Quintus Horatius Flaccus was born on December 8, 65 BC in the southeastern region of Hellenized Italy. He died on November 27, 8 BC. Horace was the son of a freedman of modest means. In the civil war between Antony and Octavian, he threw in his lot with Antony and fled along with the rest upon their defeat at Phillipi in 42 BC. His subsequent discovery by Maecenas and eventual rehabilitation with the Augustan regime was one of history's most fortunate reconciliations.

My New Favorite

Fell in love with this story of overcoming oneself. Wonderfully rich characters. The narration was good enough to follow and hold my attention. This was a perfect choice for a long car trip. Would be great for occasion really.

I had never read this classic and find audio books a great way to take them in. This performance was outstanding. The story makes use of dialects and I don't think I could have done it justice -- or maybe even had the patience -- if I were reading the printed book. The narrator was outstanding and the story was very sweet.

Le metamorfosi o L'asino d'oro (Asinus aureus), è un'opera di Lucio Apuleio, del II secolo d. CE' l'unico romanzo antico latino pervenuto interamente ad oggi. Nel 158 l'autore fu processato per magia,e nel suo discorso difensivo egli non citò quest'opera , che pure tratta di magia, di qui si deduce che l'opera sia successiva a quella data. Il libro è costituito da un soggetto principale, Lucio, e della sua metamorfosi in un asino a seguito di un esperimento non andato a buon fine. È questo l'episodio-chiave del romanzo, che muove il resto dell'intreccio: il secondo livello narrativo è costituito dalle peripezie dell'asino che, nell'attesa di riassumere le sembianze umane, si vede passare di mano in mano, mantenendo però raziocinio umano e riportando le sue molteplici disavventure. Una di queste digressioni, la favola di Amore e Psiche, costituisce un piano narrativo a sé. Per tutto il romanzo si alternano vari generi letterari, l'epico, il tragico, il comico, tenuti insieme dal fil rouge delle riflessioni dell'asino che sono un vero e proprio percorso di conoscenza. Del resto, il tema della metamorfosi è ricorrente, in letteratura, e l'Asino d'oro ne è uno dei primi esempi. Il testo letto è stato tradotto da Felice Martini, per Formiggini Editore, 1927.

Good yet long

Fascinating detail but one must listen very intently. Vocabulary is hard to understand as much of it is foreign, but you can catch on IF you listen well. GREAT moral and for this I rate it 4stars. But the story kept going and going and going and for this I gave it a 3.

Great light read!

Entertaining the whole way through! I was hoping for more in the series; then I realized the author was from the 1800's!

Il vecchio filosofo imprigionato ingiustamente e condannato a morte, rifiuta il piano di evasione che l'amico gli offre, disquisendo sui suoi principi e i suoi comportamenti, la sua moralità ineccepibile, e sul valore, per lui fondamentale, della coerenza.

Socrate continua a filosofare in modo lucido anche prima di morire, la sua straordinaria tesi sulla non violenza, sarà d'ispirazione per le civiltà che verranno, e così è ancora.
