmmaker, and pop-culture personality Pat Mastriani, best known to generations of fans as the unforgettable Joey Jeremiah from Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. Joining Carlene is her co-host Matt, who helps take the conversation beyond the character and into Pat's life, career, memories, and experiences both on and off the screen.
Pat opens up about what it was like growing up while working on Degrassi, explaining how acting became part of his life alongside school, friendships, and being a teenager. He reflects on playing Joey Jeremiah and how, over the years, he has come to embrace the nostalgia surrounding the character and the series. What began as a television role became something much bigger as he discovered just how deeply Degrassi had affected its audience.
The conversation explores why Degrassi continues to resonate with viewers decades after its original run. Pat shares stories from meeting fans across Canada and North America and hearing how the show helped people navigate difficult periods in their own teenage years. For many fans, the characters weren't simply television personalities — they represented friends, experiences, and even the high school experience they wished they had. Pat discusses the unique relationship between the cast and the show's longtime audience and how social media has created an opportunity that simply didn't exist when the original series aired.
Carlene and Matt also revisit some of the show's most memorable storylines, including Schools Out, Joey and Caitlin's relationship, Stephanie Kaye, and the show's willingness to tackle difficult and sometimes controversial subjects. Pat explains why Degrassi was intentionally different from more polished teen dramas such as Beverly Hills, 90210, and how the show's writers and creative team worked to portray teenagers and their problems in a more realistic way.
One of the most fascinating parts of the conversation is Pat's discussion of the people behind the scenes. He talks about writer Yan Moore, director and co-creator Kit Hood, and the many cast and crew members whose contributions helped shape the world of Degrassi. Pat reflects on the importance of recognizing those "unsung heroes" and shares the story behind the Narbo Award presented to Yan Moore during the Degrassi Palooza reunion.
Pat also discusses organizing the three-day Degrassi Palooza event, which brought approximately 300 fans together with members of the original cast and creative team. He describes the emotional experience of reconnecting with former castmates after decades, meeting fans face-to-face, revisiting the show's history, and creating a documentary capturing those memories.
The episode takes a more personal turn when Pat talks about the entertainment industry's struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic. With live events, conventions, music, film, and television productions heavily affected, he reflects on the uncertainty facing performers, independent venues, convention organizers, and other people whose livelihoods depend on live entertainment. He also talks about finding ways to remain creative during an incredibly difficult period, including writing his autobiography and working on documentary projects.
Perhaps the most memorable message of the episode comes when Pat explains his idea of "micro moments." Drawing from his experiences meeting fans at conventions, he talks about how even a 30-second interaction can leave a lasting impression on another person. He shares a powerful story involving filmmaker Kevin Smith, whose memory of meeting Pat years earlier became an unexpected lesson about how our smallest interactions can affect someone else's life. Pat also recalls meeting one of his own inspirations, Michael J. Fox, and how Fox influenced the way he approached playing Joey Jeremiah.
Throughout the conversation, there is plenty of humor and nostalgia as Carlene and Pat reminisce about their own connection from their days working at a talent agency, including some playful stories that Matt gets to hear for the first time. The episode balances laughter, behind-the-scenes memories, pop-culture history, and thoughtful reflections on friendship, fandom, creativity, and the lasting impact we can have on one another.
Carlene Tonight with Pat Mastriani is ultimately a conversation about much more than Degrassi. It's about growing up, looking back, reconnecting with the past, appreciating the people who helped shape our lives, and understanding that sometimes the smallest moments can become the memories people carry with them for years.
