Serious youth violence is a social emergency and the government needs to get a grip on the problem or more teenagers will die, MPs have said. A report from the home affairs select committee said there was a “serious mismatch” between the government’s diagnosis of the problem and its solutions, and its serious violence strategy lacked leadership and focus. Boris Johnson has promised to hire 20,000 police officers and has appointed a new home secretary, Priti Patel, to deliver his vision for law and order. The committee welcomed more resources for police officers but said more action was needed urgently to improve prevention and early intervention services.

This was the 1980s, when UK black culture was dominated by the Caribbean and, in particular, Jamaican identity. It concerned me that there was such an acceptance of this model of parenting; that somehow the menfolk could impregnate women and then disappear or, at best, play a minor, semi-detached role in their child’s upbringing. My childhood had given me two models of fatherhood and it was clear which was preferable. The security of having two parents in a committed relationship, all of us living under one roof, provided a solid building block for everything I did; be it schoolwork, friendships or any outside activities. I’m not some puritanical tyrant who believes that all parents must be married, or that loveless or, worse, abusive relationships must be tolerated for the sake of the children.

I believe 'Brexit' will have a negative economic impact on the UK. As for how it will effect us as Black people specifically; let us have a look at Tory austerity as a reaction to the 2008 financial crisis. Black women and children were hit the hardest. Yet, the crisis and subsequent recession were a direct result of the financial sector and collusion with the political class. Every aspect of government assistance and delivery of services was negatively impacted; from underfunding schools in poor ethnic minority areas to the closing of our youth centres or perhaps the lack of appropriate funds. Oversight and regulations and their relation to the Grenfell tower massacre is an even better example.
