DJ Noël - Latest Mix Sessions

This monolithic phat slab of groove-bound summer-ness is being uploaded on the UK’s hottest day of 2009 so far. Ok, so 21 degrees isn’t exactly a heatwave but it’s not bad for late April London!

Get ready for a whole CD’s worth of sunshine. Burn this one and slap it in the car before the clouds return.

As with other ‘Update’ mixes, it’s all about the anthems here. We start with smoother cuts before getting stuck into some electro faves - the best of which is Afrojack’s twisted transformation of Show Me Love, a tune I can’t get enough of at the moment.

Enjoy!

More tech-tinged floor stompers, the perfect follow-on from Update Nov 08. We open with a few funky housers, including the return of MK on the mix of Studio Apartment’s Sun Will Shine. Defected record’s 10th anniversary sees them remixing some of their finest classics - Soulsearcher’s Can’t Get Enough was one of their first releases and has stayed in the my box for the last decade.

Other highlights include the new mix of Music Is The Answer and Sebastian Leger hits us with another blissed-out tech trip on Majuro.

Perfect length for a CD. Burn it, stick it in the car and... Enjoy x

It’s been years since I laid down a mix especially for Ted, and he deserves much more appreciation! In fact I mat be correct in saying that I’ve not done a totally 100% Ted-dedicated mix since I first met him 14 years ago.

I had hoped to get this together in time for his recent birthday but was too crap. Better late than never, here’s a selection of glitchy minimal cuts and hypnotic techno grooves, blended with Tedford in mind.

Some of these tracks have appeared on the podcast in previous tech sessions: I’m a supporter of my old Mixmag buddy Gavin Herlihy’s tunes. The Lucca and Chicken Lips cuts are also faves. Enjoy.

1 - Booka Shade - Night Falls

2 - Lee Jones - Aria (Tiger Stripes Remix)

3 - Ariel - Hambre (Alex Celler Tech Dub)

Here I am posting a summer mix in October - *blush*. Hopefully it’s worth the wait, and at just over two hours long, I’m trying my best to make up for it.

The usual Update formula is followed here. We start with some deeper vocal cuts, move though some bump and jack Chicago-style grooves and then hit the main room for big electro and tech anthems. And it’s all pretty commercial too - lots of remixes, rerubs and bootlegs.

Highlights for me include Matt Shrewd’s Grime Time, which first caught my ear on Unknown FM. Inland Knights make light work of Eric B’s classic rap in Where Ya At, and check out the re-workings of classics like Man With The Red face, Rich In Paradise and Born Slippy. This session also features one of my own edits of Jovonn’s mix of Mary J’s Just Fine, and we wind up with a recently rediscovered Guilty Pleasure: the euphoric 80s sequenced sythns in TFF’s Change remix.

Enjoy :)

1 - Shawn Christopher - Don't Lose The Magic (Baggi Begovic & Soul Conspiracy Remix)

2 - Los Jugaderos - What You Doing To This Girl (Norman Jay Edit - Digital Edit)

Partnering the previous release on this podcast, this sessions is a blend of deeper house cuts for laid back toasting. Less vocal and slightly more tech, Sunsnoozer brings you a selections of moodier grooves and Balearic beats to help you unwind this summer.

Special attention is worth drawing to the tunes by Jimpster, H-Foundation, Phonique and my old Mixmag mate, Gavin Herlihy - of whom I’m particularly proud for getting a release on the awesome Buzzin’ Fly records. Nice one, mate.

With the release of Defected’s recent Charles Webster compilation I’ve been delving into his back catalogue and discovering lots of lovely deep gems, which in turn have inspired a couple of new noël sessions. One of warm moody grooves (to follow) and this one of soulful vocal tracks from the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Quentin Harris and Kings Of Tomorrow.

Perfect vibes for lounging about in the sun (if we see it this summer) so load this onto your iPod if you’re off on holiday. Also good for soothing that Sunday morning feeling if you’ve been out all night.

Current favourites of mine include the Amp Fiddler, Studio Apartment and Peven Everett tracks. Enjoy.

02 Dennis Ferrer - Run Free (Tomo Experience Remix)

I’m a big fan of the blissed-out minimal trance* tech sound from the likes of Deadmau5 and Glenn Morrison, whose tunes have been appearing on this podcast for the past couple of years. Admittedly, it feels like these producers are something of one-trick ponies, but I’m loving it and thought I’d bang ‘em together on one mix before the sound gets too old and over-played.

*When I say ‘trance’, I don’t mean the Ferry Corsten / Paul Van Dyke / Mitsubishi-chomping / Gatecrasher ‘99 anthems... Although painted from the same palette, the tracks in this session are stripped down and laid back. More reminiscent of early ‘90s trance, think along the lines of Age Of Love, System 7, Uncle Bob et al. Besides, the mix opens on more of a chill-tech tip before really beginning to sparkle in the second half.

This session is not all about spanking new tunes as I’ve pulled faves from the last two years. Simply load up, plug in, and phase out.

01 Joeski - Carbibe Elektrico - Outter Limits Remix

02 Scope - Dark Style Deluxe - Sean Grieve Remix

03 Olivier Berger - It All Comes Back - Andre 101 Remix

04 Prompt - Evolve - Original Mix

06 Léger & Lake - Aqualight

07 Glenn Morrison - No Sudden Moves

08 Kaskade - 4 AM - Adam K & Soha Mix

10 Marco Demark ft Casey Barnes - Tiny Dancer - Deadmau5 Mix

Matt made his DJ debut at Driver Bar warming up the crowd with a special two hour playlist of soul, funk, broken beats, deep house, and general groove-bound chunky stuff.

Occasionally Matt challenges me to mix some of his tunes, which is never easy given the mix of genres and varying range of BPMs. My Bank Holiday mission lay in blending his playlist from 19 April, and I’m pleased to say that it’s turned out pretty well. Great summer iPod food!

Even though it made things more difficult, I stayed pretty true to M’s original running order. I cheated in a couple of places with cuts and simpler segues - BPM geeks won’t blame me given that things vary between 92 and 133. Whatever, there are some great tracks on here and no doubt I’ll be playing some of these smoother tunes as part of my Glasto sets next month.

Jon Cutler’s Groove Me and MJ Cole’s remix of Jill Scott are long-term favourites of ours, but I also like some of Matt’s phatter futureboogie-style selects: Fat John, Rhianna, Sia, Detroit Experiment all deserve a little extra volume. Even Osunlade’s Phil Collins re-rub works.

I’m not sure about the Vivian Green / Alix Alarvez section. In fact I admit to cutting the Alvarez track to a single verse and chorus because I find it far too bland. It appears I just have no soul. :-)

Something different for the podcast. Back to purer house sessions next time. Enjoy!
