  • Ep. 56 Parenting Apart - Choosing Between Co-Parenting and Parallel Parenting

Ang has talked a lot on the show about co-parenting and how to do it smoothly for the benefit of your children, but, this week Ang is exploring a different type of parenting, and one that worked for her - Parallel Parenting. Designed to give each parent more freedom over their individual choices and decisions on how they raise their child, parallel parenting is a very viable option for a lot of single parents, and one that more and more people are turning to. In this episode Ang goes into detail on what parallel parenting is, the cases where it is a better option than co-parenting and how you can adopt it so that both yourself and your children benefit now, and in the long term.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Before Ang delves into parallel parenting, she gives an overview of what co-parenting is and how it is supposed to work, which, as she explains is far from the reality of how it usually works.
    • What exactly is parallel parenting? Ang breaks down the concept, the roles and responsibilities of each parent and how it offers a viable alternative to co-parenting.
    • There are four key differences between the two types of parenting models. Ang breaks down all four so you can have a clear understanding.
    • Not all divorces are the same and not all separations are amicable. Ang explains why parallel parenting might be a better model for parents that don't always see eye to eye.

    BEST MOMENTS

"Co-Parenting is the idea that responsibilities are split 50-50, but in reality, that is rarely the case."

"In situations where co-parenting could be damaging to the children, parallel parenting can provide a more peaceful solution."

"You should never be made to feel guilty for choosing the best option for your mental health."

A licensed sex and gender feminist physiotherapist, author, researcher and professor whose expertise covers sex therapy, spiritual intimacy, parenting and social justice. In this expansive interview with Ang, Tina shares her valuable insights on the importance of creating strong bonds with your children. However, being open and honest, as Tina explains, is a pathway to a wonderfully rewarding parent and child relationship.

    ABOUT THE PODCAST

    Do I Really Hate Men?

Interesting question and one I have asked myself many times. This is not an 'I hate men' podcast neither is it just an account of my divorce and the many awful events leading up to and during it. This podcast is a safe space to delve into what happens when relationships end, it provides guidance on how to carry on being a functioning adult and/or Single Mum when you feel broken inside.

This podcast provides hope sprinkled with humour, at times its emotional at times inspiring and at times sad. I have a message to share with women around the world, come join me and your global sisters for a weekly dose of Superhero Mum inspiration and stories.

My mission - to help women and mothers globally to recover from relationship pain, lead meaningful happy lives and inspire their children to succeed.

NOTE – I need you to know that I don't hate men! It's important that you know there are many great men out there. Many fantastic fathers and single fathers trying hard to do a great job. I know little about the struggles of single fathers; however, I presume they are numerous common issues we share with these amazing men who strive to do the right thing by their children.

  • Ep. 49 Beyond the Surface - Coaching for Deeper Relationships

This week Ang is joined by Tina Laws, a relationship and intimacy consultant and mediator, who works with individuals to help them balance their careers and relationships without losing their marriage. Tina was a successful career focused woman living the life that most people envied, at least from the outside. But when she discovered that her marriage was suffering as a result of career ambitions she knew she had to take action. In this interview with Ang, Tina recounts her amazing life story and how that one realisation led her on the path to helping numerous men and women that have found themselves in the same position that she was in.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Tina is, and has been for many years in a happy marriage. However, when she started thinking about her career night and day, she realised her marriage was in danger. She explains to Ang how this set her on the path of her current career.
    • Tina explains some of the common problems she sees with clients that visit her, and how most of them stem from the same cause…complacency.
    • Tina outlines her approach to working with couples and how she always finds that, after the first meeting, the couples come to realisations that they have overlooked for years.
    • Between 60 and 70% of second marriages fail. Tina and Ang discuss why they think this is the case and the work you can do 'in between' marriages to make sure your second go is successful.

    BEST MOMENTS

"Most people think 'We're in love and that should be enough', but you have to work at your relationship everyday to keep it strong."

"The most important thing you can do to help your partner is listen."

"Intimacy doesn't start in the bedroom."

  • Ep. 48 Mother's Day, Our Way - Celebrating Mother's Day as a Single Parent

This week, Ang is tackling a subject that can often be difficult for single mothers - Mothers Day. Due to custody arrangements, it is often the case that mothers day falls on a day that is not your scheduled day with the kids, which can leave you feeling like you're missing out on your own special day. But, as Ang explains in this episode, you are not alone. Whether it's finding a way to celebrate yourself or making alternate arrangements with your children, there is always a way to make mothers day a special time of the year, regardless of your situation.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A big part of mothers day is having a partner that helps your children buy you a card or a special gift, but when that partner is no longer there, the day changes dramatically. Ang discusses the importance of planning mothers day early as a single parent to navigate this new scenario.
    • What if you can't have your kids on mothers day? It might feel like the end of the world, but it isn't as Ang has a solution!
    • The time you do get to spend with your children on mothers day is special and should be treasured. Ang shares her favourite things to do on mothers day to give you some ideas.
    • Mother's day isn't just about spending time with your children, it's also about spending time with your mother. But, if your mother is no longer here, that can be hard. Ang talks about how she remembers her mother on this special day.

    BEST MOMENTS

"If your ex refuses to change their custody day to accommodate mothers day, that says more about them than it does about you."

"Being a mother is the hardest job you'll ever love."
