If I were to say that pain doesn't actually exist, what would you think? What if I told you that there's no such thing as a pain receptor, there is only the message your brain is sending you about the situation you're in? Sounds insane right? It's not! Listen in as I chat with Andrea Moore about chronic pain and what the underlying cause is for most people.
Andrea and I have known each other for many years now. We've both been in masterminds together and we've enjoyed building our businesses alongside each other. Honestly, when I found out that there was another physician in the room with me, I got super excited.
One of the things Andrea has struggled with most of her life is chronic pain, and the crazy thing is she didn't even know it was weird. Ever since she was a young kid she's had chronic joint pain all over her body. So much so that simply sitting through lectures for school was extremely uncomfortable.
It was this lived experience that informed her decision to go into first physical therapy and now she's a doctor studying the role of the brain in our response to pain.
Listen as she shares her story and gives us some great takeaways on the things that could be contributing to chronic pain in our bodies. Believe it or not, it's all about mindset. That's not to say that this applies to everyone, there are certainly cases that don't fit the mold, but overall, our brain is responsible for our pain.
So what makes our brain send out those signals? Listen in to learn more.
"Pain is a message our body is trying to send us." Andrea Moore DPT

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!Sometimes when you're the one with boots on the ground, seeing the devastation wrought by a pathogen, you become the person who needs to find a new path. Dr. Jeff Cohn found himself facing a spate of MRSA cases while he was still working in clinical medicine, and rather than continuing to follow outdated CDC guidelines, he used positive deviance to discover inside experts.
What does this mean?
The experts at the CDC weren't seeing the same data or results that Jeff and his team were. So he began to sort through what each team member and group knew to come up with better solutions for reducing MRSA transmission.
They put together a series of questions to determine which underlying practices each team member was using to keep from transmitting MRSA. In fact, they surveyed the specific people who were most likely to transmit the disease, but who hadn't.
It was using this method that they developed entirely new protocols regarding MRSA and other highly transmissible hospital pathogens.
Listen as Jeff shares more about this practice and his story. Do you think using positive deviance could help your practice address their internal processes?
"I could give up the responsibility of having the answer, I could approach this purely through a toddlers eyes and really be curious." Dr. Jeff Cohn
In this episode:[01:20] Welcome to the show, Dr. Jeff Cohn!
[01:32] He shares his background and what he's doing now.
[02:41] Listen as Dr. Cohn discusses the transformative approach of Positive Deviance.

[15:17] After implementing some of the ideas to stop the MRSA infections they then went around to see what was helping and what wasn't.
[18:35] Some examples of where changes were made.
[24:10] Dr. Cohn talks about the outcome of this PD project.
[28:05] He discusses some other projects he's done using the Positive Deviance approach.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!
Can you imagine being in the middle of med school and deciding that you'd really like to get a law degree as well? Cobin Soelberg did just that and then when he was done with law, he came back to get his medical degree and began practicing in anesthesiology. He's now helping physicians create sustainable money plans that support their lives and dreams.
When I met Cobin, I was drawn to his sincerity and his genuine need to help physicians with their money. I mean let's get real, money is hard. Trusting someone with your money or to provide you with good money advice, is even harder.
Here's the deal, as women, and especially as women physicians, we have a lot on our plates. Learning all the ins and outs of what it means to properly gain, build, and manage our own wealth is asking too much.
Instead we need trusted money partners who provide us with the facts and advice we need to make stellar money decisions. Cobin is one of those partners.
Listen as he shares his story and his insights on what we as women physicians can do to grow our wealth while maintaining our sanity. It's not always fun or easy, but what we can do with our money when it's properly managed is truly life changing.
What money dreams and goals do you have?
"I really always tried to explore that curiosity and really see where it took me." Dr. Cobin Soelberg

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!If you're a physician who is married with a family, you know how hard it can be to wear the right hat at the right time and keep everyone happy. Not that it's your responsibility to make others happy per se, but to keep the bus driving in the lane. Dr. Jeep and Vanessa join me to talk all about physician marriage and why they created a marriage coaching business.
These two wonderful souls met when they were in college. They've gone through medical school, residency, an MBA, marriage, children, careers, etc. They've gone through it all and one of the things they've made it a point to always work on is their relationship.
What they noticed was that as we get older and transition through various periods in our lives, we lose touch with our partners. Society would tell you that it may be time to call it quits. Dr. Jeep and Vanessa would say it's time to reconnect.
The way they talk about marriage and the tips and tools they provide to help get yours back on track are simply amazing. Everything from figuring out ways to get away, just you and your partner, to creating space for both of you to decompress from work while still taking care of the family.
They even have tools and strategies for physicians who are transitioning into empty nesting territory or retirement.
No matter your age or stage, if you know your relationship could use some updates, listen in to learn more about Dr. Jeep and Vanessa and how they help physicians reconnect with the most important people in their lives.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!When you think of the word "therapy" how do you feel? For so many people therapy has a negative connotation. As if by admitting you need or want therapy, you're somehow deficient. Let's put all that to rest and get you some therapy with Sarah Jenkins Ph.D.
One of Sarah's best friends was in medical school while she was getting her degree and introduced her to her now husband. Then when she and her husband moved to Indiana for his residency and her Ph.D. program, she found herself working specifically with physicians.
She has since been working with mostly physicians to help provide tools and processes to deal with burnout, depression, and more. As she says, so often we as physicians are unwilling to seek help, but when you apply preventative measures, life is so much better.
I am a huge advocate for therapy and therapists. I think that there is room in the world for both coaching and therapy and my life is so much better now that I too see a therapist.
Listen in to hear why therapy is an effective strategy for living a healthy life and why physicians need to start seeing a therapist asap. We also chat about how things are changing for up and coming residents and doctors, in a good way!

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!
A sabbatical is possible for you, even if you're a single mom.
In the last Burntout to Badass Masterclass session we did, one of the attendees said it wasn't possible for her to take a sabbatical. She's a single mom and there's no way without another income she could make it happen. Did I even know anyone who'd done it?
I do. I do indeed!
Dr. Elizabeth Hughes was once an overworked, underappreciated dermatologist who was suffering burnout from all sides. She was in a toxic marriage, working in a toxic practice, and trying to find her way out.
After she and her ex-husband got divorced she knew she had to make a change, but she was scared. All the what-ifs started playing through her mind and it took her practice administrators telling her that she needed to take on even more clients that finally did it.
She wrote her Declaration of Independence and has been on a journey to find herself and her place in the world ever since.
Her story is AMAZING. She did the single mom sabbatical without any large amount of money in the bank, living in one of the highest cost of living states, and without any sort of plan. Learn how!
"One of the biggest tragedies that I think about medical training is that it makes doctors believe that they are good for nothing but medicine." Dr. Elizabeth Hughes
In this episode:
[01:53] Welcome to the show, Dr. Elizabeth Hughes!
[02:10] She shares what she's doing these days.
[04:47] She discusses her background and the journey to stepping away from clinical medicine.
[09:58] Listen as Dr. Hughes talks about the moment she said no more.
[13:15] She speaks about networking and about a lucrative contract that came her way.
[16:53] She took a year off, got a yoga certification, and got her coaching certification.
[18:19] Dr. Hughes talks about the healing that occurred during her year-long pause.
[20:53] She shares some advice for single moms who think they can't take time off.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!Everyone experiences burnout differently. For Katrina McGhee it was a slow burn that left her totally crispy inside. After going to business school to start what she thought was her dream career, she realized it most certainly wasn't.
She kept pushing through and tried to stay optimistic, but things just kept getting worse and worse. There she was, in her early 30s, living a shell of the life she thought she'd have.
That's when she decided to make a change. She worked hard and paid off all of her debt, saved up a good chunk of money, quit her job, and hit the road. Instead of staying stuck, she set out to live the life she'd dreamed of.
Now she helps others find their healing through taking sabbaticals. Getting out into the world and seeing things outside of her normal view helped her tremendously and she knows it can do the same for others.
Listen as Katrina shares her story and gives us tips for taking our own sabbatical.
"I really felt like my insides were crisping like they were just toasted. There wasn't a lot to give to my own life to fill my own cup and there wasn't a lot to give to the world outside of me." Katrina McGhee
In this episode:
[01:48] Welcome to the show, Katrina!

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!I love having my doctor friends on the show more than once. Here for another amazing conversation is Dr. Robyn Alley-Hay and we are getting raw and real, as usual! Dr. Robyn is an amazing friend and mentor and she joins me to chat about finding our happiness and security.
Dr. Robyn has spent much of her time volunteering and providing her services to countries across the world. Many times those areas are not as developed as here in the states. In fact, they're often extremely remote and don't have amazing living conditions.
I mean, imagine having to stay inside for months at a time because of sub-zero temperatures. I don't think I would be able to do that.
The amazing thing is how happy they are. They are so content with their lives and are happy to be here enjoying this Earth and seeing life as the blessing it is. It makes you realize how much we take our lives for granted.
Listen in to be inspired and encouraged in your own life and practice.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!I've said it before and I'll say it again, burnout destroyed my belief system. I did an entire episode on this not too long ago, and it's linked below, but recently something happened and I had to share it with you.
So my husband is still strong in his belief in the Lord and he prays with the kids each night. We've had some really scary monsters under the bed recently and prayer seems to help the kids, so I've gone along with it.
Well the other night, I was putting the alpha female wolf pup to bed and she asked me if I prayed. Needless to say, I was a little shook. Stuff started coming up for me and I had to take a step back.
I told her that I did pray but I did it a little differently and not to Jesus. She was a tad confused but asked if we could do a mommy prayer. Enter a meditative Buddhist prayer that's brought me peace.
At that moment, I realized we could all use prayer. No matter in what form or to whom, if you're a spiritual person, prayer is important.
Recently my friend and mentor Dr. Robyn Alley-Hay joined the physicians coaching alliance and walked us through a guided meditation. She gave me permission to use it, so we put it to music and here you go!
"Burnout absolutely crushed some of the Christian beliefs I was raised with." Dr. Errin Weisman

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!Welcome back Dr. Kristi Angevine! We realized as we were talking BEFORE we hit record that it has been since before the pandemic that we talked. It was amazing to catch up and see how her business has shifted as she's grown into her entrepreneurial journey. Listen in as we talk all about habits.
Last time Dr. Kristi was on her business focused on habits surrounding alcohol use as a coping and relaxation method. As she spoke with her clients and dug deeper into why they turned to alcohol, she realized booze wasn't the problem. Habits as a whole were.
She now works with her clients on harnessing the habits they've cultivated their whole lives around perfectionism, work product, and more and changing them into strengths.
Just a reminder, we are doing the best we can at this moment, and that's enough. Each day we grow and learn and open our eyes just a little bit more. Listen as Dr. Kristi shares her knowledge and wisdom and if you have some habits you'd like to break, take a minute and check out her podcast!
