    News:

The State of California has approved Orange County to enter “expanded stage 2” of reopening. This includes dine-in restaurants and shopping malls. The state’s Resiliency Roadmap still doesn’t allow bars, tourist hotels, or theme parks from opening. What this does allow for is the possibility of Downtown Disney reopening. Following the lead of Disney Springs out in Florida, Downtown Disney is not expected to open until late June at the earliest. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/23/news-disneylands-orange-county-approved-to-move-into-stage-two-of-reopening/#more-340676 and https://www.mouseplanet.com/12663/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_May_26__31_2020#news4

We keep talking about all the stuff that is still closed in the Disney Universe. So, what is open around the world at the time of this podcast recording? The part of the tower that faces South Walnut Street will step down in height from 12 stories to 5. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/24/news-disneyland-releases-more-details-about-new-vacation-club-tower/ and https://wdwnt.com/2020/05/photos-new-renderings-of-disney-vacation-club-tower-at-disneyland-hotel-released-at-community-webinar/ and https://www.mouseplanet.com/12663/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_May_26__31_2020#news3

Former Disneyland Resort President, Rebecca Campbell, shared a photo touching reflection on her time at Disneyland. The photo is of Rebecca up in Walt’s apartment, standing next to the light and looking out over Main Street USA. She captioned it with “I remember my first day on the job at Disneyland, going up to Walt’s apartment, and looking out the window to see the amazing Cast Members and wonderful guests. It was a powerful moment, and one that has stuck with me ever since. I feel extremely grateful to have had this experience and to have met so many incredible people along the way. As I embark on my next role as chairman of Disney’s international business units and streaming services including Disney+, I want to thank all of you for making the Disneyland Resort truly the Happiest Place on Earth. • DLW 131: Shanghai Disneyland Returns

This week, Bob Chapek talks about reopening the parks around the world, what that is going to look like, Disney sending out surveys asking about re-openings, a glimpse inside the parks from cast members, construction restarts at the resort, we talk Shanghai Disneyland reopening and what that means for Disneyland, and more!

    News:

Disney CEO Bob Chapek was interviewed on CNBC this week talking about what it is going to take to reopen the US parks. Chapek began talking about attendance and demand. They are really encouraged by what they are seeing from Shanghai’s first day. They are going to be very disciplined on how they open up, and are going to take their time. Chapek said that it has to be Disney operations in partnership with guest behavior to make it successful. The biggest challenge that he sees is getting guests to comply with things like masks, especially in the hot weather. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/05/bob-chapek-talks-about-the-future-of-phased-disney-parks-reopenings-films-and-his-role-as-ceo-on-interview-with-cnbc-emphasizes-guests-must-wear-masks-and-do-their-part-for-u-s-reopenings/ and https://www.cnbc.com/video/2020/05/11/watch-cnbcs-full-interview-with-disney-ceo-bob-chapek.html

The Resort has updated their resort operations page online with updates on how they will handle the reopening of the parks. Things that we have talked about on the podcast previously are on the guidelines like capacity limitations, social distancing, experiences being modified, and more. – https://www.micechat.com/258995-disneyland-update-weeks-not-months/

With the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort in China, we have seen what mass temperature screenings at the parks would look like and there is a real possibility that these measures will also be coming to Disneyland. The machines that would be used for this would scan guests as they pass an entrance and only guests with an elevated temperature would be pulled aside for additional screening. – https://www.micechat.com/258995-disneyland-update-weeks-not-months/

Disneyland has been sending out surveys to guests trying to determine what guests want, expect, and would be comfortable with. What company, resort, local, state, and federal measures would be needed before they would come back and more. – https://www.micechat.com/258995-disneyland-update-weeks-not-months/

Reopening anything at the Disneyland Resort could be a ways off still, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the beginning of the phased reopening of Disney Springs out in Walt Disney World. For those not familiar with Disney Springs, it is basically Disney World’s version of Downtown Disney. The shopping and dining district will open with a limited number of third-party establishments. The rest of WDW will remain closed including the theme parks and resort hotels. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/05/disney-springs-begins-phased-reopening-on-may-20/ and https://wdwnt.com/2020/05/wdwnt-weekly-recap-shanghai-becomes-the-first-resort-to-reopen-disney-springs-phased-reopening-set-to-begin-this-month-a-shopdisney-security-scandal-company-losses-and-more/

With the update to the phased reopenings in the state of California, Disneyland might be closer to opening than many anticipated. Theme parks are not scheduled to open until Phase 3, which wasn’t expected to happen until late summer or later, but Governor Newsom said it could come in less than a month. – https://www.micechat.com/258995-disneyland-update-weeks-not-months/

On the evening of May 6th, Disney security teams at Disneyland and Walt Disney World shared some images from inside the parks during their shifts. Some of the iconic places that Security Duty Manager Tina shared were Sleeping Beauty Castle, the Mark Twain parked on the Rivers of America, New Orleans Square, Storybook Land and more. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/05/follow-along-with-our-security-teams-for-a-peek-inside-walt-disney-world-and-disneyland-resorts/

The Disneyland Resort has extended their previous offer for guests who had a vacation booked from March 16th through June 30th could take advantage of up to 20% off Disneyland Resort hotel stays between July 1st through December 31st of 2020. The deal is good on stays Sunday through Thursday only. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/08/news-disneyland-extends-offer-for-guests-affected-by-the-closures-through-july/#more-336242

The Orange County Register has reported this week that limited construction has resumed at the Disneyland Resort. Crews have returned for essential work on Avengers Campus and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. This is great news considering that there was a fear that at least the Runaway Railway might be put on hold indefinitely due to losses that Disney has sustained due to COVID-19. Crews returning to work on the upcoming attraction puts that rumor to rest for now. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/07/news-limited-essential-construction-is-starting-up-again-at-disneyland-resort/ and https://www.ocregister.com/2020/05/07/disneyland-construction-crews-return-for-limited-essential-work-during-coronavirus-closure/

Even after the successful Dapper Days at home last month, the official in person Dapper Days has been canceled. The Summer Dapper Day Outing and Expo was scheduled to take place in April, then was rescheduled for June. The events for the summer of 2020 have now been canceled all together. At this time, their November events are still on the calendar for November 14th and 15th. There is also the possibility of a smaller Dapper Day event in August, but that is to be determined. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/08/news-disneylands-summer-dapper-day-and-expo-canceled/

At the rate that we are getting Disney recipes, we might not need the parks to reopen! Just kidding! Jack-Jack Cookie Num Nums is the latest recipe to be released. According to the MiceChat article where someone used the recipe to make them, they taste just like the ones that you can get on Pixar Pier. – https://www.micechat.com/258497-how-to-make-jack-jack-cookie-num-nums-at-home/

One of the most popular things during the stay at home orders have been things that people can work on at home and help pass the time. Things like Legos and puzzles have been popular. Puzzles at our local stores have been sold out for weeks now, and even online retailers like Amazon have been sold out as well. ShopDisney has released some Disney themed puzzles that, at least for a couple of designs, are not sold out as of recording. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/05/shop-new-character-puzzles-from-ravensburger-are-ready-for-assembly-on-shopdisney/

Black Tap Restaurant is selling prints of it’s artwork displayed in the restaurant to support the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Each print will be available for 2 weeks. The first print is $60 and features Fumero’s Grampa City. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/05/06/disneylands-black-tap-restaurant-is-selling-prints-of-its-iconic-artwork-to-support-restaurant-workers/

    News:

This week, the president of the Disneyland resort, Rebecca Campbell shared some pictures on her Instagram showing Disneyland during the closure. To many fans, posting just these few glimpses into the parks is a nice break from all the bad news in the world right now. The images show Sleeping Beauty Castle, some close ups of flowers on Main Street, and some images from inside of California Adventure. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/04/22/disneylands-president-shares-photographs-from-inside-the-park/ and

The internet was a buzz with some video that was released on YouTube from a helicopter pilot that was allowed to fly over the Disneyland Resort. Typically, the air space above the resort is a no-fly zone, so this is rare footage. Projects like some hub repaving, the Frontierland entrance widening, Snow White and more are visible from above. If you like this aerial view, he also has videos of flying over Universal Studios and other attractions in the Los Angeles area. – https://www.micechat.com/258072-disneyland-update-gets-high-above-the-parks-when-they-could-reopen/ and https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/photos-video-take-a-high-definition-helicopter-tour-over-disneyland-park-during-the-extended-covid-19-parks-closure/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXTZVQqC-KQ

The Dapper Dans from Main Street, USA are back in a new video. This time the group is singing “When I See an Elephant Fly” from their homes. Once again, it is a delight to get a little bit of Disneyland and Main Street at home when we can’t be there in person. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/12639/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_April_27__May_3_2020#news7

Sunday night, the Haunted Orange County Facebook page held a live stream with the voice of Mickey Mouse, Disney Legend and Imagineer Bob Gurr, and Imagineer Tania Norris who worked on the Haunted Mansion during its planning and construction back in the 60s. – https://www.facebook.com/HauntedOrangeCounty/

The one place that Disney can bring in some income at the moment is through all the people wanting new merchandise. ShopDisney is not disappointing. A new line of Disney “letter mugs” have been released with attractions corresponding to the letter on the mug integrated with the design. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/shop-new-disneyland-disney-california-adventure-mugs-and-trinket-boxes-arrive-in-the-abcdisney-collection/

Disney Imagineer Joe Rhode has his own set of Mickey Ears that were released on shopDisney this past week and were immediately sold out. The ears are based on an aviators cap design, with goggles on the front and sherpa lined ear flaps. The ears have a compass design fitting the adventure theme. – https://www.micechat.com/258072-disneyland-update-gets-high-above-the-parks-when-they-could-reopen/

Haunted Mansion and Monsters, Inc. Disney Parks pals have also been released on shopDisney. This line of merchandise features characters from Disney Parks in a cute styling with a prop. A lot of fan favorite treats in the parks have had their recipes, or at least close approximations of the recipies, posted online recently. Fans of the Monte Cristo sandwich will want to head over to our show notes to get this tasty recipie. There are two variants, one that uses a fryer, and one fryer-less. If this is up your alley, check out our recent live stream where we made the grey stuff, ronto wraps, and a Dole Whip. A link to that is also in our show notes. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/04/21/disney-recipe-make-disneylands-signature-monte-cristo-sandwich-at-home/#more-331456 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stkcWoK1t3s

The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has put together a task force on business and job recovery. Bob Iger has been named to the 80 member task force that also includes Apple CEO Tim Cook, four former California Governors, and other business leaders. This should help outline what needs to be done to get businesses, including Disneyland, open in the coming months. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/12639/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_April_27__May_3_2020#news1

For listeners that are DVC members, this is an important update for you. Disney has updated some of its policies, specifically about reservations and points expiration. Guests that have booked rooms at Walt Disney World Resort Hotels for July are being required to check in online and not at the front desk. This process was optional previously, but is mandatory for any reservations when the parks reopen. This is something that we could see come to the Disneyland resort hotels and possibly even other chain hotels and motels around the parks. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/online-check-in-will-be-required-for-all-future-walt-disney-world-resort-room-reservations-following-covid-19-pandemic/

With the closure of the parks and hotels – not just at Disneyland, but all around the Anaheim Resort District, a video was put together by the Anaheim Police Department and shared on Facebook. The video shows the area businesses lighting up the night to show images of hope and inspiration. The Disneyland Hotel was featured with lights turned on in the rooms in the shape of a heart and Mickey ears. Other locations spelled out “hope”, “strong”, “safe” and even some happy faces. The Anaheim PD even spelled out Hope in squad cars in a vacant lot. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/disneyland-hotel-brightens-night-sky-with-heart-and-mickey-during-extended-park-closure/ and https://www.facebook.com/AnaheimPD/videos/602084617059937/

Disney has filed for a permit that will result in a $200,000 plan to renovate the Frontierland marquee that you pass under when entering the land from the hub. No specific designs have been posted yet, but hopefully Disney will share them soon. The permit calls for replacement of the 15 foot tall wooden gates, and the 16 foot long marquee. Even though everything else is not normal, the Disneyland flag ceremony is continuing on daily like normal. Disney shared a video of the ceremony on Facebook last week. The post was captioned with “Cast members at the Disneyland Resort are continuing to raise the American flag on Main Street, U.S.A. during the park’s closure. This week, Disneyland Resort President Rebecca Campbell posted a picture on Instagram of the Main Street Fire Station. Her caption read “Inside Walt Disney’s apartment overlooking Town Square at Disneyland, a light has shone through the window above the firehouse for decades. It glows as a source of inspiration to our cast and our guests as a remembrance of the man who once looked out that window to the sights of happy families making memories below. April 7th was World Health Day, which celebrates nurses, doctors, and healthcare teams around the world. In Hong Kong, the Disneyland Ambassador Melody shared a sign of appreciation, Tokyo Disney Resort shared images from inside the parks for inspiration. Some more clarity on Annual Pass waivers and extensions has been posted by Disney. Some of this we already knew, but there have been some changes to things like annual payments. If you paid for your pass in full, the expiration date will be extended for the number of days that the park has been closed. For passholders not interested in the extension, Disney will be offering a partial refund based on the length of the closure. As of April 5th, monthly payments have been stopped and any payments made between March 14th and April 4th will be refunded automatically. Once the park reopens, the monthly payments will resume. What might be different at the parks when they do reopen? Former CEO Bob Iger suggested in an interview with Barron’s that the parks would be a place that people need to feel like some form of normalcy has returned. In that case, guests have to feel safe in the parks, so adding something like temperature screenings, like they do bag screenings now could be a possibility. Iger also suggested that Disney will be looking at what their company will look like and do differently in the future as this pandemic has changed so much. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/bob-iger-suggests-temperature-screenings-for-guests-may-be-instituted-when-disney-parks-reopen-following-covid-19-pandemic/

The reason for it not being in canon is that characters that were sacrificed during Thano’s snap in the movie will be present, even though in the cinematic universe they are wiped out of the universe. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/04/avengers-campus-to-not-be-canon-with-marvel-cinematic-universe-the-snap-never-happened-in-theme-park-land/

    News:

There is no official word from Disney if the parks will be closed longer. When the parks close earlier this month, Disney had give April 1st as the re-opening date. Since then, there has been a statewide stay at home issued until April 19th suggesting the parks will be extending their closure until at least then. Another hint as to when the parks may reopen was that Disney quietly launched a hotel promotion for their resort hotels valid on stays from April 19th through June 18th. Stays must be booked now though May 31st. – https://www.micechat.com/254880-disneyland-update-the-painful-afterglow/

The Disneyland app had a routine update last week. This is something that usually isn’t noteworthy however after the update a new option was added on the menue. Currenty virtual queues are used when new attractions open, much like the boadring pass system used for the opening of Galaxy’s Edge and Rise of the Resistance. The new Virtual Queues option might suggest they are planning to use this once Avengers Campus opens or could this be a hint that virtual queues may be added to some of the popular, classic attractions? – https://www.micechat.com/254571-disneyland-app-refresh-hints-at-theme-park-future/
