Mexico City's Zócalo hosts teams from around the globe for the 2018 Homeless World Cup. They may be struggling at the moment, but these players are getting a hand making their goals happen on and off the field. We interview Reed Fox, a program manager at Street Soccer USA and U.S. director of the Homeless World Cup, and Pedro Roberts, a player in New York. Shawn Stein, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Dickinson College, tells us about his quixotic journey to find "ficción futbolera" in Latin America. After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, Spanish-born chef José Andrés followed, by Humvee, by helicopter, by boat–whatever it took to reach people who needed to eat. He tells us how his nonprofit, World Central Kitchen, contributed to relief efforts on the island over the course of a year. And he reflects on how his friend Anthony Bourdain encouraged him to write a book about the experience. The result: We Fed an Island: The True Story of Rebuilding Puerto Rico, One Meal at a Time. José Andrés was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize this year. Plus, the Foundation for Puerto Rico's projects director, Alma Frontera, describes her group’s work on the island.
