Tom Turcich is the 10th person to walk around the world, and he is the first to do it with a dog by his side. When he was only a few months into his journey, he adopted Savannah, a puppy at the time. It took some training, but soon enough she was walking the 24 miles a day with Tom at her side. They would go on to spend the next seven years together, going across 37 countries and making everlasting memories and a forever bond. It's an accomplishment and adventure to see the world as it is, but doing so with your best furry friend at your side makes it all the better.

To wrap up the year, this episode features highlights from 2022 guests that we had the pleasure of having conversations with on Dog Save The People. As we faced a transitional year of moving back to “normal” life, one thing that has only deepened over this time is the strong sense of connection that we have with our dogs.

Sheryl Dunleavy is the Founder of The Ann Parke Collection, an antique business focused mainly on dogs. The lineage of the items, particularly some like Staffordshire ceramic dogs, dates back all the way to the mid-1800s and can be traced to Queen Victoria. Prior to her reign, dogs had just been looked at as working animals. But Victoria, whose main childhood companion was a King Charles Spaniel named Dash, modeled a kinder, loving acceptance of her dog to society. When she became Queen, Victoria showed the public how dogs could be part of your home, your family, and that they should be treated properly. The public perception changed, spurring a dramatic shift around the domestication and artistic documentation of dogs. Today, Sheryl tries to honor Victoria's legacy – and how special it is to capture dogs through art – in her own collection of antiques.

Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist and book author Ed Yong's latest book, An Immense World, looks at the different ways animals experience the world from a sensory level. While Ed was in the midst of writing about this topic, a canine companion came into his life (for the first time ever), and gave him new insights into his work. Raising his corgi, named Typo, allowed him to reflect daily about what his own dog might be feeling, and leaned into these thoughts with curiosity and empathy which enriched his life, reinforced his book research and made him feel closer to nature, and the planet in a more profound way.

This bonus episode features a sample meditation episode, Feeling Gratitude, from a new spinoff series – Dog Walk Meditation – brought to you by the team at Dog Save The People.
This walking meditation is a way to feel a deeper and more present sense of appreciation for your dog, your life, and recognizing what you have – not what you don’t.
This seasonal series will feature short meditations specially designed for personal time spent with dogs, such as on a walk together, which may strengthen your mutual connection and improve mental well-being. The goal of the show is to release the mind from distractions, reduce stress, and focus on the present moment.
Your guide for the new show is John Bartlett, a certified meditation teacher and host of the Dog Save The People podcast. Both shows are original series produced by As It Should Be.

As a veterinary oncologist for several decades, Dr. Renée Alsaraff often treated her canine patients with cancer. But when she herself was later diagnosed with "the c-word" (as she prefers to call it), everything changed. She was forced to confront the same difficult process she was helping patients through, and this time she had her own dog at her side to help persevere. This journey inspired her new book – Sit, Stay, Heal – reflecting on the lessons she's learned in her practice and own experience over the years.
