Often considered as mere political propaganda in the conflict between Athens and Sparta, Andromache showcases Euripides' skill in a vivid and tender portrayal of a powerful woman brought low by fate.

About the author: Euripides was the youngest of the three great dramatists of classical Greece, with Sophocles and Aeschylus being his elders. Born around 484 BC, he authored some 92 plays, of which 19 have survived the ravages of time. Ever the iconoclast, Euripides portrayed the gods as capricious agents of fate, unconcerned towards men or righteousness. Mortals, however, were portrayed with all their innate characteristics, from tenderness to treachery, and on a human scale that set him apart from the heroic and larger than life characters of his contemporaries. This concern for the ordinary man would hold his plays in good stead during the Hellenistic period and even today makes Euripides one of the most accessible playwrights of the ancient world.

About this production: This production of Andromache was recorded at Mirror Sound Studios in Seattle and Voice Trax West studio in Los Angeles in 2012-13, and features some of the best new talent in theater in the Northwest including Sonya Joseph in the title role, Andrew McGinn as Menelaus, Gene Openshaw as Peleus, and Amy Escobar as Hermione. Unlike conventional recordings that use simple left-right panning to create localization of the sound channels, this recording uses synthetic binaural imaging technology to create a surprisingly lifelike sound image of the performance when played using headphones, while still retaining a pleasing stereo image when played through speakers.

Everything except the Goddess' voice is superb.

This was a stellar production of an old classic. I teach ancient history, and use this copy to brush up on my memory while I'm driving around since I have so little time to hold paper books. The first 90% was excellently performed, very entertaining. My one gripe is the digital tuning they used at the end during Thetis' speech. This speech is a keystone to the entire play, and yet it was nearly incomprehensible because the sound engineers went far overboard with the echoing. I understand that they meant to portray her as different and godlike, but after listening twice I had to refer to the print version online to get the text of that part of the dialogue. The rest of the play gets a 5 star review, I knock off one star because the climax is so poorly handled.

Amateurish readings

I was very disappointed in the quality of the voice acting. It sounded like high-schoolers, trying to emote. Perhaps it was the bland accents and lack of appropriate emphases.

A good read

Written primarily for scholars and students, Ancient Epic is nonetheless

a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read for those who know little

about the old human stories that undergird our Western literature and

culture. The introduction provided a beautiful overview of how these six

epics related to each other and how they can have high meaning for us

today. King has a way of describing the people and events that makes them

identifiable and memorable. I was surprised to find myself reading the book as I read a mystery--turning pages to find out what happened next. A good read!

Abridged version (weak sauce)

Should have been marked clearer that this is an abridged version. Even as an abridged version, this is way too watered down. The voice actors are good, and the sound effects are on point. It reads like an ancient Greek telenovela, which is awesome, but the story loses a lot of its significance with so many parts that are cut.

Lovely book, but it is nothing like Little Women. It was written for children and their enjoyment. It is mostly about how children play, get into trouble and quickly find their way out it. The 12 year old Daisy is read like she is a 2 year old and that annoyed me a bit. I got about 6 hours into it and quit.

Best book in a long time for me

For me I liked it highly and recommend this to anyone the right age and a person who have a little imagination

Barbara Caruso's warm, maternal voice brings this narrative of post-Civil War era America to life, telling the adventures and mishaps of the boys at Plumfield when Jo March is all grown up and managing a family of her own.

A Childhood Favourite

I love the whole March story and we listened right through from Little Women, but I thought this reader missed the mark a little, she isn't good at different voices so it was difficult at times to know which character was speaking, and at times I felt she had the emphasis in the wrong place, and some words seemed to be pronounced a little oddly. This said, we did listen to the whole book and still enjoyed it.

Didactic but Enjoyable

In this highly didactic sequel to Little Men, we follow the late teen/early adult years of the students of Plumfield. The stories are interesting, though dated, and Alcott infuses the novel with life and laughter.

Ms. Caruso did a nice job narrating, though some of her male voices were quite similar.

A Timeless Story

Where does Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This particular audiobook holds a special place in my heart. Barbara Caruso did a wonderful job as narrator. It was my first experience of this classic book and wowed me from start to finish. I can't rank it numerically because it seems all my favorite audiobooks are my absolute favorite - until I think of the next favorite. But this one is truly one of the special books I think everyone would love, if they have a heart at all.

What other book might you compare Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm to and why?

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm reminded me somewhat of Pollyanna - young girl leaving family or orphaned finding a home with crotchety aunt and softening the old maid's heart while growing into a caring, warm hearted young woman.

Rebecca - of course!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I think this is a book best listened to in segments. It is a story of a young girl over time, and to listen all in one sitting would for me, be too compressing of the impression of Rebecca as she grows from child to (young) adult woman.
