Episode 6-530: The Morning After – Remember This

Let’s talk about Superbowl Life Lessons

By now, you’ve likely heard that the Kansas City Chiefs defeated

the San Francisco Forty-niners to win the 58th Superbowl.  And while that wasn’t he outcome I was hoping for, it was an engaging game, complete with an overtime.  I’ve always found that sports embody many life lessons, and this game was not an exception.

Here are a few life lessons, I was reminded of:

    ·

It’s not over, until time runs out, and when time runs out, it is over.

    ·

    Practice prepares and provides options.

    ·

Everything is not in our control – no matter how “perfect” we might be.

    ·

In life there are handoffs and we need to do the best we can to set others up for success.

    ·

It matters how we play the game, following the rules doesn’t have to negate creativity.

    ·

Winning and losing is an outcome of competition, but we can all have an attitude of gratitude and grace for being a part of the process.

    ·

Experience provides perspective that can enrich our lives, if we choose to seek out life lessons.

    ·

There are a lot of ordinary moments and hard work, behind the short moments of spotlight.

    ·

When you are given the spotlight you have a unique opportunity to impact others…be prepared.

So, it was a great game, with some great life lesson reminders

that I hope you also found valuable.

    6-529: Sharing Tough Messages

Let’s talk about receiving and giving tough messages

    Effective Communication for Tough Messages

Petrina discussed the importance of effective communication when dealing with tough messages in her profession. She

emphasized the need to focus on what needs to be changed, why it needs to be changed, and how to implement that change. She warned against getting stuck on the wrong things, such as finding fault with the messenger or focusing on people who can't affect the change. She stressed the importance of maturity in
understanding that change can lead to something positive and encouraged sharing these insights to help others handle tough messages effectively.

  • Episode 6-528: Leading – Leaning in

Let’s talk about leaders leaning in.

I was recently talking to a couple of leaders who were not getting

the results they wanted.  Admittedly, they had not tapped into relationships that could help them and they were removed what was going on.  By the time we finished our conversation they had committed to doing some important things:

    • Be intentional about communicating and partnering – This will look like timely responses, sharing beneficial information ensuring understanding of roles and responsibilities
      • Intentionally engage with key stakeholders – maintain a good understanding of who is a part of the process and ensure they have an opportunity to be heard
        • Collaboratively contribute  - work together with others to make forward momentum an be an active part of the process
        • In short, they committed to leaning in.  When things are going well or when we are

busy with our own list of priorities, it can be natural to pull away from some things
and get out of touch. Awareness is a starting point to make change.  Acknowledging our responsibilities and priorities,
is important to be able to lean in with a a high degree of commitment.

So, if you are working with or leading others, take some time to evaluate if you have leaned in or if this is an opportunity for improvement.  When we lean in we can contribute at a higher

level and we can ensure we remain engaged with the process and the outcomes. When we lean in, we demonstrate that we are all in

Episode 6-527: Getting out of Your Own Way

Sometimes we can get in the way of our own progress because we disregard the importance of our choice or we play a “What if?’ game with ourselves.   The "What If" game sounds a little like: What if I failed or looked silly?  Perhaps, the experience of failure, shame, and embarrassment might be a pathway of learning and progress.

I have some "What If" questions that might help us to get out of our own way.

What if I was honest with myself about the role I play in my circumstances?

What if I accepted that things can and do go wrong sometimes – and other times they go right or maybe even better than we have imagined or expected?

What if we acknowledged our dreams as a possibility?

What if we made decisions that would propel us toward our dream?

What if you gave yourself permission to live confidently as your best authentic self?

Sometimes it is up to us to get out of our own way.  We can get out of our way by taking the initiative to get things done, or maybe consulting or paying someone to give you the help needed to get to your next step in life.  We can be in our own way, subtlety or we can be in our own way like a boulder on a roadway.

So, this week think about how you can get out of your own way and once you have secured your path, maybe you can share it with others.

Getting out of our own way so that we can move toward our dreams and goals with dedication and commitment is certainly a way to live a more fulfilled life.

          Episode 6–524: The Looking Glass

Let’s talk about seeing the positive others see in you and

helping others to do the same.

What do you see when you look in a mirror and you see a familiar face staring back at you? The longer we live, the more our experience influences what we see.  But still we can have blind

spots. And so, I thought I would share a little about the gifts I’ve received that help reduce the size of our blind spots.

One of the best gifts I have been given over the years is for others to share what they saw in me. Fortunately, most of the time it was positive. This was such a valuable gift on multiple occasions because what others found to be value,  I had not

thought of it in that way. On other occasions, they saw things in me that I hadn’t considered to be of benefit.  This allowed me to value and intentionally utilize those gifts. It brought a sense of confidence and willingness to engage in new opportunities at a higher level.

As leaders, mentors, colleagues, friends, and parents, we have relational obligation to help bring out the best in others.  We are able to see things based on our experience that others may not see.  And when we share our observations, we can help people to find their way.  We also let them know that we see them and

that they matter. Helping people to identify their professional and technical strength might just be the confidence builder they need to get to breakthrough or the next level.

So remember that what you see in others may be hidden to them and vice-versa. And some of our talents may be hidden to us, just waiting to be discovered.

        • Episode 6–523: Power of the Pause

Episode 6–523: Power of the Pause

Let’s talk about the – Power of the Pause

It can be easy to be so busy that we lose sight of what matters in the moment or to misplace priorities.  So today I thought I’d send out a reminder about the Power of the Pause.

We have so much on our To Do lists at times, that we barely

have a moment to ourselves. Taking a pause to take inventory of our circumstances and the circumstances of those around us is important.  When we pause, we help to give ourselves the
gift of Clarity. Like cleaning the windshield or turning on the wipers. We can gain greater perspective of the path ahead when we have clarity,  we can share that clarity with others. We give
ourselves the ability to make the most of our circumstances.  When we pause we can utilize our life experiences to both anchor us and to seek new alternatives. The Pause can help give us a state of clarity.

When we have clarity, we can have greater confidence in

moving forward.  We can seek out and be discerning about truth. We can anticipate what is to come.  We can anticipate changes that may be needed.  We can focus on learning from our experiences, and applying the lessons and wisdom that has been gained. The pause allows us to reset, focus, and increase our effectiveness and efficiency. Our success in moving forward can help bolster our confidence.

Where the is clarity and confidence, there is a path to commitment, commitment in the moment and for our future. When that commitment is aligned with our values, it helps to ensure that we move forward in a manner that is consistent with the direction we want to go. Inevitably life will take unexpected turns. When that unexpected turn comes, it is time to again lean on the Power of the Pause so that we can again seek our clarity, gain confidence in the path forward, and proceed with renewed commitment.

The Power of the Pause is available to everyone.  Try pausing to ensure you are not just going through the motions, but that you are proceeding with positive, forward momentum.

The pause is another way to allow yourself time to Think, Learn, Grow, and lead a more fulfilling life.

        • Episode 6–522: Wisdom Series – Virtues

Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 31, Wisdom Series – Virtues

          Proverbs Chapter 31:25 – 27, & 31

Today our inspiration comes from the book of Proverbs, Chapter 31. We’ll be speaking about virtues of the virtuous woman.  We’ll be focusing on the later part of the chapter and looking at some virtues that we might all do well to embody. So let’s take a look at the passage.

          Chapter 31, verses 25 – 27, & verse 31. And the passage reads:

           (25) “Strength and honour are her clothing: and she  shall rejoice in time to come. (26) “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. (27) “ She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.”  And (31) “Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”.”

These verses provide some insight about the importance of our character and accompanying behaviors. This passage looks at how one carries themselves, noting this woman has characteristics of strength and honour.  Her rejoicing in time to come speaks to her disposition and hope for the future.  She

is both wise and kind. Exercising wisdom and kindness is something we should all strive to embody. She takes care of her responsibilities and does not participate in wasting time with others that are not making positive progress. Finally, she is able to enjoy the outcomes of her diligence and she can be appreciated and admired for for all the work that she has done in her home and in the city.

So, in closing we ae reminded that we should be diligent in working hard, and that we can be wise, kind, responsible, strong, and joyful, if we just choose to live those virtues and attributes.
