Ken Starr's Favorite Book!

I laughed, I cried, I peed my pants, I rinsed and repeated! Mayageddon offers the best in political satire, science fiction, Harlequin Romance and Drudge Report rolled into one. It took a big imagination and keen understanding of what drives the characters running our nation today to pull off this story. The opening scene is absolutely brilliant and well crafted and I was a little worried that the novel would have trouble living up to it. Give Baumbach credit for the crescendo of hilarity that is Mayageddon. I will forever hope for 'Ashton Kutcher to come around the corner' when I am in a high stress situation. One merchandising thought for the book would be to sell tactical field pants with 'CYA' stitched on the buttocks. I am about to read it again!

Alternate realities with seriously dead on comic commentary

Baumbach has created a string theorist vision of one of the many possble realities in recent events . He skewers many sacred cows and does it with obvious glee. He pulls away the veneer of political, religious and corporate motivations and sheds light on baser human impulses while creating a well crafted farce that calls attention to the absurdity at the heart of it all. This novel is a great companion read with Albert Brooks 2030. All realities are possible, but some help us get through the one we find ourselves seemingly locked into. Or are we really? Decide yourself, with two endings that fit the string theorist theme to a tee.

A Satirical Funfest of Action and Intrigue!

Baumbach has written a rollicking good story. His book never stops, never pauses to let you take a breath, particularly when laughter threatens to overwhelm. Satire is hard to do, but his book is like a runaway train, steamrolling our good senses right to the cliff edge of a reality that threatens with its believability, while entertaining with its excesses.

Get this book now! It may just take the sting out of all those 2012 end of world predictions...by getting you really worried about what may really, really be coming next in this 2012 presidential election year in our really, really, really wacky world of American politics.

Exciting from start to finish

Mayageddon is a political satire and kept my attention from start to finish. The author does an amazing job at naming his characters.

When a naughty dyslexic loser offer to trade his soul to Santa, Kris Kringle sees a chance to get that special package he's been dreaming of, and it ain't a Red Ryder BB Gun......though it could put your eye out...

I WAS getting a little annoyed at St. Nick for busting on how poorly Mrs. Claus has aged when he's sporting his own bowlful-of-jelly belly, but in the end, everyone gets what they wished for, and a merry time is had by all.

Evans Light Gets a Visit from Santa

Brothers Evans and Adam Light specialize in short horror stories, but, while Adam usually has his tongue planted firmly in cheek when recounting a tale, Evans (at least in the stories I've read) takes his horror a bit more seriously. Until now, that is.

The Package is a horror story only in the broadest sense of the word, but it does have a twisted sense of humor and a wild plot. The story's protagonist is none other than Santa Claus, but not the jolly old guy who dispenses goodies on Christmas Eve. No, this Santa has fallen on hard times: he's had to lay off almost all his elves, poor Rudolph is no more, and Mrs. Claus keeps making increasingly unwelcome demands on him. But worst of all (and I guess this is the actual horror in the story), Santa is finding that his, ahem, package is actually getting smaller so he couldn't accommodate Mrs. Claus if he wanted to.

Fortunately for Santa, salvation may be at hand in the form of a letter from a dyslexic admirer who has confused Santa with Satan and offered his soul in exchange for a few wishes. Since the letter contains some unfortunate misspellings, the admirer may not get exactly what he wanted.

The story is moderately entertaining... never laugh out loud funny, but having a fair number of chuckles, and Light manages to come up with an innovative ending. However, Light is better at horror than humor, and he never quite manages to maximize the considerable comic potential in this setup. There are plenty of one liners here, but quite a few fall flat, and nothing kills the momentum of a story like awkwardly failed jokes. The end result is a decent story but nothing on the level of some of Light's other, seriously twisted imaginings.

My other caveat with this story is the usual one I have when authors post short stories on Kindle... some people may not see the value in spending a dollar for a decent 20-page story (I got the story for free so this was not an issue). Fortunately, The Package is also available as part of at least one collection by the Light brothers, so readers may be able to purchase it, along with some other horror and fantasy tales, for a price that's not much more than the price of this story by itself.

I've gone off Santa!

This story really doesn't paint Santa in a very nice light, infact he's positively glowing under a great big neon moron sign!

I found myself getting rather annoyed at Santa and the way he kept putting down poor Mrs Claus.

Being a Jerk is Comical

This book made me laugh so hard! Most of the stories are hilarious, and I couldn't get enough of it. A particular chapter had me laughing so hard, that I almost had tears in my eyes! I would have given this 5/5 stars, but I found a lot of grammatical issues in addition to typos (I'm a writer and edit my own works, so these things may stand out to me more than others). Also, I felt the last part of the novel, where the author explains the book, tips on getting published, and gives some back story about himself, a bit lengthy. Despite these cons, I highly recommend this book, especially if you enjoy off-kilter humor.

They printed the rough draft!

I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. She attends college with the author and is in a Fiction Collective with him. When she ran into him and told him she got his book for Christmas, the first words out of his mouth were, "Let me explain." It seems they printed the rough draft of his manuscript, not the final draft, so there are numerous grammatical errors in the book.

It seems that the Kindle version is the final draft version, but the printed book is not.

Great Book!

Bought the book mainly because Christopher is a great friend and I really want to see this book succeed. I was really busy and the time it came out but when i finally sat down to read it i was amazed. I enjoyed every page and can't wait for the next one to come out.

the jerk

All about people who boarder on sociopathic behavior. After two "tales" deleted it from my device. Not at all funny

awesome book

i bought this book just because i knew the kid from school and thought it was cool that he got published, not thinking much about it. But after reading i was very impressed. the style of the book is refreshing and easy to read. i greatly enjoyed it and finished it quite quickly as i could not set it down. Buy this book and you will not be dissapointed!

it took a while to warm up, but once it got going the characters were totally loveable :)

Longing for Love in an Ice Storm and Living Warmly Ever After

First of all, the book is !!!beautiful!!!. Its cover is one of the most beautiful book jackets I have seen, front and back, and the deckle edge lend a true book flavor to the volume. It's definitely a book that says: Kindle, I am the *real* thing.

The story has the feel of the extravert's Land of Decoration, the book by Grace McCleen about an introverted girl who has the power, or so she thinks, to make it snow. Here, a boy asks the sky to intervene and everything ices over in the great Montreal ice storm of 1998. It's a fantastic bit of history to learn about as we gripe about the current ice storm of 2012 in Toronto, which seems like a pale wannabe of a past storm which deprived a million people of power. So that's a great setting for a motley crew of characters colorfully assembled and depicted: a stripper with three cats, a Russian mathematician and his fish, the occasionally first-person boy narrator whose parents announce their divorce, breaking his heart and spurring him on to call down the ice, a gay couple who teach a surly prejudiced dad to like them and to love again...Cue the gradual thawing of hearts to the communal perils of thickening ice. By now, it is clear that Szalowski intends the narrative to be a feel-good movie with an ensemble cast you can have fun conjuring up in your mind. Will Jennifer Lawrence be the stripper and Liam Neeson the estranged father? :)

So the book is a delightful foray into the realm of wishful thinking (some call it magical realism, if you will) with memorable still shots of people clutching or fumbling for each other, as people do when shocked by icy weather into gathering and coping in spite of their differences. Like a Hollywood movie, this likeable narrative of transformations feels, in the end, sweetly pat. Just the same, if you are looking for a book that affirms human and communal spirit against all odds, this one pleases like a hot cup of chocolat on a cold winter's night.A delightful and untaxing experience as you lean back in your armchair, taking electricity for granted.

And did I mention the !!!gorgeous!!! book jacket?

I stopped reading this book 93% of the way

The story begins with promise but nosedives at the end with its plethora of happy endings. The only thing that could have made it worse was "âand then I woke up. It was all a dream"

This has nothing to do with superstitions. Not even much of a story. Best suggestion: don't waste your time with this one. Especially if you are a Christian.
