  • 347: Stories & Sass Solocast
2022 is here! Can you believe it? In some ways I'm excited to see a new year and in others I'm wary. The past few years have given us more and more adversity, and I don't know about you, but I don't necessarily feel ready.

But we're here regardless and no matter how much we may or may not like change, it happens. All the time!

For instance, my Burnout to Badass Course? Remember that? The course platform that we have it hosted on is closing. We received notice JUST before the new year and honestly, I grieved.

The team and I have finally hit this stride and things feel really good and we were just settling in and then we find out about CourseCraft closing. But that's just the way of it. Change is happening constantly and we have to keep working and pivoting.

    That's just life.

Listen in to hear some more fun goodies, get some good information, and get ready to be inspired. Just keep going. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other because you'll be surprised to look back days, weeks, months from now and see how far small steps have taken you.

"Have the courage and confidence to fail, because it may be leading you to a place where you have 2nd-year medical student love too." Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:47] Let's start with a story about my course host closing.

    [02:50] "Change happens."

    [04:38] Now a story about Craig and I hot-tubbing.

[04:57] My husband told me "Errin, I admire that you have kept trying."

[07:11] My last story is about my favorite Instagram post.

[08:36] Come talk to me in my Slack group.

  • 346: The Confidence to Fail with Dr. Nerissa Kreher

Let's take a walk on the dark side! Just kidding. Dr. Nerissa Kreher is a pediatric endocrinologist who left her practice to check out the world of pharma. She's gone from treating patients to creating therapies and realized that pharma really isn't the dark side.

Listen as she shares her story and why it's so important to have the confidence to fail.

Early in her medical career, Dr. Nerissa found herself intrigued by the pharma and biotech industries. Rather than treating patients day in and day out, she saw the opportunity that being on the cutting edge of technology provided. She switched her roles and hasn't looked back.

But that's not to say that it was easy. Doctors don't learn about the pharmaceutical industry or biotech while they're in medical school. They don't learn about writing resumes, conducting job searches, or any of the things that are needed when moving from medicine to pharma.

While the pharmaceutical industry is in need of doctors, that doesn't mean that the jobs are easy to come by. That's why she now coaches physicians on what the "other" side has to offer and how they can dip their toes in the water if they want.

Listen in to hear all about her story and maybe consider reaching out to her if you've wanted to stay in medicine but are ready for new challenges.

"Networking is being curious about the people around you." Dr. Nerissa Kreher

    In this episode:

[01:16] Welcome to the show, Dr. Nerissa Kreher!

[01:35] She shares her background and the magic she is bringing into the world.

[04:25] "Be curious and ask people questions."

[05:11] Listen as Dr. Kreher discusses why she chose the words' confidence to fail.

[09:08] "It's so hard to get out of railroad track mindset."

[10:05] She shares the pros of working in Pharma.

[12:18] She discusses the cons of working in Pharma.

[14:42] Dr. Kreher speaks about the next steps if you are interested in working in Pharma.

  • 345: Solocast - Last Episode of the YEAR [Celebrations, Changes, Coming Back Better]

This year has been a little amazing, a little shitty, and a whole lot of learning to lean into what makes me happy and fulfilled. This is the last episode of 2021 and I'm sharing this year's celebrations, changes, and how I'm planning to come back better.

Of course we're starting everything off with celebrations! There were so many things that happened this year to celebrate but I just picked a few. Number one, I realized that you all want to hear more about student loan debt and finances.

The number one listened to episode for Doctor Me First was the episode I did WAY back in January all about student loan debt. The most listened to episode for my Burntout to Badass Podcast was the wrap episode.

That leads me to the next thing I'm celebrating, I did it! I was really excited to create and publish this new podcast and I'm pumped for season two! Link is down below if you haven't listened yet.

Also, the Burntout to Badass Course was a cause of massive celebration. I thought this course up way back in the beginning of 2020 and we've since had 5 live rounds and helped so many amazing physicians build back after burnout.

Listen in to hear all about my changes this year and most importantly, what we're planning for next year. Happy holidays! See you in the new year.

"I think it goes to show that our children really do see the lessons that we are living rather than the ones we actively speak about." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:43] This is the last episode of the 2021!

[01:50] I share some celebrations with you from the past year.

[04:13] I talk about some changes that have happened in my life in 2021.

[05:16] Let's discuss some things coming up in 2022.

[06:47] Thank you for listening and taking this journey with me.

  • 344: Badass Spotlight - Dr. Matthea Rentea

Sometimes it's nice to sit down and chat about your experiences without really having to deep dive into them and find solutions. Sharing your story is just as powerful as healing from your past. Listen as Dr. Matthea Rentea and I sit down for another Badass Spotlight!

Dr. Matthea is a mom and a physician who found herself facing down the dark pit of burnout and didn't like who she was becoming. Much like me she fell deep into the victim/villain mentality and the people she loved most were suffering.

Since joining the Burntout to Badass program however, things have shifted. She's not feeling the well of depression rise up any longer and instead sees the world in a positive light again.

But it's taken time to get there.

We're chatting all about being in community and finding your people and why it's so important for healing and growth. What we both found was that it wasn't the people nearest and dearest to us in the local community who helped us most. Instead it was this amazing online community that moved the needle.

Listen in to hear all about Dr. Matthea, her experiences, and what she's planning to do now that she's found her second-year-resident magic again!

"We don't even know there are options. We just think we need to stay where we are at or that nothing can get better." Dr. Matthea Rentea

    In this episode:

[01:26] Welcome to the show, Dr. Matthea Rentea!

[01:47] She shares about herself and how life is treating her now.

[04:36] "Moms eat efficiency for breakfast."

[07:58] I talk about women in the online community who showed up for me, not the people who were close to me physically.

[08:48] She discusses how it's been jumping into the online community.

[10:22] "I do this work from a place of never wanting another person to feel as lonely as I did during burnout."

[11:20] She talks about what she had to do when she was on the edge of burnout.

[14:15] I share how I've always felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

[16:42] "There is learned victimhood in medicine."

[19:17] Matthea says that if she isn't taking care of herself, her children become the villains.

[22:03] Instagram is the best place to hang out with Matthea.

  • 343: Solocast - Doctor or Business Woman. Both

Weisman Child 3.0, also known as the alpha female wolf-pup, saw me leaving the other day and asked me which personality I was going to be that day, a doctor or a business woman. I loved how observant she was at that moment.

You see, she has seen the shifts and changes I've been making, and I love that I'm able to model these different personalities. She gets to learn that you don't have to be just one thing.

It was funny though, because when I told her I was being a business woman that day, she had to clarify. She asked, "But you're still going to be a doctor too, right?" I told her of course. That's what I'd be doing the next day.

She knows that I love taking care of people, but she also knows that I'm passionate about my business. She's seeing the life I live versus the life that always gets talked about.

Next time you talk to your friends and family, I challenge you to ask them to tell you how they see you. It's such an enlightening thing to know and understand!

"I think it goes to show that our children really do see the lessons that we are living rather than the ones we actively speak about." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[00:28] I have a short sweet solocast today about a conversation I had with my youngest child.

[01:09] The Alpha female wolf pup asked me if I was a doctor today or a businesswoman?

[02:19] She knows I enjoy taking care of other people.

[02:44] Ask the people around you what they see about you.

  • 342: Catching Up with Dr. Tracey O'Connell

I love it when I get to catch up with my wonderful doctor friends. Dr. Tracey O'Connell joins me to chat about all the things that have changed and shifted for her since our last discussion on episode 105. Tune in as we catch up!

When you're in medical culture, you don't believe there is any other way. It's a trap! You have the autonomy to speak up for yourself out of fierce self-compassion. Don't believe the myths that those in power in your organization keep perpetuating.

Dr. Tracy has now left practice and has struck out into the world of personal development and coaching. After years of donning the white coat in radiology, she realized that her needs were not being served.

Listen as we talk about everything from Tracey's recent past, why we need better boundaries, and ways the medical field still needs to change. Go out and gain a new perspective! Then take that perspective back to your practice!

We are huge proponents of giving yourself the gift of self-compassion. This episode is seriously a masterclass on how to approach finding balance and love for yourself and your work!

"Those things on a fundamental and emotional level that are traumatizing and shaming, they shape us in a way that haunts us." Dr. Tracey O'Connell

    In this episode:

[01:33] Welcome to the show, Dr. Tracey O'Connell!

[01:52] She shares who she is and what she is doing now.

[03:34] Listen as she discusses what has happened in her life since her first time on the show.

[08:54] She believes that connecting with Errin in the beginning spurred her on her journey to fierce self-compassion.

[10:53] I share an example of how fierce self-compassion manifests in me protecting my son.

[13:35] Tracey talks about myths that we all buy into.

[16:30] She discusses times when she has shown fierce self-compassion.

[20:29] She shares how she found a journal and saw her younger self and how nothing had changed over the years.

[25:02] She talks about being labeled not a team player because she stood up for herself.

[28:19] Tracey says that if we don't set boundaries, you don't know what is and isn't okay for you.

[31:13] I share an Instagram post I saw recently.

[35:01] She discusses how she decided working in her former practice wasn't right for her.

[39:24] Find out where you can hang out with Tracey.

  • 341: November Masterclass Recap

Super quick episode to encourage you if you're starting to feel crispy around the edges. Each month I do a masterclass. Last Sunday of the month, 1 hour, get your butt there! This month we were chatting all about burnout relapse, because it does happen, and that's okay.

If you've been following along, you know that I recently re-entered the clinical medicine world. I have LOVED it, but things have been getting a little crispy. Which brought the concept and reality of relapse to the fore of my mind.

Here's the deal. Relapse will likely happen. We are built to push ourselves because we've been doing it for so long, but now you have the tools to catch it before you get full on blackened.

But, if you're in the middle of it, here are some tips and strategies you can use to combat burnout relapse.

First, love on yourself with some self-compassion. Relapse is normal. It happens. You are no better or worse for it. Stop talking down to yourself because you've started to backslide. Second, take a break. You probably need it. Third, rest.

I share a fantastic quote at the end of the episode that you really need to hear, so listen in!

"Rest is active detox." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

    [03:33] Welcome to the show!

[03:59] You missed a great conversation about burnout relapse.

[04:25] We talked about three tips to combat relapse.

[04:29] The first one is self-compassion.

[05:08] Step number 2 is taking a break.

[05:36] The third step is resting.

    [06:23] "Rest is active detox."

    [07:00] Thank you for listening!

  • 340: Badass Spotlight - Christina Gramith, DO

If you've been following me for any amount of time you've seen my Badass Spotlight posts. I recently reached out in my Badass Slack group and let them know that I wanted to talk with them for real. Christina Gramith heard the call and reached out and I'm so excited to share this conversation with you.

Christina started listening to the podcast before Covid as she was re-entering the workforce after maternity leave. She was struggling with momming and doctoring and the podcast helped her realize that she was not alone.

She serves in Flint, an underserved community, and she is constantly double and triple booked. The pace is insane and she's working hard to find the balance she needs in her life. Which is why she recently started teaching Zumba classes.

We chat all about life and work and the various things that need to change to make medicine more attractive and accessible. The goal is to have happy doctors. Let us be productive and serve our patients and we'll be happy, #amiright ?

Listen in to hear all of this goodness!

"I'm a people pleaser. I've always been like that and I think a lot of us are." Dr. Christina Gramith

    In this episode:

[01:30] Welcome to the show, Dr. Christina Gramith!

[01:57] She shares her life and the magic she is bringing to the world.

[04:08] Listen as she discusses her burnout journey and when she connected with me.

[07:16] "A happy doctor is a productive doctor."

[09:33] I talk about getting to talk to our US representative.

[12:50] "We are all figuring out this journey and there is no gold medal at the end of it all."

  • 339: Solocast - Pause & Heal

    Let's normalize sabbatical healing.

Sometimes the bravest thing is the scariest thing to do and that is to say stop. I'm done. Sometimes the most loving and kind thing you can do for yourself is to take time away.

You see, when we try to keep pushing through rather than taking a break, we hurt more than ourselves. We hurt the organizations we work for and we do a disservice to our patients when we don't take care of ourselves.

For me it took many different modalities and years away to help me feel healed. For you it may not take that long, but you do have to work on healing.

Listen in to hear more and learn how my dog Linus inspired me to get help for myself.

"Vow to be better than what broke you, heal instead of becoming bitter." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[00:38] We are discussing a quote I received recently.

    [01:56] I share a life hack.

[02:54] It's okay to take time out!

[04:21] I talk about my dog Linus, who I adopted, who had to go to doggy rehab.

  • 338: Being Uncomfortable with Rachel Miller MD

As physicians we pride ourselves on being the leader in stressful situations. We are calm, cool, collected, and confident that we are making the right decisions to help our patients. Dr. Rachel Miller joins me to talk about why we need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

You see growth and development doesn't happen when you're perfectly comfortable with your life and circumstances. We need adversity and hard moments to help us grow and evolve.

Dr. Rachel knows this first hand as an introverted executive coach helping female physicians become strong leaders in their organizations and practices. She realized that despite her love of being in her bubble, she can and has done hard things.

Becoming a wife and mom was uncomfortable. Becoming a physician was uncomfortable. Receiving coaching in her own career was uncomfortable. Her discomfort gave way to beautiful experiences and results.

Listen in to hear more about her journey and how she's helping women in medicine to take control of their lives and careers. Being uncomfortable is not a bad thing. Let's normalize it!

"There's a lot of growth and a lot of learning that can come from admitting and telling people that you are uncomfortable." Dr. Rachel Miller

    In this episode:

[02:16] Welcome to the show, Dr. Rachel Miller!

[02:51] She shares her background and what she is putting out in the world.
