    Episode 420: Courage, Resilience, and Compassion - Let's Talk about Remembering 9/11

    22 years ago on September 11th, 2001, the United States and the World experienced unthinkable violence and incredible loss. The tragedy that is known as September 11th, was a terrible time that was became a venue for great displays of courage, resilience, and compassion.

    Courage:

    Many risked their lives and gave their lives to help and save others, they confronted evil and violence to protect others and they succeeded – even though great loss – they succeeded.  They taught us that we must confront the monsters of evil, no matter the cost.

    Resilience:

    Those affected mentally, physically, and through loss, taught us we must endure and get through hard times.  We forge paths not only for ourselves, but we provide guideposts for others.  Along our journey, we can accept help, offer help, give help. Our resilience doesn’t mean we forget, in means that in spite of our challenges, we can determine to live our best lives. We are not defined by our circumstances and experiences, but we can determine to use our experiences to our advantage despite our circumstances.

    Compassion:

    That horrible day and since then we have witnessed the compassion of strangers.  People coming together in thought, in action, in person to support one another. Several years ago, I was able to visit the 9/11 memorial.  There were people from all around the world coming together in great human connectedness to reflect on the magnitude and impact of the events of 9/11. There was a connection in the commonality of sharing that experience and there was compassion that transcended the difference in humanity, and even of culture and language. We are reminded through all of this of our ability to connect and care for one another.

    In conclusion:

    So especially today, but also every day, let us take time to remember lives lost and impacted by 9/11 and let us be encouraged to lead our lives courageously, resiliently, and compassionately.

    Let's Talk about Intentional Impact

    It's easy to complain about things to see what is wrong or not going the way we think they should go from our perspective.

    However, maybe our challenge when things aren't going exactly the way that we want them to go is to see them as an opportunity for improvement – for us

    to contribute to or even lead that improvement. 

    Other times, it might be an opportunity for us to understand that there may be more ways to do things than the way we might choose, to complete a task, or
    to move things forward. 

    When we are

    faced with the life test to complain or make change it might be best to look for the way we can uniquely contribute to positive change or provide positive impact.  

    The next time you are faced with an opportunity to complain or make positive change, choose positive change. 

    Choose making a positive difference. Choose to increase your skill set or apply your skill set so that you can make a difference not only for yourself, but for those around you and for those that may come after you.

    Let's Talk about Speaking with Integrity
    Have you played a game where a message is relayed from one person to another and in the end the
    message is distorted from it’s original version?  There are some important takeaways in that
    experience.

    - good intentions can still result in unwanted circumstances,

    - our experience impacts the interpretation of information,

    - be really careful with our words because of the impact they have,

    - the purest version is usually at the source – the source can provide the best interpretation.

    Remember that the thing about hearsay, is you receive it through someone else's filter. That filter may be accurate for them, but may not be that accurate for you and then it gets further distorted by your own frame of reference.

    Learn to regard second hand information as something that needs to be validated at the source and something that in most cases should not be shared.
