    Riepilogo Editore:

An extraordinary detective story, where the guilty does not know he is. An unprecedented enquiry in which murderer and investigator are the same person. Responsible for the foulest crimes, and yet innocent, Oedipus is victim and author of the overcoming Fate, in a deadly plot that only the Gods could conceive. Sophocles' masterpiece is back in a translation coming from afar, boosted by a soundtrack of the present day.

There was a purpose in what happened to Johnny Tremain, but he couldnt see it at the time. His skills had even been admired by Paul Revere, the finest silversmith in Boston. But when Johnny seriously burns his hand in a furnace, he finds himself crippled, without an occupation, and with no means of taking care of himself. It seems that fate has literally dealt him a cruel hand. Soon, trouble reaches Johnny's life in a new way. Swept along in the tide of events leading to the Boston Tea Party and the first skirmishes of Lexington and Concord, Johnny finds a job as message-carrier for the Sons of Liberty. Publisher: Rapid Traffic Press

    Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman
    Publisher's Summary:
Aristotle's assertion that in Greek tragedy, there is no loftier work than Oedipus the King cannot be lightly contradicted. This drama is endued fearfully with nature, as she works against the conscientiousness of measure found in man. Heretofore no translation of this play has been a poem of Sophoclean worthiness and work. The rhythmic stature of this translation runs with the Greek in heat and light. "It is always gratifying, it elevates the human spirit to see one our fellows...set his aim unbelievably high and incredibly hit the mark!" (David Madgalene, bilingual author of I Hear A Journeyman Singing and many other books of verse.)

Oedipus a twisted story of murder and incest
Would you consider the audio edition of Oedipus the King to be better than the print version?
Yes, I enjoy hearing a play more then reading about it. I can also listen and do work.
What other book might you compare Oedipus the King to and why?
Romeo and Juliet. It reads like a Shakespearean play, and is a tragedy.
What does Alex Hyde-White bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The tone and in flexion in his voice adds to the experience.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Moved me into an angry place maybe. Oedipus the king is the tale of a man who murdered his father and married his own mother, unknowingly to him. I felt my stomach turn, I would be ill if I killed one of my parents and ended up marrying the other parent.
    A great translation of Oedipus
Would you consider the audio edition of Oedipus the King to be better than the print version?
The audiobook did allow me to absorb the story better than the print version.
What did you like best about this story?
It was a great translation of the classic greek tragedy.
    Any additional comments?
I can see why Oedipus has stood the test of time since 429 BCE. I highly recommend this audiobook to students who need to understand quickly. It's quite a daunting read but the audiobook makes it much more easier. And I highly recommend to those who simply want to dip their minds into ancient greek literature or want to understand a classical example of greek tragedy. The story's message is quite clear: Oedipus's own faults contribute to his downfall. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable and clear reading.
    Listen to it many times
What made the experience of listening to Oedipus the King the most enjoyable?
The more I heard it the more I understood it. The first time was difficult. The third tiem, a few days later, was very moving.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tiresia. He tells the truth to Oedipus and is abused for it.
What does Alex Hyde-White bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
In the second half he is truly an actor for Greek tragedy and the horror of it allo.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It may be too overwhelming for one sitting.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman
    Publisher's Summary:
Patrick Hunt's Myths for All Time presents twelve of the most timeless Greek myths retold in an affable, succinct fashion. These twelve myths, which have survived through the millennia, are made applicable today through Hunt's emphasis on the overriding message of each story. With foundations in ancient Greek scholarship, society, and philosophy, these stories have grown and taken new forms and thus remain relevant. Retelling twelve of the most well-known myths in his relaxed style, Hunt vividly portrays ancient Greece with characters whose basic human characteristics are not far off from our own, thus bringing new life to the greatest stories of antiquity for readers of all ages. Some of this book was shared in presentations at the Sun Valley Writers' Conference in 2005.
Patrick Hunt is a life-long student of Greek mythology, a subject that has fascinated him since his youth, and has focused his professional life on a study of the very lands that serve as the backdrop for these timeless myths. Since his time in Greece as a graduate student at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, Hunt has gone on to become a leader in the field of alpine archaeology. His broad studies and interests have, however, constantly brought him back to the myths that started it all. Hunt has taught Greek Mythology for years at Stanford University and has lived in Greece. These experiences are reflected in this book in his retelling of the myths and in notes on their historical background.

    Title: Memorial
Subtitle: A Version of Homer's Iliad
Author: Alice Oswald, Eavan Boland (afterword)
    Narrator: Mark Ashby
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-27-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman
    Publisher's Summary:
"Matthew Arnold praised the Iliad for its "nobility", as has everyone ever since - but ancient critics praised it for its enargeia, its "bright unbearable reality" (the word used when gods come to earth, not in disguise but as themselves). To retrieve the poem's energy, Alice Oswald has stripped away its story, and her account focuses by turns on Homer's extended similes and on the brief 'biographies' of the minor war-dead, most of whom are little more than names, but each of whom lives and dies unforgettably - and unforgotten - in the copiousness of Homer's glance.
"The Iliad is an oral poem. This translation presents it as an attempt - in the aftermath of the Trojan War - to remember people's names and lives without the use of writing. I hope it will have its own coherence as a series of memories and similes laid side by side: an antiphonal account of man in his world... compatible with the spirit of oral poetry, which was never stable but always adapting itself to a new audience, as if its language, unlike written language, was still alive and kicking".
    Alice Oswald
    Members Reviews:
    Beautiful poetry
The text is beautiful and moving. The narration is excruciating. He ends every line with a rising intonation that drove me absolutely crazy. It's such a shame -- I feel like this is an ideal work to be experienced aurally!
    I Tried. Really, I Did.
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
It's a great idea: the lost names of real human beings that Greece and Troy saw fit to sacrifice to an immortality for others who had a lot already but wanted more. I tried several times to get through this but couldn't put it all together. In fact, my insistence on trying several times to make heads or tails only resulted in futility. I have to admit that I never got to the end but that I sure tried. I was expecting some type of intimacy with common folk barricaded inside the walls or dying beneath the sun.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Modern Greek language or George RR Martin
Would you be willing to try another one of Mark Ashbys performances?
I have no reason to remember his name, so perhaps by chance I will stumble across him again, for better or worse.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Eternal frustration. I can't quite claim my anger and sadness are the author's fault; ay, the world is far too imminently catastrophic. This poem was a great idea, so I'll go with disappointment. Coupled with my city's traffic, this audiobook just made my ADD worse.

Title: The Trachinian Tragedy: Women of Trachis
    Author: Sophocles
    Narrator: Jack Nolan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-23-13
    Publisher: Rapid Traffic Press
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Trachinian Tragedy, better known as the Women of Trachis, the wife of Herakles, Deianeira, finds she has a rival in the house for her husband's affection. The consequences of her counteraction are incredible. In this faithful translation, F. L. Light attempts to write as good a play in English as the original in Greek. F. L. Light has also translated Antigone of Sophocles.
    Critic Reviews:
"It is always gratifying, it elevates the human spirit to see one our fellows...set his aim unbelievably high and incredibly hit the mark!" (David Madgalene, bilingual author of I Hear A Journeyman Singing)
"Light has blended very well the traditions of Shakespeare, Homer, and the English language sonnet, without erring on the side of pretense. The language is high, direct, and modern. I'm thrilled with these." (Zachary Bos, editor of Sixty Six: The Journal of Sonnet Studies)
    Members Reviews:
    Terrible audio quality.
The audio quality is terrible, like it was recorded on a laptop in someone's bathroom. Okay, that was just glib, but it's forcing me to use at least 20 words in this review.
    A Great Narration
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this rendition of the play. The narrator was clear in his speaking and of who he was speaking for, as he would both announce and change the tone of his voice to fit whichever person was communicating at the time. I heard a great passion for the play in the narrator's voice and particularly appreciated his portrayal of Herakles while he lay in pain from the centaur's poison. There was emotion that livened the characters more than what would have been gotten simply from reading their conversations.
    Fantastic Translation and Performance!
I thought this was a really good translation of Sophocles's play, and the narration was great as well. The narrator says the character's name before he says the character's lines, though I can still hear a bit of voice variation between the characters as well. (and since there was just one person performing the entire drama, I thought that was very impressive!) The performer's voice is also very clear, which made listening to this audio book enjoyable. This is a great translation and performance of a play, and I'm glad I found this because I don't see plays on audible as much as some other genres!
    Sophoclean Rhythm
Where does The Trachinian Tragedy: Women of Trachis rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Have not heard many dramas from Audible
What did you like best about this story?
The speeches by Herakles when he is struggling for his life. The translation is ennobling here, of Miltonic impetus.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The description how Lichas was killed or when Deianeira realizes her mistake.
    Any additional comments?
This is an excerpt from a book about Sophoclean language, that it is not artless or unstylized or unpoetically easy, as transpositions are the rule in him:
It would be absurd to represent Sophocles as an eccentric writer.
But he made subtle use of a material full of subtlety, which was
plastic to his touch, and the resulting lines are more difficult to trace
than those which have been impressed by some generally accepted
    mould.
