Fashion designer Scott Sternberg is best known for his successful brand Band of Outsiders, which he founded and ran for over a decade. While he had success in that space, he felt he needed more in his personal life. Enter Zod, aka General Zod, who helped him to find a better work/life balance, get outside and slow down on their walks, and even connect with the neighbors in his community (Scott deems Zod to be the "Mayor of Silver Lake").

Kristin Ann Jones was going through a rough stretch – she was forced to retire early from a job she loved, she lost her mother, and her daughter developed health issues. But when the world was feeling overwhelming and she just wanted to avoid everything and everybody, her dog Archer was able to get her outside of her head and into the beautiful nature around them in the Pacific Northwest. He also got her to focus her attention on others, spending many hours as a therapy team together, and instilled many valuable lessons that informed Kristin's new book Everything I Know about Life, I Learned from My Dog.

Paola Hernández is a fashion designer based in New York, born and raised in Mexico City. Growing up, she did have dogs, but they were viewed separately from the main family. Through her own dog, Pancho, she has come to truly understand how much the presence of dogs in our lives can impact us creatively, maternally, and as a collective family.

As we pass the two-year mark of the pandemic, we thought it would be good to bring back one of the guests we interviewed in our office before everything shut down. You may know her great illustrations that feature dogs, but it's her journey from a fear of dogs to a special connection that makes her work even more interesting.
Maira Kalman is an Israeli-born American illustrator, writer, artist, and designer. She has written and illustrated eighteen children’s books and is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, including creating several covers for the magazine that you may have seen before. After initially being afraid of dogs from a young age, Maira eventually had a change of heart and opened up her world to dogs. She realized how much dogs have to teach us, how they’re natural comedians, and how they make us better as people.

Dr. John Pilley taught his dog Chaser over 1,000 words to become "the smartest dog in the world." His daughter, Pilley Bianchi, saw the process unfold and took away many lessons – including how her dad taught Chaser through the lens of play. A lesson that is now part of the nonprofit she founded, The Chaser Initiative, which helps educate young students about how play can be beneficial to learn and how dogs can help us with that. Robert Macpherson served in the U.S. Marines as an aid worker and career infantry officer – earning multiple awards of valor – with service in Vietnam, Iraq, and Somalia. Following that, he led humanitarian response missions worldwide for fifteen years at the humanitarian organization CARE. Returning back to everyday, regular life situations was not an easy transition. It took a while for Robert to realize he couldn't do this alone. And while he tried therapy and other methods of treatment, there was still something missing. That all changed once his service dog, Blue, came into his life. He helped Robert to go out in public again comfortably, temper his night terrors, and be in the right space to write his new book, Stewards of Humanity. Dr. Chris Blazina is a licensed psychologist and author who specializes in male psychology. He came to recognize the importance of animal companions in the lives of men, especially dogs. While the term “Man’s Best Friend” has been around for centuries, we may not be fully aware how important dogs were to many well-known historic figures. In his new book, Dr. Blazina discovered that men such as Charles Darwin or Sigmond Freud had significant bonds with their dogs that brought them peace at later times of their lives when they didn't find that in fellow humans. Grisha Stewart is a dog training expert, author, and online dog school facilitator based in Oregon, who specializes in dog reactivity and canine empowerment. She has been training dogs for two decades and counting, using empowerment and positive reinforcement to meet the needs of dogs. In 2010, she developed BAT (Behavior Adjustment Training) to find an efficient rehabilitation technique that would work with her own dog's fear issues and help gain confidence, social skills, and improve behavior overall. She has also observed over time how the ways we interact with our dogs reflect back our own behavior and how we can learn about ourselves with a deeper look at it.
