Growing up in the 60's,70's & 80's, I was exposed to a lot @ various events, radio & my then eldest sisters boyfriend who played congas in a Latin jazz band. Every time he'd give me a ride to school, he would drop me some of the greatest jazz artist, most of which I never heard of. But it wasn't until later when I met my friend Mike Nichols out of NYC in the early 90's where he educated me to John Coltrane. How this came about was when he first heard my mixtapes & how I played whatever I wanted & going in different directions musically with no rules. After hearing me, he said I got the man for you... John Coltrane. A Jazz artist with a style of his own & a man that NEVER played with rules... Me with my influences on AM radio before FM & when music wasn't segregated. Station's like CKLW out of the Motor-City right across Lake Erie which played Motown to some Rock to some early dance music (disco without a name). Then when I started DJing in 1977', I played just the way I heard it on the radio. From Motown to Rock n Roll to early disco.
Anyhow, here's a tape of my favorite jazz artist, Mr. John Coltrane. It also has a small interview with soft spoken John.
I hope you feel what I feel when you hear this.
