Love the humor of the book. Wonder if kids would get all of it, but I did and laughed out loud many times. Kids would like the time travel and how the kids were seen as heroes and problem solvers.

way cool book with big pictures and good facts. fun to read as an adult or with your child. nice price and others in series make this a sure hit with all readers.

My view of the Lives of the Scientists

This book is beautifully illustrated and the stories are beautifully told. I think it's very appealing to children and would make a great gift.

My Grandson loves this book!

For an older and more discerning age level.

Borrowed from the library for my 7 year old to read about Louis Pasteur (which was a good one). I read the rest of the book to see if I could use any of the other biographies in the future. There are other biographies in here that are worthwhile, however, the inclusion of the following does not stick to my personal morals:

GALILEO, whom we are to admire as a scientist, called his mother an idiot, and was verbally abusive (to a severe degree) to most everyone around him.

DARWIN wrote that "a wife was better than a dog anyhow".

Including unproven rumors (as already brought out by other reviewers) cheapens the validity of the entire book (especially since it has nothing to do with Carver's accomplishments).

MARIE CURIE was humiliated by her love letters to a married man (okay, not cool, but then...) to which her friend Einstein played consoling friend to her face but condescending of her behind her back. Either to be admired?

EINSTEIN's girlfriend had a baby out of wedlock, he treated his wife like a servant while beginning an affair with his cousin.

The person who drew up the first sketches of the DNA strand usually drew nudes.

JAMES WATSON "arranged for a bikini-clad woman named Fifi to jump out of the cake" at FRANCIS CRICK's 50th birthday party.

I would not purchase this for a 10 year old. Perhaps a person in high school who has more discernment, but do I really want my 7 year old (who can read at this level) to ask why women are treated poorly by scientific heroes, or my 10 year old to think that it is just fine to be a back-stabbing friend because a renowned scientist was?

Yes, humanizing those who have made fantastic advancements in science is a wonderful way to encourage children to participate in science, but let's be discerning about how much to include, especially in the impressionable years.

I had to come back and add that Krull and Hewitt's writing styles are superb, and quite engaging. The illustrations are delightful and worthy of framing.

Amazing story

I think that this is an amazing story and that Sarah Pennypacker did a great job writing it.

A Quirky book about two girls about 12 years old

Would you consider the audio edition of Summer of the Gypsy Moths to be better than the print version?

This is an unusual book with some unexpected moments. The two girls are living with one of the girls' aunts -- one is a foster child, and the other finds out her aunt has been collecting foster parent money for her as well. The aunt dies, the girls discover her, and this is where the unexpected part begins. As you read it, you want to tell the characters what to do, because you think they're making some weird choices.

Which character as performed by Jenna Lamia was your favorite?

Both characters are really interesting and unusual.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The development of both characters was well done by the author. Both grow and change.

Any additional comments?

For a student who has experienced a recent death in the family, this would probably not be a good choice.

Good and sad

A good story with some very odd twists. Read the synopsis before trying this book, the subject matter may be difficult to handle.

I think the narrator was very good. This made for an interesting listen. I'm hoping Stella and George have a sequel. I want to hear how many fun things they do.

I love Lloyd Alexander's writing. It was hard to get into this one.

A great adventure for all ages.

A great book of values from my favorite author for youth and children's books. A lot of moral analogies and metaphors can be found in this and all of Lloyd Alexander's books.

Loved it!

A huge fan of Alexander's Prydain stories, I was deeply impressed by the Kestrel series as well. Just when I thought my top ten favorite books were set in stone, I read this delightfully profound archetypal adventure filled with vibrant, colorful characters whose seemingly insurmountable challenges wend through exciting, unpredictable yet insightful resolutions. A great read to curl up to at the end of the day!

Couldn't Stop Listening

This is a great adventure novel to listen too if your on the bus or drawing or just hanging out. It's very interesting and ends with the BIGEST plot twist I've ever I countered. You really don't see it coming (and when you think you know, you don't!) is recommended this book to anyone who likes adventures and surprises. :)

Great story, dreadful narrator

The story is gorgeous, but I'd recommend buying the book. The narrator was hands down the worst I've ever heard, putting on an atrociously overdone English accent (pronouncing Otto as Auto and atlas as artlars). Her performance was stilted, droning, and overall terrible.

I like it

it was Lucia who was portrayed as the author. It couldn't be Otto because they don't know where he is at one point or what he is thinking about their mum and it couldn't be max because he doesn't reveal what he discovered about snoring by the sea on the roof until much later and Lucia was the only one who's thoughts were shown throughout the entire book. so yah.

Magical adventure for all ages.

Outstanding! The story was really a lot of fun. There was a lot of different creatures that I had never heard of. It is a great story for teachers to use to illustrate that a physical deficit can be overcome. The main character Matilda has significant hearing loss. She overcame a lot to keep the little ones in her care safe.

The narration was excellent!

different in a good way

I loved this book from start to finish. while it held all the elements of classic fairytales, the social ramifications are all modern. what IS in a name? The children from the mantle in Whipplethorn Manor face the direst dangers and, despite each having gifts they are ashamed of, and some handicaps, they overcome huge obstacles as a team. loved it!

My favorite book as a child

I ordered this book off the school scholastic papers in 6th grade back in 1987. I was so fascinated with the story. It is a story that has always stayed with me. What a joy this was to hear it read to me after all these years. It is still as wonderful of a story now at age 40 as it was to me at age 11. Highly recommend!

Bittersweet story

Beautiful reading of a bittersweet timeslip story. As Charlotte sleeps she slips out of her own time and changes places with Clare in 1918. The story builds slowly but Charlotte's plight starts to grip as 1918 begins to become more real to her than her own life and she fights to remain herself. Very well read by Hannah Gordon with nicely done character voices.

Beautiful book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - I'd recommend it to almost everyone with imagination and heart! It;s a beautiful touching story with lovely vivid characters that stay with you and feel like friends. A lot of mystery too, and the parts about the First World War are quite powerful and moving.

The main character Charlotte, and Emily. And also Miss Agnes touched me.

All the above main characters! Hannah Gordon brought them to life perfectly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several moments really - but can't say without spoilers. The end was moving, but in a good way.

A truly lovely clever book, perfectly written, for all ages above about 12, I'd say. I'm 60 years old and read it for the first time, and was captivated.

This book is one of my favourite books on audible and I love the story, there are a few parts that didn't really make sense to me but it's still amazing! I would recommend this book to all ages as there is no inappropriate-ness (or very little) and the story is good for children and adults!!! Five Stars!!!!

A survival story for the ages

This is one of the most action packed books I have read in awhile. The lessons I learned from Nick, are ones I will remember for most of my life. Nickâs suspenseful journey is memorable as he navigates his way through the harsh weathered, dangerous Canadian arctic. It has strong emotions to highlight important moments, descriptive language to illustrate horrid and beautiful creatures, and lessons about having to make decisions that will have an impact on your life forever. In the end, we learn more about accepting things than anything else.

The story takes place in 2014, in the Northwest Territories. Where Nick and his brother are river rafting when disaster strikes. The boat hits a block of ice and the boat is flipped over. They both barely escape with their lives. They are separated, both facing deadly encounters with the River and horrible creatures. All of this time though, Nickâs grandfather is dying and he is trying to get back to him.

The book makes you feel. Will Hobbs makes me feel like I could almost feel same amount of amazement as Nick. in the text it says, âTo be this close to this white wolf-standing so tall on its legs, with the wind rustling its fur, its curious eyes still taking me in-kind of shook me to the core. This was the most magnificent animal I had seen in my life.â (Pg. 92). The book makes me picture the wolf in the wind, looking at me.

The writing is vivid â Iâm transported to another time and place. Will Hobbs describes everything so well, I feel as though I too am being attacked by a Grolar Bear. The text says, "The impact felt like Iâd been hit by a tumbling boulder. My rifle went flying as I went to the ground. I felt the claws rake my shoulder as the bear tore the pack from my back. I knew I had to get to the boat, and fast, but I couldnât move. I couldnât even breathe." (Pg. 3). This part is so well described, it feels to me that I could almost picture the attack from any angle and still get the same amount of information.

The characters feel real, alive, and unique. I feel almost as if Nick goes to my school and that I know him well, so well that I could almost predict his next move. "Donât give up, you have to find him. Maybe he blacked out and heâs still in the water. If so, you have to pull him out fast. I scanned and scanned and saw nothing.â (Pg.70). I had a feeling that Nick would think this because I know that the motto of his town is âNever Say Dieâ and that he believed in that deeply.

Through all of this, Nick copes with losing his biggest role model. We learn that sometimes you need to take a gamble and do something that might change your life forever.
