As physicians, we are often burdened with wearing the white coat as an identity instead of just a profession.
Yes, we are doctors, but we are so much more than that!
I had a wonderful visit with my return guest, Dr. Cherry Chen, where we discussed how doctors can be multifaceted and lean into setting themselves up for success through real estate investment.
The options that begin to open up to us once we lean into something else have offered so much freedom. For instance, the success that Dr. Cherry has experienced through the last four years of real estate investment have presented her with the option of being able to scale back to part time medicine and experience more freedom in her life.
The beautiful thing about having investments that are putting passive income back into our lives is that we can begin to focus on our legacies and what we want to leave behind as people as opposed to just trying to survive.
When we think about real estate investment, we often think of rental houses and maintaining our own properties and finding our own tenants. While that's a common way to invest in real estate and generate passive income, there are options to invest passively as well. Commercial real estate is Dr. Cherry's preferred type of investment, because you literally just put money into it and passive income comes back to you without the hands on maintenance and pressure to fill occupancy.
By setting up a personalized strategy based upon your available time and finances and by focusing on the real estate goals that work for your time and money, you can make your money work for you and begin to open the doors to financial freedom.
"I feel like what makes real estate interesting is that we can all intuitively understand it." Dr. Cherry Chen

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!When staring burnout straight in the face, we can sometimes feel the push to jump off of the ledge and leave medicine in the dust.
So why don't we?
In this episode, I chat with the amazing Dr. Debbie Bradley and her experience with walking away from medicine and her shift into something that brought her so much more gratification.
However, the process of walking away from a practice that you've been invested in for years is never easy and it is one that I often equate to the cycle of grief. For many of us, medicine is something that we've devoted a large chunk of our lives to, and the idea of leaving that behind - although it is gratifying - comes with a bit of a mourning process as we say goodbye and transition to the next chapter.
By allowing ourselves to experience the cycle of grief and feel all the feels that it brings with it, you open the door to finding your identity in who you actually are as opposed to what you're doing. As doctors, we have to identify ourselves without our practice and that is very difficult after you have dedicated your time to becoming a doctor in your field of practice.
Drawing a boundary for what is best for you and your mental, physical, and emotional health can be hard especially when it's with something that you've dedicated your career to. But, that's OK. Hard doesn't make it wrong, hard is part of life. You will always take your experiences and knowledge with you to the next chapter and it will never completely leave you.
The other difficult component of being a physician and deciding to take a stand for yourself to move forward to the next best thing is often found in how it will impact others. Who will care for your patients? What about your team? These are difficult pills to swallow when you're trying to do the best thing for you, but we have to continue to remind ourselves that we've served and will continue to serve others as doctors in whatever area we go to and it's OK to leave people pleasing in the past and do what's best for you.
When you can show up as the best version of yourself and embrace your identity after overcoming the cycle of grief and the fear of failure, that is when you can be empowered to do your best work and advance the field of medicine.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!Finding the time to take a much needed break when staring burn out in the face can be a struggle that some may find themselves saying "I can't, because-"
But, this week, I'm talking with one of my amazing colleagues, Dr. Hisla Bates, who was able to take a sabbatical even with the additional challenge of being a single parent. She shares with us what it was like being pregnant and a parent while going through residency and struggling to make ends meet.
It took Dr. Hisla several years before she was in the position to where she was able to take a sabbatical from medicine and she found the ability to do that by investing in real estate. One of her more recent projects provided her with the ability to pay off debt and relocate.
With this newfound financial freedom, she found the ability to do locums that provided her with the ability to work on her own terms and take the time off when she wants to be present with her family. Working locums gave her the freedom to say "no" which is such a luxury when you've been faced with burnout for such a long period of time.
During her breaks, Dr. Hisla was able to get back in touch with her creative side through the act of painting which helped her discover joy in her life again. By rediscovering how important art was to her she opened the door to bringing art into her practice to help others reconnect with what spawns joy for them.
As medical professionals who are constantly on the go and connected to work, it can be so difficult to take a step back and find the time that is necessary to devote to a hobby that brings you joy but it is necessary to keep your own cup full before you can fill the cup of your family or even your patients.
By opening ourselves to opportunities, we find that we are so much more than just doctors.
"I found a lot of freedom in doing locums work and wish I had done it earlier." Dr. Hisla Bates

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!As doctors we spend our lives solving problems. But are we really solving them? Or are we masking them? Dr. Elizabeth Hughes is a dermatologist who has told more people than she can count that there was nothing they could do about their dandruff.
But was that true?
While taking a sabbatical from practice she finally got to explore that question more fully. Why is it that we can't treat dandruff at its source? We have all these serums and shampoos that are designed to deal with the flakes, but what about the cause.
After years of research, development, and sourcing, she now has a product that does just that.
Listen as she shares everything that has gone into making this product come to life. Everything from the trial and error of finding the right partners in the business, to learning how to build and grow a business rather than a practice.
Dr. Elizabeth is a brilliant dermatologist but I'm thinking that her role as an inventor will be her best one yet. You won't want to miss out on this episode if you've been asking yourself similar questions.
Why can't we fix it?
"Physicians really are unbelievably creative and we just short change ourselves." Dr. Elizabeth Hughes

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!!
If you listen to traditional money advice from gurus, they'll tell you if you have no money coming in to stop all spending. I respectfully disagree! Despite have a really low income there were some things that we continued to spend money on that were a million percent worth it. Listen in to hear my thoughts on spending money despite having a low income.
I would bet that you likely have an Amazon Prime membership. Am I right? There is a monthly cost associated with having that membership but on the flip side you get amazing prices on all the essentials. Totally worth it.
That was the key to our streaming, I had a personal shopper, and I was able to price shop on everything we were purchasing. Did I need the personal shopper? No. In fact I probably sent back 90% of the things they sent me, but I didn't have to drag three kids to the store to search the racks. That was worth it when I did in fact need some new clothes.
Was everything that I spent money on the right choice? No. And I'm sharing those decisions as well. I'm sharing it all. The good, the bad, and the ugly and why the decisions I made are the reason my businesses are now sitting on a firm foundation and I'm working for a practice I love.
It's been a tough few years, but looking back it has all been worth it. Every penny pinched and spent has gotten us to where we are today!
"You don't need to spend huge amounts of money in a huge amount of places to be successful." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[02:17] I'm talking in this episode about why I continued to spend money when we really don't have any.
[03:08] Business is hard!
[04:27] One way I spent money was continuing to pay for my Prime membership and some services they provide.
[06:33] I continued to travel even though I wasn't making much money in my business because the benefits outweighed the money.
[08:01] I also continued to pay for the people who work for me in my business.
[09:20] Listen as I discuss some of the dumb things I spent money on.
[11:01] I share some of the best things I spend money on for my family.
[12:26] Thank you for listening!

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!Sometimes you know immediately that a professional relationship simply isn't going to work. That was the case with me and my husband's accountant. This man had been doing accounting work for my husband's family for years and when we first got married, Craig and I decided to stay with him. Needless to say, that's no longer the case!
The relationship got off to a bad start from the beginning. This man never treated me the same as he did Craig despite the fact that I was the breadwinner in our household. Add in the fact that he refused to do business through email? Deal breaker!
Here's the thing, you deserve to work with people who are doing the full-assed job. This goes for anyone that you've hired no matter their role. When I realized that not only was he disrespecting me and my intelligence but he also operated his practice in a way that completely undermined my entire mission. I decided it was time.
I now have an amazing accountant who understands the online business world, understands what coaches do, and isn't afraid to do business through email. Needless to say, I am much happier with this relationship.
Need an accountant? Reach out to Dawn Patton with Patton Accounting.
"You work too hard for so-so and half-assed." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:
[02:04] My husband's accountant was stuck in his ways and wasn't interested in learning anything new.
[03:59] Here are some reasons why firing him was necessary.
[05:14] He did not understand online business at all.
[06:12] This man was also extremely burnt out and I offered him free coaching and wouldn't take it.
[07:43] I have now found an amazing accountant that specializes in online entrepreneurship.
[09:10] Set the bar high because you are like the people you surround yourself with.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!Student loan forgiveness feels like a no-brainer right? You spent all this time and money to obtain a degree that will directly impact the lives of others, why wouldn't you want to accept the loan forgiveness programs that exist to help reduce your financial burden?
For me accepting loan forgiveness the first time would have been adding another set of golden handcuffs to my wrists.
I was already heavily burned out and it was affecting my life and family. When I was approached about student loan forgiveness by our administrators, I had a gut feeling that I shouldn't accept. So I turned it down to the dismay and confusion of the entire leadership staff.
That was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I would have felt obligated to stay there and I would have drowned in an unmanageable workload. I would have never started my business. This podcast wouldn't exist. I would have been stuck.
This time around when loan forgiveness was offered, I accepted it. I have finally found my place in this industry and in the medical community and it felt right to accept.
All of this is to say that it's important to listen to your gut feelings. Both in practice and in life, your gut is a smart bitch that's looking out for you and your patients. Don't discount those feelings!
"Golden handcuffs are the things that are so shiny and so pretty but yet keep us locked into bondage." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[02:34] I share the reason I decided to decline loan forgiveness.
[04:07] "If I had signed up for loan forgiveness with that practice, it would have been another pair of golden handcuffs."
[05:08] I would have also lost my autonomy.
[05:40] I share my definition of golden handcuffs.
[07:42] I actually just applied for loan forgiveness with my new practice.
[08:09] Remember to always trust your gut.
[10:53] "We have to know that intuition is there and it's a tool we can use."
[11:32] Thank you for listening and the 4th installment will be coming your way soon.

Ep. 380 Why I Stopped Contributing to My Retirement
Ep. 379 Why I Broke Up with Dave Ramsey
3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!Money is hard. There are so many gurus out there sharing all the tips and tricks on how to make money, how to save money, how to invest money, and yet, all of our lives we're told not to talk about money. How in the world can we figure out the world of money, if we only hear one side and we never talk openly about it?
That's why I'm doing this money series. Because it's time we all started talking about it.
So, back in 2015, Mr. Weisman and I were trying to decide some life things. We were trying to figure out how to go after our goals and dreams while still taking care of our budding family and not killing ourselves in jobs we hated.
One way to do that was to take home all the money that I would have invested in my retirement account. Instead of putting that money away, we saved it all in a rainy day fund and we created a nest egg that allowed me to leave my practice.
Listen in to learn what happened next and why I have no regrets about not socking money away right now. Will I later? Maybe, but I refuse to kill myself to make money for tomorrow when my goal is to live life today!
"I have a lot of money drama." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[02:14] Here's the reason I quit contributing to my retirement.
[05:32] Mr Weisman reminded me that we are resilient people and we'd figure it all out.
[07:38] I fell in love with working in correctional medicine.
[09:19] Even if you don't follow the exact layout of the experts, it doesn't mean that you are failing at life.
[10:23] I encourage you to ask 3 questions when it comes to money.
[11:44] Look at your situation and do what's best for you.

3 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW COST!!!
Student loans are no joke. Especially when the loans you have are for medical school. (I'm sure you already know that!) But for Mr. Weisman and I being debt free has always been a huge motivator. We want to get out from under this suffocating load and free up more money to invest and give.
So why did we break up with Dave Ramsey?
When we decided to get serious about our debt free journey, we were all in. We scrimped every penny, budgeted everything down to the last cent, and spent absolutely no extra money anywhere.
We didn't eat out. We didn't go on vacation. We didn't even buy extra treats at the grocery store. We saved everything that we could so we could put it all toward paying down our debt.
And we burned out. It was a completely different type of burnout but it was a form of burnout nonetheless. We need to take a break. We needed to go on vacation. We needed the space to have a little breathing room and not stress about every penny we made and spent.
So we broke up with Dave Ramsey and continued our debt free journey, just in a different way. Listen in to hear the whole story and learn how we're conquering debt these days and when we're set to have it all paid off!
"I went into my financial life in med school with a lot of guilt and shame." Dr. Errin Weisman In this episode: [02:14] Let's talk about why I broke up with Dave Ramsey. [03:20] I had a lot of guilt and shame when I had loans for med school. [05:30] So much shame about wanting to take a vacation because I was struggling. [06:21] "It's okay to have needs now." [08:19] After residency we kicked student loan butt but I also hit burnout. [10:03] Mr. Weisman convinced me that it was ok to pause the craziness and enjoy life again. [12:23] Instead of 10 years we will actually be debt free in 13, not such a bad deal. [12:41] Thank you for listening and stay tuned for part 2.
