Title: A Master of Mysteries

Author: L. T. Meade

Narrator: Victoria Bradley

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 18 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-24-17

Publisher: Audioliterature

Genres: Classics, World Literature

Publisher's Summary:

"A Master of Mysteries" (1898) is a collection of connected short stories by L. T. Meade and Robert Eustace. Excerpt: "From my earliest youth the weird, the mysterious had an irresistible fascination for me. Having private means, I resolved to follow my unique inclinations, and I am now well known to all my friends as a professional exposer of ghosts, and one who can clear away the mysteries of most haunted houses.

Up to the present I have never had cause to regret my choice, but at the same time I cannot too strongly advise any one who thinks of following my example to hesitate before engaging himself in tasks that entail time, expense, thankless labour, often ridicule, and not seldom great personal danger. (...) I propose in these pages to relate the histories of certain queer events, enveloped at first in mystery, and apparently dark with portent, but, nevertheless, when grappled with in the true spirit of science, capable of explanation."

Members Reviews:

A true classic.

You might know the jungle book by the Disney version, but have you ever wondered were that story came from? Well Rudy Kipling's tail is were the story begins. The book is not the disney version, I repeat it is NOT the disney version. This book is a collection of stories written by Rudy taking place in india. I very much enjoy this collection and also own the hard copy in addition to the kindle version. As soon as I downloaded this list night I couldn't help but dive in and re read a classic. So if you like short stories, grab your cat, dog, or teddy bear ( what ever is the most snugly ) and curl up for a entertaining read.

Fine Story and Active Table of Contents...

Also has an interesting short biography of the author at the close together with about a dozen photos of the man which was a definite plus. Very good book!

A book of delightful short stories and poem-song

'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling is a book of delightful short stories and poem-songs about talking animals. Five of the stories follow Mowgli, who as a human toddler was separated from his parents after Shere Khan, the tiger, tried to attack the family in the jungles of India. Instead of ending up as a meal for Shere Khan, Mowgli is raised eventually by two wolves who see him as one of their cubs. But first, a meeting was called and the ethics of adopting a manchild were debated by the pack. The matter is settled when Baloo, the bear, agrees to accept Mowgli as a student to teach him the Law of the Jungle; and Bagheera, the black panther, agrees to take the pack to a newly killed bull in exchange for Mowgli's acceptance into the pack. The wolf pack take the deal, but Shere Khan becomes Mowgli's mortal enemy.

Mowgli has a number of adventures which are not all entirely pleasant, but I have this strong feeling it was on the whole fun to be a feral child!

Other talking animal stories are included which showcase a variety of wild and domesticated animals who find Mankind and Nature directs them towards certain choices and troubles. Their personalities and inclinations direct their fates somewhat, but, gentle reader, I found them all to be wonderful creatures. However, I admit to favoring Rikki Tikki Tavi, the mongoose, most of all!

Mature children will adore this book, especially if they are able to get an edition with illustrations, but if you are familiar with the Disney movie version only, I must emphasize the unabridged book version has animal deaths, by hunting.

Classic tale with some unusual chapters

This is my first time to read this classic story and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The first few chapters do remind you of the Disney movie and I thought it had a fun appeal for kids and adults alike. However, when we read the chapter "White Seal", I was confused. It seemed odd to jump from the jungle with Mowgli to a story about Kotick, the white seal.

Title: The Death of Ivan Ilyitch

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Narrator: Mary Baker

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 31 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-07-17

Publisher: Audioliterature

Genres: Classics, World Literature

Publisher's Summary:

One of the world's masterpieces on the subject of death. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his dying much of a thought. But one day, death comes to him in the shape of sudden illness, and to his shocked agony and surprise, he is now forced to deal with his own mortality.

This story by Tolstoy plunges us into the darkness of death but also raises us up into the light of life and spiritual transcendence: "He sought his former accustomed fear of death and did not find it. 'Where is it? What death?' There was no fear because there was no death. In place of death there was light." This work, along with the "Anna Karenina", is an enduring testament to the genius of Tolstoy and an essential jewel in the vast crown of classic Russian literary masterpieces!

Titolo: Umiliati e offesi

Autore: Fëdor Dostoevskij

Narratore: Silvia Cecchini

Formato: Unabridged

Durata: 12 hrs and 45 mins

Lingua: Italiano

Data di pubblicazione: 05-30-17

Editore: Collina d'oro

Categoria: Classics, World Literature

Riepilogo Editore:
