Terrific rendition of a beloved children's classic

What made the experience of listening to Eight Cousins the most enjoyable?

It is well performed, and it is a book so beautifully written with such appealing content, it stands up very well to being read aloud--which lesser books do not.

What did you like best about this story?

The ideas on health and healing, education, and women's role in society expressed by Dr. Alec Campbell are remarkably advanced. He would be very much at home in the company of holistic physicians of the modern world and is a perfect model of a "liberated," feminist male. He is extremely kind, generous, nurturing, and attentive to his sickly, heartbroken, 13-year-old, orphaned niece, Rose, the heroine of this novel.

For readers who enjoy stories rooted in family life, the Campbell clan offers a joyful vision of the many pleasures of being a treasured member of a close-knit, extended family.

Which character as performed by Barbara Caruso was your favorite?

There were three favorites: Rose, the 13-year-old heroine; Aunt Plenty, Rose's sixty-something great-aunt, and Pokey, a four-year-old little girl. Ms. Caruso is outstanding with female voices of all ages. However, she does not attempt to do male voices authentically, other than to very slightly deepen and roughen her voice to indicate adult males. To be fair, though, in my personal experience, few female narrators do male voices outstandingly, a notable exception being the late Anna Fields (AKA Kate Fleming).

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me both laugh and cry. Rose formed important one-on-one relationships with many different relatives and several friends, but the most significant and moving relationships were Rose and Uncle Alec, Rose and the 15-year-old family maid, Phoebe, and Rose and her 15-year-old cousin Mac. I loved the way Uncle Alec encouraged Rose's innate tendency to compassion, and she found frequent opportunities to express her generosity and kindness as she assisted and nurtured Phoebe and Mac.

Any additional comments?

It was a huge pleasure to re-experience this book, which I so dearly loved in my childhood and shared with my own children, as an audiobook performance. Hearing it narrated by an excellent voice talent greatly enhanced what was already a long-time love affair with this book.

Cute Story

While this was a cute story, that was well-performed, I don't know that I would recommend to anyone to run out and read it.

Accessible insights, reintroducing two foundational works of our culture

Professor Shutt draws upon decades of teaching experience to bring us back to where it all began, from the rage of Achilles to the bloody homecoming of Odysseus. Shutt deftly takes us through the action and principal themes of the works, but the key for me is that these little talks have enough depth that I was able to hear Shutt commenting on things I had forgotten about the works since I last read them more than 25 years ago. This whetted my interest and reignited my desire to reread the books themselves.

Just as some people have a face made for radio, Shutt has a voice made for writing. But his scratchy, squeaky tenor nevertheless manages a warm avuncular tone that made these genuinely enjoyable. I recommend these lectures, even though they might benefit from a web page referencing bibliographic notes such as comments on available translations.

Beautiful story hindered by reader

While not my favorite in the Anne series, this story is another full of endearing characters and stories. The narrator's voice isn't horrible, but she had trouble with randomly placing breaks in her speech (possibly when turning pages?), which was distracting. Also, the sound quality was horrendous. Wish I had asked to return it, but my daughter listened to the whole thing before me without complaint:)

Amazing!

I quiet enjoyed this wonderful book. The narrator did very good with the voices, and made me feel like I was there! I would recommend this app (And book)to my friends and family.

Couldn't Listen to It

I'm usually pretty patient but I only made it 40 seconds into this book before returning it for a refund. The sound quality was AWFUL. The narrator didn't seem terrible, but it sounded like it had been recorded in a tin can. I decided it was worth a little more money to get the version that Barbara Caruso narrates.

In the hands of Martial, the epigram was raised to a pitch of perfection that has never been equaled to this day.

The enduring literary interest of Martial's epigrams arises as much from their literary quality as from the colorful references to human life that they contain. Martial wrote over 1,500 of these gems, and this recording contains around 10 percent of the total. They are a very good cross-section of his work. My toilet mischief growing stale

I needed epigrams beyond the pale

Martial's book of verse would fit the bill

And transform my Sharpie into my quill

My one BIG issue with this book ...

Is the nine-tenths of Martial they forsook.

Ancient verse through a modern voice

On listening to these poems I felt I was back in ancient Rome. Charlton Griffin's rich voice is such a pleasure to listen to. Michlie's translations are so pithy and witty that you can easily forget that the poems were not originally written in English. I laughed at some of the lines that a Roman reader must have laughed at 19 centuries ago. Martial's grief over the death of the little slave girl is quite poignant. From a historical point of view, we get an idea of how demoralising and damaging the Roman patronage system could be. The reader will find himself or herself disgusted at some of Martial's attitudes, such as when he writes of forcing a young slave boy. But Audible have put the naughtier poems at the end of the recording, with an advance warning. And besides, for those of us interested in history, this unfortunately is also part of the historical record. A fascinating read.

Il grande filosofo, il cui fascino è rimasto inalterato nei secoli, dimostra il suo pensiero individuando sempre lesatto punto di equilibrio tra gli opposti: tra ragione e religione, vita reale e stoicismo, gioia di vivere e accettazione della morte, indicando la sola via possibile per raggiugere la tranquillità fisica e dellanimo, anche con esempi e con un linguaggio di facile comprensione.

ON MY BUCKET LIST TO READ.

I DID NOT READ THIS BOOK IN SCHOOL AND ALWAYS WANTED TO READ IT.I LOST MOST OF MY VISION TO MACULAR DEGENERATION AND ENJOYED THE AUDIBLE VERSION.

Very poor transcription

This transcript of the Iliad was clearly not proof read. The line breaks were ignored, so each paragraph breaks randomly, and even the line numbers, which should be at the end of the lines that they indicate, are included within the body of the text, often in mid-line. It's as if this was transcribed by an optical character recognition program without any human oversight. The Project Gutenburg version has much better formatting.

Never get tired of reading it

Anyone who loves literature should have this permanently in their library or on their tablet. I always like the Iliad over the Odyssey.

Odisseo, noto anche come Ulisse, quando giunse alla corte dei Feaci, raccontò tra le altre vicende che gli erano accadute, del suo incontro con la Maga Circe. Con laiuto del dio Ermes, Ulisse convinse Circe a liberare i compagni trasformati da lei in maiali, e ridare loro sembianze umane. Fu proprio da questo famosissimo episodio dellOdissea, che Plutarco prese lispirazione per scrivere questopera, sicuramente tra le più originali della sua produzione. Plutarco fa iniziare la vicenda con un dialogo tra Ulisse e la maga. Lui le chiede di liberare dallincantesimo anche tutti gli altri prigionieri Greci che lei ha tramutato in animali, e che, come tali, vivono nellisola. Circe allora gli concede un colloquio con Grillo, un maiale che un tempo era un uomo, ma le risposte che costui darà a Ulisse, non sono certo quelle che il navigatore Greco si sarebbe aspettato

GLI ANIMALI PIU' INTELLIGENTI DEGLI UOMINI?

Plutarco di Cheronea (48? - 120 dc), filosofo e biografo Greco, scrisse tre opuscoli dedicati al mondo e alla psicologia animale. Questi sono: L'Intelligenza degli animali" (titolo originale, Bruta animalia ratione uti, o Gli animali bruti usano la ragione), "Del mangiare carne", e "Sull'accortezza degli animali"

Nel presente libretto - di dimensioni 10x16 cm,60 pagine circa di lunghezza - l'argomento e' presentato nella forma di dialogo svolto sulla isola di Eea tra Odisseo e un individuo chiamato Grillo (trasformato in maiale dalla maga Circe). Scopo del dialogo e' di scoprire se Grillo ha intenzione di assumere le sembianze umane originali o rimanere maiale.

Plutarco considera la possibilita' che Grillo preferisca la seconda alternativa.

Durante il dialogo - e attraverso i due personaggi - Plutarco sostiene che gli animali non solo sono intelligenti, ma usano l'intelligenza in una maniera piu' efficace di quella degli uomini. In molti rispetti - lui suggerisce - gli animali sono superiori agli uomini, perche' vivono osservando leggi naturali, mentre, gli uomini spesso non lo fanno.

Considerando che gli animali soltanto uccidono per sopravvivere, mentre gli uomini (almeno alcuni uomini): (1) uccidono per odio - non sempre giustificato; (2) sono capaci di massacrare grandi numeri di persone innocenti - che a volte non conoscono neanche - per la semplice soddisfazione di vederle morire; (3) uccidono durante guerre che non sono necessarie; (4) vanno in massa ad osservare il condannato al patibolo, ma mostrano poco interesse in un individuo perdonato perche' innocente; (5) usano la tortura - spesso intensa - prima di uccidere; (6) usano sadismo (fisico e mentale), come stimolo sessuale; ci si chiede se Plutarco forse non aveva ragione.

Un libro piccolo con grandi concetti filosofici. Un libro che vale la pena leggere.
