DJ Noël - Latest Mix Sessions

I have a handful of new mixes to post up over the coming weeks. First up, here’s a ‘Best Of’ review of my birthday set at Driver Bar on 19th April.

The attached two hours include most of the tunes I played on the night - an eclectic party selection of funky and classic house alongside some indie remixes, electro hits and old skool hiphop.

The mix finishes just as the party did, with Ashley Beadle’s Bent remix. Kathryn emailed me a few weeks before the party and asked me to play it as something of a Big Chill flashback.

There are loads of everyone’s pictures on the photo pages of this site, try here.

I’m getting very excited about mine and Chris Healy’s joint bday bash at Driver Bar in April. I’ve been glued to the web over the last week buying and learning about new lighting gadgets. The plan is to turn the bar into a club. It’s going to be brilliant, and here are some tunes to warm you up for it.

Matty Fowler told me about a recent episode of Shameless, featuring gay Uncle Noel, and I knew I had to grab it to drop clips into a mix. Bum burglar.

A mix of the new and the old on here. Mainly funky house, bit of electro and some chilled stuff towards the end... just what ever is floating my boat at the moment really. I love the latest Groove Armada & Funkerman tracks, and I’ve recently discovered the remake of Bells Of NY, two mixes of which are included here. Enjoy, and see you in red on the 19th.

Here’s this year’s birthday mix for Selina. We open with a Rhianna track that Selina mentioned was a current favourite after she found it in another one of my mixes. It’s not the Rhianna of ‘Umbrella-ella-ella’ fame.

The mix quickly heats up with a selection of commercial funky party tunes, then gets a little chunkier before finishing off with Deadmau5’s ‘Not Exactly’, a fantastic track that’s both beautiful and gritty in equal measure. Bad Bambi!

This is a laptop session. I recorded it en route to Cuba.

The ‘Update’ formula is pretty easy to grasp: I get a bag of new/recent tunes and spin them into a session. The focus is funky house but we often warm up with some smoother deep cuts, and stick the boot in towards the end with some chunkier electro.

A partner mix to best of 07 - deep, this is volume 2. It’s one mighty slab of electro and tech greats from last year.

We kick off with a few dark and moody grooves then pick up the pace, getting grittier before finally ripping your head off with some sick bass-fuelled craziness. It’s hard to pick out some highlights from this tracklist... there’s the Chicken Lips anthem, an excellent dub from Joi Cardwell, an electro remake of Robbie Rivera’s Funk-A-Tron, and anything touched by DeadMau5 is bound to be special.

Download this mix from this page, or by subscribing to the ‘latest’ podcast feed, and you’ll get an extended version with four extra tracks, making the total playing time just shy of two hours. Enjoy!

As ever, it’s been difficult to find the time to lay down some tunes - the last mixes I did were in April ;-/ So, time to reflect on what’s been missed. I’m putting together some ‘best of 07’ mixes, each covering a few genres of house music.

First up, part 1 is a selection of laid-back sexy lounging beats. The mix opens with a cover of a Tears For Fears classic, which was actually released early 2006 but it came to my attention in April 07 at a party after a TV shoot in Cape Town. I love this version, but fear it’s just slightly on the wrong side of the cheese knife...

Other highlights for me are Miguel Migs’ Mesmerized and the tracks by M-SWIFT and Kerri Chandler. Fish Go Deep had a good year thanks to Defected picking up The Cure & The Cause, and the mix finishes with the Charles Webster remix.

All good, and just the right length to fit on a CD. Now I just need to find the time to deliver parts 2 and 3...

Yes, those lovely people at Chloé invited me back as DJ and music consultant for their Spring 2008 show and party in London.

The event took place on the top floor of Shoreditch House. The production team covered and heated the roof-top pool area and built catwalks across the water for the show. Guests were then invited to sit down for dinner.

I played through welcoming cocktails and also sequenced the music for the catwalk.

Preparing for the show was more difficult than last year as I was in LA shooting some cinema commercials. To get things approved by Chloé I posted tracks online from my hotel room and sequenced the music on the Mac during the flight back to London.

The night was a fantastic success. The attached audio is the sassy, sexy catwalk mix of disco, rock, funk and more.

Many thanks to Frederique and Kat at Chloé.

Another mix from those April sessions sees the light of day.

This is one for the head-nodders. Some minimal cuts alongside a few deeper electro faves, resulting in a nice laid back vibe. Standout tracks include the first cut, by Loco Dice, Pete Heller’s beautilful ‘Simpler’ noise, and the Aqualight track.

Hopefully this will bring you a little sunshine in our grey wet summer! Ennnnnnnnnjoy!

Time to post up another of the mixes I laid down in April. Due to the shoot in Cape Town, and a rather busy work schedule since, it’s taken me a while to get this one online.

You’ll find the usual ‘update’ formula here: start with a few deeper cuts, into current commercial funky faves, then stick the boot in with a handful of tech-y stompers.

Highlights for me are LawnChair Generals’ You Got To, Timewriter’s Lion Steps, the cute electro pop of Hypnotized and the dirt of the last two tracks. A top selection from the first quarter of the year. Enjoy.
