Kids need heroes...

I entertain my minivan-bound children with books on tape/CD. The best are the Harry Potter series. There are many other good ones. And this is a good non-fiction title for children.

Kids need heroes, and this tape provides my 5 and 7 year old boys with some impressive ones. The heroes come from the worlds of politics, science, literature, religion... This tape is one of my 7 year old son's favorites. It has a very positive message for him. He gets ideas of what he could be.

Volume 2 (the one I have) tells the stories of some historical figures, emphasizing all the positive and heroic qualities of each: Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Washington.

As an adult accustomed to having his heroes routinely discredited, I find these idealized portraits naive, but kind of refreshing. If you have kids you know that they have a purpose: to introduce you to the world again, and show you its wonder. These portraits of heroes are simplified and abstracted in a way that highlights their abilities. No jaded cynicism here. These scientists, thinkers, statesmen, musicians, were all leaders. My young leader could do worse than to select a role model from one of these larger than life heroes.

Two other notes.

1. The tapes are abridged, while the CDs are not. Buy the CD.

2. Amazon has one description for both volume 1 and 2. Misleading. They contain different people.

Naxos Junior Classics: More Tales from the Greek Legends

Over the years my family purchased more than thirty of the Naxos Junior Classics. The discs were wonderful to listen to on the way to school and other long car rides. Both the kids and the adults in my family loved the Naxos stories and we learned so much over the years.

More Tales from the Greek Legends is one of our favorite titles. My boys loved these stories and listened to them many times. They are read by Benjamin Soames, our favorite Naxos narrator. He does a fantastic job of bringing these tales to life.

Any Greek legend will naturally contain fighting and monsters. We found the content to be appropriate for our children, and we appreciated our boys getting a head start on the classics. If you enjoy these legends, I highly recommend the first volume of Tales from the Greek Legends, as well as the Tale of Troy and Adventures of Odysseus, all read by Benjamin Soames.

My family truly enjoyed the Naxos audio collection and I hope your family will, too!

The author will cast a spell on the reader that who will not stop reading until the end and in the end wants to start over-The spell of Syssipus, so be careful!

More Tales From the Greek Legends

My eight year old daughter loves these stories and has collected the whole set. She is now quite an authority on Greek legends and listening to them has increased her vocabulary enormously. They are well presented and very entertaining. Great for a long journey.

Saves a lot of talking about the myths

I have taught Mythology for 30 years, and I am tired of talking. This series is great relief for my aching jaws. The kids love the dramatic music, also.

A fun mystery for kids.

This was a fun and quick read. I listened to it with my 6 year old and he loved it.

Maisy loves the old black and white detective movies and loves nothing better than solving mysteries like her favourite detectives. When her school mascots goes missing, Maisy goes into detective mode to find them.

As I said, my 6 year old son really enjoyed this. He thought Maisy was brave and smart and had a lot of fun trying to see who was the culprit. Myself, I thought Maisy is a worthy heroine. I loved how when she goes into detective mode, she sees the world as black and white and when she gets close to solving it, the colour starts to seep back in. It was a unique and interesting addition to Maisy.

The plot is fast paced and even though it's a very short listen, it was a well fleshed out and entertaining read. The author did a great job of building the suspense and clues and creating a lovable heroine.

In all, a great listen for your child. It captures their attention and makes them eager to read the whole book.

Initially, I found it odd to listen to Reba Buhr because she sounded like a chipmunk, very high pitched and fast, but I quickly saw that my son must have accidentally sped up the speed because it was at 2.5 times the normal!! Once I slowed it down a bit, the narrator became a little more easier to listen to, though I still found her to use too high a pitch for Maisy. It felt a little forced!

Really Fun Kids' Mystery

Maisy and the Missing Mice was a fun mystery for the younger set. I have to say, I enjoyed it as well. The story was well written and it was fun to guess 'whodunit'. I thought the narrator did a nice job.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the way this book is old-fashioned and clean, yet still appeals to modern kids. It is obvious that the author knows and enjoys many fourth graders on a regular basis. The mystery was intriguing even to me, and I found myself thinking and trying to solve the mystery before Maisy did! My favorite thing about the book was that while Maisy is on a case, she sees the world in black and white like in old detective movies. I just love that!

Great Book for all children

I bought this for my granddaughter as well as a giraffe seen on the cover. She is the third girl In a family of three girls. As as the book states I would know you anywhere. I would know her because she is unique and totally different from her sisters. She is the dancing animal in the story or the gleam in an eye, she is her own person. I enjoyed reading this to her and she enjoyed the story.

It is a fabulous book for any child. I recommend it for all children and families.
