Use This Plan to Eliminate Existing Clutter from Your Home
Step 1 to achieving a particular result is to establish a goal.
Step 2 is to develop a plan to get there.
Write down all the rooms or areas with clutter you want to tackle.
- Grade each space based on the severity of the clutter to help you prioritize your time. For example, on a scale of 1-3. 3 being the most cluttered.
- Tackle one room or one space at a time.
- Set completion dates for each part of your cleanup, making sure to set timelines that are attainable, so you don’t derail yourself.
- Plan out times to work on specific areas when you expect decluttering to take longer than a few hours, such as the basement or garage.
You will need to set up a system for sorting items.
You can create your own method or use the popular Three-Box Method. The Three-Box Method forces you to decide item-by-item and avoid making a bigger mess than the one you started with.
Gather three boxes or storage bins and label them as “Keep,” “Get Rid Of,” and “Put In Storage.” Use this guideline to help sort your items:
Keep: Things you use in your daily life
Empty this box after you complete each space, putting items in their newly designated home.
Get Rid Of: Things you no longer have use for
Options for Get rid of
· Throw it in the garbage.
· Recycle it
· Donate it
· Garage sale
Put in Storage: Seasonal or sentimental items
Prepare your mind for this process. Here are a few tips to help wrap your head around or get your head in the de-cluttering game.
1. Follow the 80/20 Rule (80% of the results come from 20% of the effort)
2. Check if the Item Works
3. Think of the Last Time You Needed It
4. Ask Yourself do I really love this
5. Start with small projects that yield big results
Depending on the clutter level, it may take you anywhere from an afternoon to a full weekend of work to clear out and a room or area. Slow and steady wins the race.
