Release date: 12-16-14

Publisher's Summary:

As a boy, every Christmas Eve, my Scottish father, Big Don, introduced my brothers, sister and I to the spirit of Santa Claus by reading aloud "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". Inspired by this wonderous experience as a child, I have continued this family tradition by reading it to my own lovely children. I am forever grateful to Big Don for sharing his incredible gift for storytelling and hope that in some small way I may inspire your children to awaken their belief in Santa through my reading of this classic Christmas poem, written in 1822. Happy Christmas to you all!

this reminds me of Christmas when I was a kid

Would you consider the audio edition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to be better than the print version?

Absolutely! this version is 1000% better!

What other book might you compare 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to and why?

Christmas Carol, because it was released at the same time.

Have you listened to any of Chris Hendries other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, all of them. This is my favorite though.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night, HO HO HO!

A Classic

The narrator's voice is warm and cozy. I've enjoyed reading this poem for years. I bought this for my kids to listen to alongside a illustrated book we own.

Title: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

Author: Lewis Carroll

Narrator: Jen Rhodes

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 31 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-21-14

Publisher: A.R.N. Publications

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 65 votes

Genres: Classics, Kids & Young Adults

Publisher's Summary:

Two all-time classic stories brought together in a single book, written by English author Lewis Carroll. Alices Adventures in Wonderland, commonly referred to as Alice in Wonderland is a tale of a young girl who falls down a large rabbit hole and finds herself in a fantasy world filled with every kind of creature imaginable including the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar and the King of Hearts!

Through the Looking Glass follows a similar tale as Alice enters another world of fantasy as she climbs through a mirror which she can see more than her reflection. Some of the more popular characters from this book include Humpty Dumpty, Bandersnatch, and the Red King.

Members Reviews:

Excellent Rendition!

If you could sum up Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in three words, what would they be?

Jen Rhodes delivered this book with an intention to completely leave the listeners captivated to this eventful story. The characters were crafted uniquely and Rhodes made each one of them shine in their roles. The adventures, suspense and climax are magical. A classic story that goes by in a flash! A must listen!

Wonderful Narrative!

If you could sum up Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in three words, what would they be?

I would say that it's a kooky, dreamlike state of a novel that helps enrich and encourage your own creativity as you imagine the scenes that Carroll describes.

What other book might you compare Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass to and why?

It may seem bizarre, but I would almost compare it to some of the Greek mythology simply because of the craziness behind the characters and situation. While Alice's story is much more light hearted (most of the time) it possesses the same extremely creative creatures and landscape.

What about Jen Rhodess performance did you like?

She's an extremely talented narrator who adds depth and personality to each character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I didn't really find it to be a moving story. It was more entertaining and almost comical.

Any additional comments?

While I grew up hearing the story of Alice in Wonderland, I realized in college that I had never actually read the entire book and that there were multiple sections that had been completely left out of the versions Id heard. So Id placed it on my To Read list for some future date. Unfortunately with a toddler son, its practically impossible to find time to sit down and read.

A friend of mine recommended this version to me. I was able to listen to the full story of Alice Through the Looking Glass while still taking care of my son. And I was not disappointed. There were so many parts that I had no idea existed!

The quality is fantastic and the narrator is clear toned, easy to understand, and throws in her own charming personality into the characters. I very much enjoyed this audio version of the story and highly recommend it.

Narration was a perfect fit!!

Jen Rhodes' reading stirs up the very emotions in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that were so powerful the first I heard this story as a child. Each character in the beloved book has a unique voice and personality, making it extremely easy to recognize who is "speaking" at that moment.

Title: Pagan Passions

Author: Randall Garrett, Larry M. Harris

Narrator: Larry Oliver

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-26-14

Publisher: Spoken Realms

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman

Publisher's Summary:

Forced to make love to beautiful women, this is adult science fiction at its best. The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greece and Rome had returned to Earth - with all their awesome powers intact, and Earth was transformed almost overnight. War on any scale was outlawed, along with boom-and-bust economic cycles, and prudery - no change was more startling than the face of New York, where, for instance, the Empire State Building became the Tower of Zeus!

In this totally altered world, William Forrester was an acolyte of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, and therefore a teacher, in this case of a totally altered history - and Maya Wilson, girl student, evidently had a totally altered way of grading in mind - but what else would a worshipper of Venus, Goddess of Love, have in mind? This was just the first of the many Trials of Forrester, every bit as mighty and perilous as the Labors of Hercules. In love with Gerda Symes, like him a devotee of Athena, like him a frequenter of the great Temple of Pallas Athena (formerly known as the 42nd Street Library) - dedicated, in short, to the pleasures of the mind - Forrester was under the soft, compelling pressure of soft, compelling devotees of Venus, Bacchus and the like, and in need of all the strength that he and his Goddess, the beautiful and intellectual Athena, could muster to save him from the endless temptations of this new Earth. And into this sensuous strife strode Temple Myrmidons - religious cops sworn to obey orders without question or hesitation - with a pickup order for William Forrester.Where he was taken, what happened to him, the truly fantastic discoveries he made about himself and the Gods and Goddesses - here are the ingredients that make up this science fiction novel of suspense, intrigue, mystery and danger. For science fiction it is, with the supernatural making complete sense, and fun too, despite the Sword of Damocles hanging by a thread over Forrester's head!

BUT THERE WASN'T ANYTIME FOR THINKING

YOU'LL DO

This is pure fantasy and for 1959 was a pure sex fantasy for the authors. The sex is not explicit just often and with perfect women. The Gods left man to himself and man screwed it up, so the Gods came back to take control. The star of the show is a mortal, who is picked to become a semi-god. For me it was just a little silly and I have loved a lot of books, that others call sophomoric.

Piers Anthony has a series of books, that are on a similar theme, that I recommend. ON A PALE HORSE, is a good book along with the two that follow it.

Return of The GODS speculative-fiction romp:

What did you like best about this story?

The wide ranging changes brought about by the return of the classical gods, the collision of modern thinking and religious facts, the fun and confusion from all the what-if.

What about Larry Olivers performance did you like?

The wry sense of humor that he conveyed for certain scenes. When the protagonist was bewildered and confused by turns of events, you could almost _feel_ the character floundering and then regaining his mental feet.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I enjoyed listening to this in segments, like it was a serialized radio play.
