Another great Boxcar Children book!

These books have become a favorite in our house! I read them to my daughter and look forward to when she can read them on her own. If you have a child interested in ancient Egypt this is a good choice.

Almost as good as the last!

The book was well written with all the buzz words for the pre-tween age group. I would recommend it for reading an afternoon book together. Too many laughs keep the littles ones up past bedtime!!

Beck's two books about Malcolm are among the best children's stories I have read

Ms. Beck's two books about Malcolm are among the best children's stories I have read. They remind me a bit of Wind in the Willows as played out in a grade school with a small Rat in the lead, rather than a wayward Toad. The focus includes mystery, humor, adventure, problems, mishaps, and some fascinating kindnesses shown in unexpected ways.

We love the two stories that are part of a whole biography about Malcolm, who is very gifted. You and your children will enjoy both books greatly.

Engaging mystery for elementary age children and up

My 11-year-old daughter read this as part of a battle of the books competition. She really enjoyed the story and characters, and we have checked out several other "Malcolm" books from the library. This is a mystery story that is engaging for young readers and would be appropriate for children a couple of years younger than my daughter as well.

Malcolm is Magical

Malcolm at Midnight is a tale filled with characters you love and a couple you "love to dislike", and an adorable rat that you root for through the entire story. Ms. Beck has created a fun secret society of classroom pets that run the school behind the scenes. The lessons of personal responsibility and not judging a book by its cover are great for all ages - but the target audience of middle range readers will truly benefit. I found myself visualizing this book in movie form. I hope to see these colorful characters again soon!

Emerald Star book review!!!

This book is excellent and has great imagery. It puts you on a rollercoaster of emotions. If you have difficulties with handling troubling family issues and death then maybe don't read. Remember to read Little Stars! Not a wide variety of voices and could be found a bit boring. On the other hand it is excellent and has a interesting plot. I seriously recommend this book and hope you have fun listening!

this series is one of my favorites because it has kept my daughter enthralled for weeks now!

Enjoyable book for preschool age

We just finished reading this to our kids, one is in preschool and the other one is in kindergarten. They both enjoyed following along with the mystery and solving it. It was an enjoyable read.

needs a better ending

Love all the boxcar children's books, however it was a bad ending. It just stopped, In the middle of the idea. :-/

Agatha Christie in a Harry Potter World

Oona Crate is a natural magician and the magician's apprentice, living in Dark Street, a divorced part of the land of Faerie. The magician, her uncle is the guardian of the gate between the land of Faerie and the real world. But what happens if a lot of dresses gets stolen from the boutique in Dark Street and culminates in the abduction or maybe murder of her uncle through magical means?

Oona, who have just relinquished her position as the magician's apprentice, are given a chance to solve the mystery in true Agatha Christie style. Oona gets a chance to be a real detective.

Shawn Thomas Odyssey applies the old recipe of a murder mystery to the fantasy drama. In the end the question is if you as listener can figure out who is the criminal. It is almost as if you are playing Cluedo using Audible. The surprises in the end are few, but the idea is intriguing. Furthermore, it must be said that the book probably has a adolescent reader and listenership in the eye.

Shawn Thomas Odyssey does a marvellous job when reading his book.

If you have read all your Agatha Christie mysteries and yearns for more, don't fear Oona Crate is here!

Great story, great entertainment.

Our protagonist, Oona Crate, is smart but troubled by tragedies in her past. She has clever helpers, a crow who carries all the world's knowledge in it's scattered brain, and an elf.

She lives on the border between our world and fairyland. She has a dilemma to face - to go on developing her talents as a wizard or become a detective which she dearly desires.

This is the story of how circumstances force her to face her fears and move forward. A wonderful growing up story, told charmingly.

The story is fresh, original, and convoluted enough to make it a satisfying mystery.

A fun read, entertaining and for all ages

Although the intended audience for this book is for the YA market I found it a fun read, entertaining and interesting enough to hold my attention from start to finish and I'm in my early 60's

Oona is an incredibly likeable and well rounded character, as is Deacon her enchanted raven sidekick, some of the other characters are less rounded however and whilst it does not spoil the overall story it would help flesh out this fantasy world if some of the other characters had a bit more depth behind them.
